Former Nigerian Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon (rtd) on Saturday visited Benue state Governor Samuel Ortom in Makurd, the State capital.

The Elder Statesman visited the state to commiserate with the government and people of the Benue over the killings in the state which he feared was taking a religious dimension.

Speaking to journalists at the Government House in Makurdi, Gen. Gowon expressed disappointment over the handling of security situation in the country, calling for immediate questioning of the leaders of Miyetti Allah.

He, however, commended Governor Ortom and the Benue State government for the way the issue was being handled.

He said “I think security agencies should invite and question the leadership of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore who had earlier threatened to unleash violence on Benue State.

“I was out of the country when two priests and 17 worshipers were killed in a church in the state during a morning mass. I extend my condolences to the government and people of the state.

“I am sad and worried at the religious dimension the killings is assuming, the authorities should redouble their effort to deal with the security situation because if that is not done, the country could descend into a religious war, with no one coming out victorious.

“For us to survive as a nation; we must learn to live together as one regardless of ethnicity or religion.”

Welcoming the elder statesman, Governor Ortom, represented by his Deputy, Engr Benson Abounu thanked him for coming to commiserate with them and lending his voice for the federal government to take decisive actions to end the violence.

He disclosed that though the killings have reduced due to the change of tactics by the military who upgraded their operation in the state from “exercise cat race” to “operation whirl stroke,” the threat is not over yet as killings still go on in many places.”

Even this Gowon of a man is inconsistent with his comments. One minute, dont blame buhari another minute, this like its by force to comment on something.

Whether its Gaddafi foot soldiers or meyetti people or BH or community conflict or herdsmen or armed bandit, the voice of the leader of the country should be heard and firm and wont rest till he gets conviction of the perpetrators but what i see is just a onesided action by the president when security forces are deployed for the wrong reasons and taking sides.

Why wont they be complacent in their duties to the nation. When security forces are ordered to intimidate people up and down, police go on a stop and search to stop a convoy of a senator who is commissioning projects? Where is the sense in that? Deploy 30,000 policemen to man an election, are we kidding ourselves, the subtle message is as clear as crystal without being told what the mission was. Benue i doubt has gotten up to half of that number. Am looking out for the numbers for osun cos it will say alot.

The impunity of the security forces is unparalleled im the history of Nigeria if we dont count the military era and this old man who is part of the travails of thia country is juat realizing this country's security is compromised. What a shame

I blame Buhari for all these.

The major reason why the killings has continued unabated is simply because of his silence and refusal to personally condemn the killings. I'm not referring to press releases from Femi Adesina or Garba Shehu.

Let Buhari verbally and publicly condemn the Fulani herdsmen killings and read the riot acts to the killers and these senseless killings will grind to a halt within a short time and let's see whether the security agencies will not sit up and act decisively with those killers.

Until he does that, his silence can only mean consent, according to philosophy of communication.
