Colombia’s Yerry Mina scored a game-winning goal in the 75th minute to put Colombia at the top of Group H, and the 1-0 result created a rare tiebreaker scenario that resulted in Senegal’s elimination from the World Cup based on their yellow card total.
Despite James Rodriguez’s injury – he left Thursday’s game in the 31st minute – Colombia vaulted to the top of Group H with six points.

Poland’s 1-0 win over Japan meant that Japan and Senegal finished the group tied on points, goal difference, and goals scored. Since the head-to-head matchup finished 2-2, the tie was broken by FIFA Fair Play points, which measure a team’s discipline over the three group-stage games. Japan had two fewer yellow cards than Senegal, so the African team was eliminated.

Here’s the list of secondary World Cup tiebreakers, after goal difference and goal total.
Via FIFA:
1. Greatest number of points obtained in the group matches between the teams concerned
2. goal difference resulting from the group matches between the teams concerned
4. greater number of goals scored in all group matches between the teams concerned
5. greater number of points obtained in the fair play conduct of the teams based on yellow and red cards received in all group matches (a team loses one point for a yellow card, three points for a player accumulating two yellows to earn a red card, four points for a straight red card, and five points for a yellow card and a straight red)
6. drawing of lots by the FIFA
It’s possible, then, that if England and Belgium draw on Thursday and the fair play points match up, we could see the winner of Group G determined by a random drawing

The fair play rule. Senegal have more yellow cards. Meaning that Japan were more of a decent and careful team. You get am?
