I was in the pub this evening discussing with some folks and the gist later gravitated to traditional rulers and hierarchical order. Some said the emir is higher than the sultan while I held the opposite opinion.
Please those who are familiar with this issue should kindly help to explain.

In the Nigerian context, an emir is the ruler of town just like you have the oba in the west. He is normally supported by village heads.
While the sultan is the spiritual head of a region which includes the domain of several or most emirs. Just like the ooni of Ife. How much influence the sultan has over the emirs in the modern day 9ja is what I can't say.
To answer your question, he is senior to all the emirs.

Well, to answer this question we need to go back to history of Uthman Dan fodio, while he was spreading his jihad he choose his relative to serve as Emir, but his own descendant claimed the throne of Sultan, thereby signifying that Sultan is greater than the Emir.
