The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide, OYC, has described the recent honour on acclaimed winner of June 12 election, late M.K.O Abiola as a step towards appeasing the Yoruba.

DAILY POST recalls that Buhari had conferred on the late Abiola a posthumous award and replaced the May 29 with June 12 as Democracy Day.

Reacting through a statement signed by Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the President Ohanaeze Youth Council Worldwide and Comrade Obinna Achuonye, the Deputy

President, they urged Buhari to also find ways of assuaging the feelings of people of the South-East.

The group said in the statement that it has appraised the recent development “especially as its regards to the conferment of GCFC on the Late MKO Abiola and declaration of June 12 as Public holiday. It is a welcome development to appease the Yoruba of South west.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide is telling President Buhari to extend such gesture to Ndigbo, by sponsoring an Executive Bill to the National Assembly, for an additional state to the People of Southeast as a way to correct the structural imbalance of Southeast having only 5 states.

“Such Executive bill will help to solve some structural issues with regards to making Ndigbo to be at per with other geo-political zones. President Buhari will win the hearts of Igbos if there’s an additional state in the Southeast.”

“OYC insists that President Buhari having honoured M.K.O Abiola and co, should extend that gesture to the man who conducted the 1993 Presidential election, Professor Humphrey Nwosu.

“We know that President buhari must have forgotten Professor Humphrey Nwosu in the list of those he recently honoured. For Nwosu to have fearlessly conducted such an election adjudged as the freest and fairest election in Nigeria, he should be next in the list after Abiola.

“We call on the Federal Government to consider the immediate upgrading of Akanu Ibiam Airport Enugu and acceleration of work in the second Niger bridge,” they further stated.

These people are funny, you want additional states to equal others. How much is the whole southeast. If you want additional states, that mean state like oyo that is almost equal the whole east will need to be divided into 5 to states as well, while ondo should get 3 and ogun gets 4.

Much as the request to assuage illfeelings felt by the igbos may be valid but the request for an extra state is quite stupid.

The South East is barely the size of Borno State. Should such bigger states in size and population make similar requests?

State creations and entitlements are not done based on land mass but population. That is why Lagos state which is the smallest state in Nigeria by land mass has the highest number of reps (21) in the lower chamber ie: house of reps more than Niger state that is bigger than the whole SW and SE put together.
A lot of African countries are bigger than Nigeria in land mass but not productive and populated like Nigeria.

Land mass is useless. An big head is a burden to the shoulder if nothing is there.

The request for more states is purely sentimental and does not right any wrong as it doesn't exist.


There is no land mass or population to merit such demand.

If it is by population, Lagos and Kano should be 5 states.
If it is by land mass, Borno, Niger, Oyo, Kogi, Benue, Taraba, Kaduna and many more equal or exceedingly surpass the whole of the SouthEast that already looks like a thumbnail.

The only objective consideration is to totally cut out the Anioma section of Delta state and have it as the smallest state and new member state of the SouthEast. Same should be done to Southern Kaduna and included as part of MiddleBelt, just as Taraba has no business being part of the NorthEast and should belong with the MiddleBelt. All the Yoruba sections of Kwara including Ilorin, and the Yoruba sections of Kogi should also be cut out to form a new state that is part of SouthWest.


The map of Nigeria does not lie, as it is scaled equally to the reality of the landmass ratio.

If the Igbos want an additional state, they need to first build a southern consensus before the bill gets to the national assembly. The Yoruba's want a special status for Lagos state and most southern states want to create more local government to correct the current imbalance in local government spread. It should be a give and take consensus. You rub my back I rub your back kind of arrangement. If not, it will fail just like the Lagos special status bill and the south eastern development commission bill.
