Elumelu - took UBA (and STB) from a national bank to a global powerhouse. With offices in 20+ countries in Africa, as well as USA, UK, and France, it puts Nigeria's financial markets on the world stage. The expansion into other parts of the world has improved the Nigerian brand, gives Nigerians and companies access to larger markets, and makes it much much easier to do business (manufacturing/investments/trading).

Dangote is the reason Nigeria is a major exporter of cement and no longer uses forex to purchase cement, sugar, (and until recently, noodles). Very soon, forex will not be used to import refined fuel. I would also say he plays a big role in the construction boom we're seeing all over Nigeria and Africa. Otedola - with 500+ distribution centers in the downstream sector, huge depots, he is one reason why you can get fuel for your car and ships, airplanes, gas and kerosine to cook with, oil for lubrication, and so on. He also supplies well production chemicals and drilling fluids to the upstream sector. It would be very hard for most Nigerians to go directly to the refineries to purchase these products so one cannot discount the massive investment and service done by people like him.

Between them, these three directly employ an estimated 50,000 Nigerians in the financial, petroleum, and manufacturing sectors, and who knows how many more are indirectly employed by the multiplier effect. (Dangote: 30,000+; UBA:10,000+; Forte: 400+ with staff in over 500 distribution centers/filling stations)

So not just billionaires in pocket. These men provide very real, tangible benefits to Nigerians - and like most market economies - they are handsomely rewarded for their contributions.

Elumelu is not the sole owner of UBA.
Under the CAMA1999, ie Company and Allied Matters Act of 1999, all financial institutions in Nigeria (including banks) must be public limited companies, and public limited companies in Nigeria, according to this same Act, must have a minimum of 7 persons as shareholders.
Also, the present UBA is a merger of the old UBA and Standard Trust Bank.
Also, it is common knowledge that UBA has well over a thousand owners, ie shareholders, of which Tony Elumelu holds the highest numbers. these
