ANSMEDIA:Why do Anambra traders hate paying their taxes? Yet in Lagos, they gladly pay 20 times what they are requested to pay in Anambra. Yet, it is in Anambra that they shout for state to build markets for them and tar roads leading to markets. |

ChimaAdeoye:The road is very critical to opening new areas for land and development of the state. Besides, the traffic jam on that road is becoming craz. I think if he budgets to do just 5KM every year , he will finish the road very well before his term in office. |

South East Governors Urged To Stand Firm Against Land For Ranching 12 JULY 2018 More commendations have trailed the Southeast Governors' unanimous rejection of donation of land for ranching in the region. This was observed when the ABS engaged some of the state residents in an interview on the recent development, in Awka. Reacting to the issue, the National President Anambra State Association of Town Unions, ASATU, Chief Alex Onukwue who is also the Deputy State President Ohaneze Ndi-Igbo, lauded the Southeast Governors on the decision, saying that the region as the area with the smallest land mass in the federation, has no land to donate to herdsmen and the federal government for ranching or the likes. Chief Onukwue who described cattle rearing as a private business of a section of the country, urged the federal government to make provision for the herdsmen in the North as the northerners are the people with largest land mass and are domiciled in the business. Contributing, the Head of Department History and International Studies, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Professor Dan Chukwu, applauded the Governors for speaking the mind of the people, describing the decision as a right move. Professor Chukwu observed that land donation or leasing has caused much problem in the country in the past, and urged the Governors to backup the decision with action, and to ensure that the implementation goes beyond Urban centers to checkmate the excesses of the herdsmen in the rural areas. Also speaking, an Awka resident Mr. Chuma Omego, advised the Federal government to concentrate on how to put an end to the incessant killings in the country, not on how to better the business of a section of the country. |

Anambra Govt To Relocate Articulated Trucks From Onitsha Industrial Harbour As Transport Terminal Project Nears Completion 13 JULY 2018 All the articulated trucks that constitute nuisance on roads in the Onitsha Industrial Harbor are to be relocated to a major transport terminal in Onitsha within the next two weeks. The Commissioner for Road, Rail and Water Transport, Mr. Uchenna Okafor disclosed this when he companied the Chairman of the State Physical Planning Board, to the harbor to assess the situation on ground. During the visit to the harbor, articulated trucks were seen parked in four lines along the roads in the layout, leaving a very narrow space for moving vehicles. The Transport Commissioner, Mr. Okafor who described the ugly incident as totally unacceptable, said the layout was well-planned with very wide and strongly-built roads to accommodate the anticipated heavy duty trucks that convey products and raw materials to and from the industries and not to serve as park. He revealed that the visit was directed by Governor Willie Obiano because of the negative security reports coming as a result of the activities of the truck drivers, adding that government has made plans to relocate all the articulated trucks to the Onitsha Urban Transport Terminal located at Upper Iweka in two weeks time when the Terminal must have been completed. The Chairman of the State Physical Planning Board, Bar Maduekwe said reorganizing the physical space of the State to reflect that of a well-planned state is a major charge on the Board by the Governor and the incidents around the harbor if unchecked, have the capacity to undermine government's plans to build a secure and environmentally-sustainable state. Some residents and operators of industries in the harbor including Barr Okey Obikeze, Mr. Oselloka Offor and Mr. Ben Ohia who regretted that eighty percent of the trucks have no business with the industries in the harbour, said their presence have not only led to a spate in crime and criminality but also has very negative health and environmental impact on the people. They appealed to government to immediately come to their aid and relocate the trucks to once again guarantee them safety and access to their homes and industries, as the trucks most times, block the entrance to their buildings. The Commissioner and the Physical Planning Board Chairman later proceeded to inspect work on the Onitsha-Enugu Urban Transport Terminal. At the site, it was observed that the terminal is at about seventy-five percent completion stage, as the entire two hundred by one hundred and eighty meter land space has been fully paved with concrete and a major borehole completed with finishing touches being put on a modern toilet facility at the terminal. The terminal which is the product of a Memorandum of Understanding between Anambra State Government, Detrazi Group and Urban Transport Terminal Limited signed last year, is expected to have sections for various types of vehicles and will also have a seventy-two room hotel for travellers. With the floodlight also being installed, the Terminal is also designed to run twenty-four hours, according to the Terminal Manager, Sir Michael Ezeani. |

Alhaji Danladi Ibrahim, Acting Managing Director, Nigeria Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), said on Wednesday that the Baro Inland water port has been completed and ready for inauguration in August. Ibrahim said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja. According to him, all cargo equipment needed for the Baro port to commence operation are being installed and the concession of the Onitsha port will also be concluded. “Baro port has been completed, the cargo handling the equipment is being installed right now. “It is expected that by next month the port will be ready for commissioning while the concession of the Onitsha port will also be concluded. “Any moment from now, the concessionaire will take over the Onitsha port. “The work on Baro port has been on for more than three years now and when completed, it will create close to two million jobs. “The port is the anchor of North West, North Central transportation and the port is linked to railway where cargo can be moved. “Onitsha port will serve the South East Nigeria; in fact, Onitsha port will be the most viable port as over 60 per cent of cargo in Nigeria goes to Onitsha, so it is going to be a very busy port,” Ibrahim said. He, however, said that Onitsha port would be concession based on government policy, that the private sector should be the operator while government will provide the infrastructure. NAN reports that Baro Inland Water Port is located at Baro, Agaie Local Government, Niger State. Source: http://www.nan.ng/news/fg-to-inaugurate-completed-baro-inland-water-port-in-august/

Stnomso:It is a good idea to get all those trucks parking on the street in Harbour industrial estate to leave the street. However, saying they will be relocated to upper Iweka is another blatant lie. There is no land anywhere around Upper Iweka big enough for a truck park. Part of the reason the expressway should be developed up to Awka is that it will make Nteje and areas like that accessible. There is simply no more land at upper Iweka to attach even a Keke park. We should get in the habit of thinking of city expansion towards Awka and towards Oba on Owerri road and Towards Nkwelle Ezunaka on Nkisi road. The idea of relocating everything to Upper Iweka, Awka road, Oguta road simply shows the person is living in Onitsha of 1970s when there were still spaces in these places. Onitsha has since outgrown Awka road, Upper Iweka and Zik's roundabout. Onitsha is now a metro-polis and not the former "Onitsha inland town" around Ojedi road and Ugwunabamkpa. People living in Nkwelle Ezunaka now technically live in Onitsha metropolis. |

AmericanQuarter:Not possible. How can 60% of the cargoes that come to Nigeria be going to only Onitsha? Last year, this man said 40-45% of the cargoes goes to the entire SE and now he has changed it to only Onitsha, how many then goes to Nnewi, Enugu and Aba? |
