troubleseller: Ishilove:Theoretically, The Quiet Place is okay-ish I guess, but conceptually, it's comes off as very outlandish. If I'm deaf, maybe I'd be more sympathetic, but I'm not, so I can't relate and tbh, I can't help but feel that the movie is very unapologetically pretentious. It tries to appeal to our emotions/sentiments, but instead only became just another content in the overflogged deafness troupe. This is a topic I've seen multiple times already. Maybe I've become desensitized to the whole deaf/silence/sign language schtick: The Shape of Water, Don't Breath, Baby Driver, The Silent Child. |

hazel01:Well, I don't know what more you were expecting from a Von Triers movie, and one with such a depressing name at that. It's a bold flick that explores the significance/insignificance of our existence - bleakness is a given. |

hazel01:You're right. Same thing my female neighbour said. |

KoiceReloaded:Conceptually, sci-fi and horror movies are generally outlandish. And I don't think it tries to appeal to emotions. All form of art is made to (at least) evoke and not appeal to emotion (that is the job of hunger strikes). To me it's just a horror movie where the villains have a trigger like most horror movies. And of course concepts have to be repeated though not wholistically if not everything becomes stale. P.S: Baby was not deaf. He was always listening to something so he could drown out the constant ringing in his ears probably caused by his cochlea taking a hit when the accident happened. |

troubleseller:Bravo, well stated. However, when you said all forms of art evoke in us emotions and not appeal, you're practically saying cheese doesn't come from milk. To evoke (invoke) is to bring about, to cause, thus, evoke is the antecedent of appeal. Now to expand: Art brings about emotion in us, by appealing to and eliciting our emotions. You see, there is no way something can conjure up emotion and not appeal simultaneously. The two works together, they are intertwined. Lemme elaborate further. A sculpture of a malnourished child is meant to solicit (appeal to) the emotions of potential donors just like it is crafted to conjure (elicit) their emotions. When folks feel sympathetic to the plight of malnourished children, they are more likely to open up their wallet, right? But they can't feel sympathetic if there is no visual cue. Therefore, the visual cue (appeal) to their emotion, which in turn (elicit) sympathy in them. The Quiet Place tried to solicit/elicit the audience feeling by the clever use of silence and the sign language shrouded in bleak patina, but inadvertently end up portraying deafness as tragic. It kind of f**kup in that sense because in doing so, it became just another troupe of disability yoked to technology. At least Baby Driver put a positive spin to the troupe by using music to drown out the tinnitus suffered by the titular character. I never said he was, but he has a hearing disability called tinnitus, and used music to drown it out. His guardian was deaf and they use sign language to communicate. And don't forget the ending when he may/may not have lost his hearing completely. |

I agree with your analysis of appeal. You're right but still I just feel the movie wasn't really anchored to the deafness it portrayed (remember just one of characters was deaf (both in the movie and in real life) ) and for me, the reasons why I like the movie are: Emily Blunt's perfomance, the usage of deafness in horror (I've not watched Don't Breathe. That will be next) and the scientific accuracy of the movie (especially the grown girl and the cochlear implant given to her). Hope say I never spoil the movie for those wey never watch am sha |

troubleseller:I really liked Don't Breath. It's bleak but it has relatable characters, and most importantly, it has closure. |

Jumanji(1995).. 8.5/10 Genre: Fantasy For good 104min , I was in a state of anxiety, thrilled, and entertained. The suspense in the movie tends to build as the story developed. Content wise, this movie was written to perfection, How I wish Jumanji: welcome to the jungle stuck to at least 80% of the original source material of this movie, it would have been perfect. Small solders..7/10 Genre:SciFi/ Fantasy/Comedy Steven Spielberg never fails to disappoint. Seeing the movie now, I can't help but reminisce about the good old days when I used to see this movie on channels TV most Sundays. |

mekaprime:Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is a watered down version of the original. They tried to add comedy to it to make more it interesting, but compared to the first version, it couldn't hold a candle to it. I knew what I was to expect when I saw Kevin Hart and Jack Black, so I wasn't really disappointed but I expected a bit more nonetheless. |

I have watched Acrimony and i liked it. Though like most people said here, it seems Nollywood ish, but there were lessons there. Will surely make my lil sis watch it. I am curious about a court scene where the judge had already declared his verdict but Robert's lawyer present another case file to the judge about Melinda's threats and the judge dealt with it immediately, is that possible? I thought it was another court case on its own. |
