It is the first day in the Round of 16 and already the 2 most iconic players of this era are out of Russia 2018. To really be up there with the greats of the beautiful game, you have to win the World Cup.

Most of the top players from the last generation did — Zidane, Ronaldo de Lima, Ronaldinho, Rivaldo, Pirlo. The only reason many compare Maradona to Pele is because he almost single-handedly won the tournament for Argentina in Mexico ’86.

Now, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have blazed the trail in the last decade mesmerizing the world with their amazing talent.

However, Argentina’s 3-4 loss to France and Uruguay’s 2-1 defeat of Portugal mean that both of these great players are in real danger of not ever winning the Mundial.

Cristiano Ronaldo will be 37-years-old by the time the World Cup in Qatar holds in 2022 and Messi will be 35. Even if both players by some chance get to play in Qatar, they will be way past their best and it will take their national teams moving on to a new era for them to have any chance of being competitive in the next World Cup.

I think that sadly both Messi and Ronaldo are not going to be able to win the World Cup as players and might have to really on winning it as coaches. You never know though, if they manage to keep fit, they just might have a chance in Qatar- never say never.

If mayweather and klischko could box at 40 and still be victorious (or highly competitive in the case og klischko) against much younger opponents,, Why cant footballers do the same?

I usually play for 2 hours 30 minutes. From 4 to 6:30. Are you saying that boxing isnt as tough? George Foreman wanted to have another match at the age of 50. When did the undertaker retire? And when it comes to football Giggs remained useful even at the age of 40

The Panama captain at this World Cup is 37. Egypt's Hadary saved a Penalty at 45.

I suspect Messi might be back in Qatar as a bench player. Ronaldo might be too old.

Yeah but we all watched the likes of Ryan Giggs and Ian Goodison lose their agility and strength. Not forgetting the fact that these guys were in the midfield and defence respectively.
Being a Forward at such age is almost impossible, because you need not only be in form but also be as agile and strong as the guy you benched, else you get benched.

This is why forwards retire way faster than midfielders, defenders and goal keepers often time retire last.

By the way I read an article sometime ago, where Ronaldo talked about how he's lost some of his speed due to the euro 2016 injury. who knows what sought of injury awaits either of these guys.
