First stop is in Ethopia (1hr55mins). second is in Dublin, Ireland (45mins). Third is in toronto (1hr30mins). Am i good to go with these?

Yeah you're good to go. No transit visa needed.

Please someone just made mention of 'transit visa', that if my flight is not a direct one: from lagos to edmonton, that i will be asked to show a transit pass at each stop we make. I myself dont even understand this, please can someone clear me?

I want to board ethopian airlines and there will be 2 stops before we finally get to edmonton. According to their website, once you put in your departure and destination, the flight lists comes out and all of them have their stops, the one am choosing even has the least number of hours and stops. How do i know which flight is direct or not and what is this about transit visa? Please i will really appreciate an explanation from someone, thanks guys!

I expect your two stops are in Ethiopia and Toronto. In this case you will not need a transit visa. The stopover in Dublin is a technical stop where you don’t even get off the plane while they refuel and change the flight crew.

One typically needs a transit Visa if you are exiting the airport to catch a connecting flight at another airport except for the US, which requires you to have a transit visa once you are passing through their airports...even when you don’t exit the airport at all.

Congratulations on your landing, wishing you a favorable stay.
Please i need your guidance. saw this comment from one of your posts

"I don't have a Cotonou stamp on my passport, I have my ID card and that's all I need to cross the border. Lots of people work across the border so an official ID card suffices.."

That's pretty much how I explained it, though the wordings might have been different. If you need it, send me a mail so that I send you a copy of the letter of explanation I used.

Now my question. Was this how you explained this? were any concerns raised by the VO as regards this? I took up a course in BR, though it was by correspondence, however, i had to travel to write exams which happened only over a weekend, twice a year, and didnt stamp my passports too.
Your response would really help as i am at crossroads on how to present my case when submitting.

Thanks in anticipation.

Waoo, nice landing gist. I wish you and your family success in your new home.
I read somewhere that you booked through their app, is it straightforward and did you pay with your naira MasterCard?

Yes I booked with their app, but I paid with online transfer. The account numbers are on their website. I couldn't find an option to pay with my mastercard.

1. There is no straight flight to Canada, you can always walk around the aircraft to stretch your feet and then when you connect cities.

2. There are walk-in clinics which give you requistions for tests and referrals to ob/gyn once you get your Alberta health card .

3. That is sufficient and for information purposes only, they'll still redo theirs.

4. It actually depends on you, if you like labels buying here is better but note that you shouldn't buy so much clothes because of seasonal changes. Buying winter clothes here is definitely better . I didnt shop from Nigeria for my baby, I bought and still buying my stuffs here.

All the best

Thanks a lot smiley

Canada is not keen on degrees but skills and certification. Your skills and professional background can guide you to know what Canadian certifications to go for.

Sometime it's okay to admit you don't know what the question is or simply just "jump and pass". And I don't mean that as an insult. As a Postdoctoral fellow myself, I struggled with the question of how to navigate my academic career in Canada and was on the verge of ditching academia. However, I have made tremendous progress over the last six months and I will share some tips and advice at the appropriate time as I am very busy at the moment. I just don't want you discouraging people, that's what compelled me to post this snippet.

@iamforcanada, dudade, and other prospective researchers in the house. I'd be sure to mention you when I get around to posting a detailed response.

Cheers and good luck to everyone.

Hello @Vcole,
Can you shed more light on how you were able to manage to take care of your baby whilst schooling as well as working. I am going to land in Calgary in a few weeks with my baby (about 6 months) and I am exploring / researching seriously about childcare options for me as I intend to look for work or school full time.
From my research, a lot of people prefers daycare to dayhomes and I have seen some bad news on the internet about this. what is your take on it? what are the regulations surrounding approved dayhomes? are they better?

vcole:
@czaratwork, hang in there. It takes a new immigrant on the average 5years to fully settle into Canada according to statistics. So it's easier said than done but you would be past this stage sooner than you think.

In my opinion, it is important to properly research job prospects in your intended field as well as jobs you may be able to get on arrival even if it is in a lower role or a "survival job" that you feel you would be comfortable doing to earn an income prior to arriving in Canada. It keeps you realistic and focussed by the time you get here.

For regulated professions, it is a realistic plan to be willing to settle for any job on arrival if you need an income quickly and then map out a route to obtaining your license if you so desire or map out a route towards an alternative career.

In my case, I already decided to go back to school prior to arrival to earn a qualification or two in an area that I have an interest in for the long term as well as one that would make me more employable. Obtaining my license is a long windy road that I would fit into the pipeline at some point along the way as it is not a top priority for me. I did job hunt for a few months and got a job working with special needs kids at a job fair but passed up on it for a govt sponsored employability skills training program. Most jobs readily accessible to foreign professionals with a health care background are nursing aides, dietary aides, care aides, community support workers, etc. I do not think I am well suited to those roles and did not want to get stuck in a job I didn't like for a while and so I enrolled in school and started this winter when my baby turned 6 months. So far, so good.

So if a survival job isn't something you feel you can handle, getting an additional qualification may be a good plan. Save up some funds for that purpose if you can. You could also consider applying for student loans from the government.

I find that Indian immigrants are a lot more realistic in their expectations as regards migration. They hit the ground ready to go and are willing to work at any job, get into school and work hard. It won't hurt for us to take a page outta their book.

For every success story of someone getting a job in their field soon after landing, there are several others slugging it out at Tim Hortons or Walmart. In the end, it will still turn out as a success story for both parties, just different timelines.

My husband booked his return ticket to US some weeks ago and had no issues at all. They are genuine and have very cheap rates.

Plz guys who have traveled, did you use Travelstart for your flight bookings? Did you experience any issue with them? They seem to have the cheapest fare rates but I'm reading a lot of negative reviews. Are there better options?

All caught up on the thread grin

Big thanks to all those who regularly answer questions and post inspiring pictures, you guys are the real mvps grin

Almost all my questions have been answered, in fact if I had been a little bit patient I wouldn't have needed to make the post about landing close to delivery because I later saw posts from other people. Big thanks to you all. Now let me go and submit these passports and get copr grin

How did you sort out accommodation and all? Can I get your contact?

I actually typed a long post yesterday but mistakenly touched adverts and lost the whole write up. I'll try to do the write up again as soon as possible.

Yes we've gotten a two bedroom apartment and moved in Sunday. I'll give the details of this later.

You can send me a mail.

No whatapp group but ask away. I know Ottawa well. Also, it gives everyone a chance to learn something new about Ottawa they may have not known.

Thanks maternal i had gone to the beginning of the thread again to start penning names of ottawa people.
Okay i booked airbnb already for 2 weeks but i need to get accommodation before the end of the period(preferably a house because i have 3 super active kids), but i did not get any response to any house i showed interest in on Kijiji

1 How else can i go about this accommodation (just to book viewing sef)

2 Please can we start ottawa whatsapp group please (instant response to critical question can be pof saving)

3 I keep hearing no area is too far in ottawa , please how is living in the sub hurb and finding job within.

4 How do we do people socialize (side story : i contacted RCCG overcomers chapel on instagram, lets just say maybe they will respond when i get there)

1) What is your budget, type of accomodation you want and when do you plan to land? I can do the search for you on Kijiji and organize for you to view when you land.

3) This is sort of true and not true (It takes me about two hours by bus to get to work, but if I drive, its 28 mins). It also depends on your direction of work. If you work down town, you would most likely meet traffic is you drive and parking can be an issue sometimes.

4) I have tried to organize meet ups here but non responded.
