I can relate to this story Weller, when I did my nysc in one of the girls secondary schools in Anambra, the corps members were warned not to flog the girls, that we should report to d school authority should they do something wrong. After some few months I called no longer bear the inordinate attitude of these girls ooo, I will be writing on the board some of them will be engaged in discussion, while some laughing bearing in mind we were asked not to discipline them, until I went against d rule and started flogging them on their hands ooo, not their bom bom ooo.Normalcy was returned and they started paying attention. So what I am deriving at is when students know a teacher has no authority to discipline them they will start behaving inappropriate, so light punishment is not a bad idea.

We really need to stop Corporal Punishment in our school, the pupils are human and not animal.

You said all these without providing any other effective correction measures that can be used in schools to punish erring children.

Hmm, and with this, the children would start misbehaving when they come to the school, and when especially they see the teachers. If I was in the teachers shoes, I'll keep on beating them, and they'll keep on keeping me in prison... That's when those students would no "this teacher no they give up "...their father go tire.

Back when I was in secondary school, there is one boy like this, at the time he was in jss2. The boy is a homosexual, he tried to pay another boy to give him a hand job, then the boy reported him. After that they called the other boy (the homosexual) out at the assembly, they made him lie down and they flogged him mercilessly in front of everybody, they gave him about 15 strokes of cane.They also gave him 2 weeks suspension. Serves him right, the disgusting fat fool.

Seeing those teachers coming to the class with bunch of canes like masquerade divert your attention from the subject of the day, I believe there are other ways to correct your sutdents than beating them up like goat

Ur saying this because u have never been in class. Most of our public schools are filled up, in a class u have more than 70 kids......pls suggest one of the methods u can use to get these kids to do what is right

my then principal of those those days will flog ur child right in ur very before and u cant do shit. if u try to intervene, he will tell u two things are involved : either ur child goes home permanently with u or u allow him[the principal] to do his job

that is why these children don't regard their teachers anymore. more reason why we don't have reasonable children. them no flog you for school? did you experience the aforementioned? I'm a teacher and I can tell you that private schools have lost it when it comes to discipline. even government schools are way better than mist private schools these days.

I can never send my child to a school that will not discipline or flog my child when necessary.
Will I pay school fees only for academics and not for discipline?? A child that is brilliant academically but lacks manners & discipline will surely fail in life. Mind you...manners & discipline can only be effectively instilled in a child from 0-12 years, after that, you're just wasting time because the child's character has already been formed.
My daughter, a 3 year old, attends a University Staff School. I have seen the teachers use the cane from time to time, when a child refuses to do homework continuously, when the child messes up his/her body continuously without informing the teacher, as they have been taught, making noise without a break, etc.
The children may be young but there is no other time one can start discipline on children than now.
I was disciplined by both my parents and teachers growing up and it really moulded me into the success I am today, so I can't change that system when it comes to my children since I want them to succeed in life too.
Like they say, you don't change a winning team (or formula)!!

Most times kids prefer you cane them than talk to them. Some teachers cane because they are frustrated because of poverty they end up taking it out of the child like the last video.

Really? Very funny opinion. How many kids did you talk to or you just knew? Caning attains one thing, it impacts negatively on the children. Physical pains, psychological trauma, distraction from learning, fear etc.

Flogging is not an effective form of discipline, it is a physical abuse. You even said 0-12 years! Before I got married, my method of discipline any kid they wanted to be disciplined in the house by me was asking them to sit down in my living room, simple as that. Even a kid who was crying and proving stubborn hated it. Let them sit for 30 minutes to 1 hour on their own, you will see the magic.
Now, that I have my own children, my favourite form of discipline is to ask them to knee down and close their eyes, no raising up of hands because that also brings pain. It is effective enough for me. Can't say I've never beaten them, that would be a dishonest but I do try to remind myself that it is wrong.

I don't have with light flogging. But the excessiveness of our teachers and parents was enough for anyone who experienced it to stand against it.

Now, no more parent I've discipline at home while parents are carrying the same thing to schools preventing teachers to touch their children for any offence committed in the school at the end of the day the child end up being a cultist and not respecting elders in the society.

I recall, in our days a boy made a ruthless speech to a class senior girl and our class teacher said " In my class you rude to the senior girl I will give you six of the best" and he did and from that all students new how behave well both in and outside the school. And today how many children give respect to their parents and elders back home.

Cuz you were lucky not to have been beaten to death that doesn't mean alot of kids were luck like you. I know of a brother who became disable cuz he got beaten by one of these lunatic teachers in Nigeria. Say no to copral punishment in our schools. You asked what are the others ways? The teacher can easily ask the student to kneel down infront of the class for some hours, this is just one of the many ways. I believe you too know there are several ways you can correct these kids rather than beating them up like a goat

yeah.. but many people use it interchangeably. discipline sometimes might not even involve corporal punishments... but if we are to take that out of schools a time will come parents will sue teachers for correcting students. I once heard of a soldier who went to a school to 'discipline' the teachers that punished his daughter. what kind of person do you think such a child will grow up to be?

To every man his own...even the Bible talks about using the rod (Proverbs 13:24 -Whoever spares the rod hates their children, but the one who loves their children is careful to discipline them)....we can't be wiser than God himself!

well the answer is not far fetched.. just take a look at the western world and their hedonistic, materialistic and pluralistic approach to life, they have lost the sense of shame, reason and meaning.
