oyetpel, beorn et al,

Since we have had the debate on gay kissing scenes getting more appearances in Hollywood movies/series, I want to talk about something that is getting too much in Hollywood!

Forced "genderswapping" in the name of "feminism"

Just as there is a push for gay characters in Hollywood, there is a push for female characters as well. I have no problem with that I am a liberal and a feminist.

However, when lazy film-making and script-writing are covered up with "feminism" it becomes annoying and detrimental to feminism itself.

An example of this is ghostbusters 2016!
Ghostbusters 2016 was a remake that failed. The directors changed the original all-male cast to all-female. This move annoyed fans because they have been begging for a sequel since the early 90s (over 2 decades). The directors and the cast went on to abuse fans and call them misogynistic douchebags because they didn't like the trailers and the genderswapping.

Of course, the movie went on to fail. How did they expect the movie to sell when they had finished insulting their very own fanbase? Furthermore, the movie was horrible. The plot and the jokes were barely average. It seemed like an extended SNL joke (note that SNL is rarely funny these days).

My opinion is that women directors and hollywood should come up with original stories/movies for and with women. I love bridesmaids as an all-female movie. It was original and funny. Taking a good story and just changing the gender to femaile is just plain lazy. And if they really want to genderswap, they should really invest in a good plot so that the changing of genders can be justified.

This brings me to the new movie called Oceans 8. An all-female version of the all-male version of Oceans 11. Occeans 8, not surprisingly, is getting mixed reviews calling the movie "average".

One fact I noticed about DC is that their comics & animations are so on point plot wise. But when it comes to their movies, the reverse is the case. Their superhero characters & their ability are usually poorly written & represented. Let's just consider this few DC superhero's for instance

Batman : I consider this character DC's number one, but up till now his character hasn't been developed to fly( pls don't argue with me that he does fly, cause all he does is that he uses his cape to glide from one point to another). Don't get me wrong, am not saying he should be bitten by a radioactive bat to acquire this feature. The dude is a billionaire from crying out loud, what stops him from acquiring a flying suit of armour just like marvels iron man did. At least, such suit of power will give him a fighting chance amongst the justice league team, cause as it stands now, he's the weakest of the team.

Flash: My favorite superhero of the DC world. Those who have read the comics and are following The flash tv series, will agree with me that he has the worst plot hole of all DC's superhero characters. For crying out loud, how is it possible that even the green arrow was able to hit the fastest man alive with a mere arrow as he was in motion( this is somebody who when he runs, he's so fast that to him, everybody stands still). The latest season we see flash being framed for a murder he didn't commit & is caught red handed at the crime scene, when he could have easily vibrated and phased the corpse and all the evidence.

Harley Quinn: koice dealt with this one extensively so, I've got nothing to add.

Superman: The legendary man of steel, the presumed alpha & omega of the DC world, and yet he got his ass handed to him & almost got killed by batman in Batman vs Superman. Abeg to me the kryptonite weakness bullshit is becoming very annoying. At the slightest sight of kryptonite, the dude melts and becomes as soft as a weakling. So are the trying to say he's never gonna subdue this weakness of hishuh
That’s why’s most people stick with marvel these days, I watched cat woman and heck that movies was lipsrsealed.

I still feel the ending of avengers infinity war was trash sha

Superhumanist, I didn't even notice this gender-swapping trend till you mentioned it this morning. Maybe it's the fact that I was oblivious of the fact that 2016 Ghostbusters was a remake of the all-male cast of the first Ghostbusters.

I really don't think gender-swapping trend is becoming that rampant, maybe I'll need more examples before I can conclude so. I think what we saw in the latest Ocean's 8 and 2016 Ghostbusters, was just directors/producers trying to come up with new ideas to add a bit of spice to those movies. Like, they wanted to try out new ideas instead of refurbishing an already worn-out storyline. Like you already pointed out, it wasn't a great success not because of the gender-swapping/all-female cast, but because of the poor script/storyline.

2016 Ghostbusters was poorly directed. Their jokes were very dry. It had surprisingly high rating, but the Ghostbusters that I watched was average. Only Melissa McCarthy was able to salvage what was left of the reputation of the film. Even if it wasn't a gender-swapped movie, it'd have still sucked with that storyline. All-female cast films (not necessarily gender-swapped ones) can be a box office success with good reviews with the right right actresses and good storylines. E.g: Charlie's Angels and Girls Trip.

Also, most all-female cast movies are rarely big hits like their all-male counterparts, that's an angle you should also consider. Heck, even movies with a female as the lead/major character - especially action or superhero movies - are rarely successful save for few like Wonder Woman and Kill Bill vol 1 & 2. Movies like Tomb Raider (both versions), Cat Woman, Aeon Flux were all major flops at the box office.

I generally agree with you.

My hope is that the directors or producers should not rely on girl power or feminism to sell movies. Strong female characters should be well written with good plots.

I know that there aren't much genderswappinv examples but I feel we will see more of it.

The stroy behind female Thor is that the original Thor became unworthy of his hammer (mojlnr) and an unknown female took over the hammer and the name "Thor".

Given that Thor is not his superhero nickname but his real name, it is quite silly.

And no, there was never a time in the past that Thor was a woman. This is a recent storyline.

When Batman starts flying like Iron Man, it'll elicit mocking criticisms with people saying DC are now copying MC because they are desperate to be successful as MC. Iron Man was flying right from the comic books, so it's an integral part of him. Batman on the other hand doesn't fly and making him fly will look absurd. Getting a suit to make him more strong and fast like Black Panther wouldn't be bad, but to fly? That's too away from the norm.

Superman: The legendary man of steel, the presumed alpha & omega of the DC world, and yet he got his ass handed to him & almost got killed by batman in Batman vs Superman. Every superhero has/should have a limit. We're talking about a man that could stop a bullet with his eye. How do you expect Superman movies to make sense when he's practically untouchable? I for one am of the opinion that one of the reasons why Justice League was average was because Superman beat the villain like a kid. It was annoying and preposterous. He just arrived onto the scene and beat the villain like a child. He couldn't even put up an effort at all like he did with the rest of the JL. We saw more fight sequences before Superman arrived, immediately he arrived, the show immediately ended.

That's an advantage Avengers have over them along with superior storyline. A strong Villain like Thanos can give them a run for their money. You get to witness extended fight plots as the villains are not walkovers.

LMAO!! The story alone makes for pure unadulterated comedy. I think MC are about to lose it. I get that they're trying to be creative, but this was unnecessary IMHO. It's better they take a break and come up with a better idea than this absurd idea.

A flying Batman, seriouslyhuh
Batman is a billonaire, he can build a flying suit like Iron Man but if he did that....people would complain that DC is copying Marvel.
Batman can operate with Batmobile, Batcycle, the stylish aircraft (batjet) and the mech suit he used against superman.

Most of his bigger weapons and artilery are used against bigger threats.

On a normal day Batman would employ Batarang and hand to hand combat.

Btw, no one is advocating for a flying Batman aka Iron Man 2.0 except you!
The majority of comic book fans are satisfied with Batman.
DC fans will puke if Batman swapped his batarang for an AK 47, not to mention a flying Batman huh .If this is a joke pls stop it.

In Marvel, you have Black Panther...a billonaire who operates with a vibranuim suit.
T'challa can add thrusters to his suit so he can fly like Iron Man.
But he didn't and never will.
With all the billions he has, he runs on the ground like every other human.
Black Panther does not fire missles and explosives like Iron Man.

Iron Man used vibranuim tech to make a better suit (watch Infinity War) but T'challa with all the technological advancement in Wakanda, is still using hand to hand combat.

And Marvel fans are not complaining.

So why do you think we need a flying Batmanhuh

When you talk about power levels and ability, Batman may look weak to you.
But Batman remains the most brilliant guy in Justice League if not the entire DC universe.
He's a master tactician.
Batman is the leader of Justice League (even in the comics), yeah so much for a guy you deemed WEAK huh
Heroes like Superman and a 100 year old Wonder Woman takes orders from Batman.

Batman singlehandedly put the League in trouble after he secretly profiled all their weaknesses.

Without Batman a powerful team like JL is not complete.

The problem is that you keep downgrading Batman cuz he got no powers. He's just a traditional crime fighter.
Therefore he is WEAK to you.

You might as well call Lex Luthor a WEAKLING.
People like Batman and Lex are ordinary mortals.
But because of their intelligence and brilliance.
They are considered powerful and dangerous.

Batman is one of the best things in DC.

The idea of Thor being a woman and still retaining the name is comical. If they wanted to steer the storyline to that angle, I have no problem with it, but it's only ethical to give the female Thor her own name, or maybe make it a spin-off with a separate name. Just like they have Superwoman and Supergirl different from Superman but from same planet. It's just common sense. Norms are subject to change, that's why I said I welcomed the idea of Ocean's 8 being an all-female cast, something refreshing but yet distinct.

Can sango be a woman?

Is it because people don't worship Norse mythology anymore?

Captain marvel was actually a man before before it was passed on to a woman. It was done with a better storyline.

- 50 shades of Grey: In my defence, it wasn't my idea, I went with a friend. Never again.
50 shades of rubbish. The female lead is a terrible actress.

After Earth: Wasn't my idea.
I wonder why critics panned this movie. I actually enjoyed it. cheesy

The idea of Thor being a woman and still retaining the name is comical.
Why?? Thor is non-binary name, just like Green Lantern, Deadpool, Cyborg and Daredevil. There is nothing comical in a woman adopting these roles. It's sexist to think otherwise.

Beorn:
If they wanted to steer the storyline to that angle, I have no problem with it, but it's only ethical to give the female Thor her own name, or maybe make it a spin-off with a separate name. Just like they have Superwoman and Supergirl different from Superman but from same planet. It's just common sense.
There is nothing sensible in your postulations. Here's why:
- Thor is inspired by the Nordic god of thunder, thus that name is set in stone.
- There can only be one mojlnr, thus creating a female Thor with her own name (Thoress?) in the same universe as an active Male Thor would invariably create a lot of conflict of interest and series of paradox. A situation wereby we will have two mojlnr existing in the same universe is sacrilegious to say the least. Now, that's unethical.
- There can only be one Thor at a time.
- Thor already has a family in Asgard and don't need another.
- Superman is cousin to Supergirl and both belong to the house of El from the planet of Krypton. Thus, Supergirl is not a spinoff. It has always been that way.

Beorn:
Norms are subject to change, that's why I said I welcomed the idea of Ocean's 8 being an all-female cast, something refreshing but yet distinct.
And yet you have a problem with Thor becoming a woman? Do you not honestly realize just how contradictory you sound right now?

This is news. I had no idea 300 had a second installment.
Oh yes, there's a part 2. Very forgettable tho.

He played an Igbo guy? Seriously?? How come in wasn't news?
It was! You just weren't paying attention. Part of the huge draw is the fact that The Rock played "Okoye", a Nigerian.

Indeed.

Can sango be a woman?

Is it because people don't worship Norse mythology anymore?

Captain marvel was actually a man before before it was passed on to a woman. It was done with a better storyline.
Just contradicted yourself in 2 sentences.

To answer your question, yes, if it's a comic character. It's basic, really.

How's Thor a
non-binary name. Thor is described as the GOD of Thunder, not GODDESS of Thunder in the Norse mythology. He is the husband of the golden-haired goddess Sif , is the lover of the jötunn Járnsaxa , and is generally described as fierce eyed, red haired and red bearded man. It's not a gender neutral name. The name has only been associated with male deity, so saying a female can rise up and bear the same name is absurd. It's a name for a god not goddess, so I don't get how it's non-binary. Have you ever read a Norse mythology that lends credence to your postulations?

You're tying yourself in a tortuous knot of warped logic. Getting hold of mojlnr doesn't immediately make your name Thor. How could you even think this way? It's appalling. I least expected someone like you to think this way. Odin the father of Thor once had the Mojlnr before Thor took over? When Odin was in possession of it was his name, Thor? LMAO. grin grin So Odin was bearing Thor initially and chose the name Odin after Thor took over? When folktales had it that he gave birth to Thor and named him Thor from birth. Do you now see the folly in your assertions?

OK, in Thor Ragnarok, after Thor's sister destroyed Mojlnr, did Thor's name change? It'd have changed since the hammer had been destroyed. Thor's name should have changed temporarily when his father banished him to earth and stripped him of his godly powers. Thor is Thor's name from birth. He's not named Thor because he's in possession of the Mojlnr. You are even contradicting yourself. You agreed they can only be one Thor, so if this lady takes the Mojlnr, Thor will now start bearing Chibuike, abi? huh

And yet you have a problem with Thor becoming a woman? Do you not honestly realize just how contradictory you sound right now?
Calm down and get my point. You're in a hurry to prove me wrong that you're missing the salient point. I'm all for a new concept, a new plot, even a woman being a Thor while Thor looses possession of the Mojlnr temporarily, but the woman should not be answering Thor. It's foolishnes of the highest echelon. With or without the Mojlnr, Thor remains Thor as already proven in Thor Ragnarok. It's his name.

These white folks are taking this whole gender representation thing to ridiculous levels. I grew up reading about Thor in classical mythology and I just can't wrap my head around the idea of a female Thor. It's almost sacrileageous
It makes no sense. Instead of preserving the culture that everyone knows, all in the name of gender representation (I'm guessing it may be why), they want to distort a solid origin. If they want a female-esque Thor, they have to change her name and come up with her own story.
