Niger Delta are funny set, they drink ogogoro, burst pipelines and ask development money and shout our oyel with nothing to show for it except gragra ...so who wants to deal with those folks....I wonder why PH is even there seff

Funny enough everything you accuse the Niger Delta of happens everywhere in Nigeria even in Lagos except Abuja. So quit stereotyping a whole region cos of a few people and face reality. The average Nigerian is tribal, greedy, corrupt, sentimental and nepotistic and it has nothing to do with any particular tribe.

Was it the Niger Delta man that ruined Nigeria?

Just mind your fucking business!!!!!

Google Rolls Out Free Wi-Fi In Nigeria

By Oluwatobi Opusunju

Google has rolled out free fast speed Wi-Fi stations across Lagos. The Internet giant plans to extend the roll out to four more cities across Nigeria by 2019 as part of its commitments to support Nigerian startups and help grow the country’s bourgeoning vibrant tech scene.

This was made known this week at the Google For Nigeria event in Lagos. According to the tech giant, about 200 Google Stations will be rolled out across the five cities to make the WI-Fi connectivity accessible to millions of Nigerians.

The other cities expected to experience the roll out of the Google Stations before year-end are Abuja, Port Harcourt, Ibadan and Kaduna.

Google said sites where the Wi-Fi hotspots will be installed are markets, transport hubs, shopping malls, universities and other places with high population density.

The company also announced it was extending its Street Views into seven more cities Nigeria cities while the rest of Lagos state will be covered. Google Street Views will now be available in where the service is available in Kano, Ibadan, Kaduna, Port Harcourt, Benin City, Abuja and Onitsha.

At the moment, the Wi-Fi connectivity is currently available at about five significant locations in Lagos. They are Ikeja City Mall (ICM), Computer Village, MMA2 Domestic Airport, The Palms Mall and Landmark center. Plans to roll out in more locations across Nigeria will further bring the Internet access home to millions of Nigeria.

Country Director, Google Nigeria, Juliet Chiazor described the development as channel to help Nigerians and people in Africa better leverage the many opportunities on the internet.

“Today, at our second Google for Nigeria event, we announced more products and programs to help more people in Nigeria and across Africa benefit from the opportunities the web has to offer,” she said.

“We’re announcing Google Station for Nigeria: a program to provide high-quality, high-speed Wi-Fi hotspots in partnership with 21st Century, one of the largest fiber network providers in Nigeria.

“Google Station will be rolling out in 200 locations in five cities across Nigeria by the end of 2019, bringing Wi-Fi to millions of people,” she added. She also reckoned that the initiative would help address issues of affordability and access to data as well as broadband penetration.

Nigeria’s broadband penetration is only 22 percent. Government is aiming to up the figure to 30 percent by year end to further deepen the penetration.

Similarly Google’s CEO, Sundar Pichai commenting on the initiative on his Twitter page, said “Excited, we’re expanding Google Station to Nigeria, helping to make the internet more accessible to everyone with free wifi hotspots rolling out through the next year #GoogleForNigeria.”

Nigeria is the fifth country where the Google Station will be launched, after India, Indonesia, Thailand and Mexico.

Soon, there will be no more traffic around those aforementioned cities. I can just imagine every, both old and young on laptops near every Hotspot.

You people should sit down and watch how the quality of life for the people will rise in the coming years. I hope this is a permanent or at least ten year venture. It will benefit the common man a lot.

I know very well Nigerians will flood Fiverr, Quora and Reddit all thanks to this opportunity.

I don't really see that happening, there must be a major paradigm change in the economic climate of Nigeria for internet behaviour to change

Though I know more people who had excuses of expensive data bundles, will utilize this opportunity to keep up with their online business or learning, also depends on accessibility and availability

It’s a WIN WIN. Both sides would gain.
Do you stay around the gain areas? If you don't then you're not 'gaining.' I do BTW, but won't sit at a mall for hours because of WiFi. I read the news all over and it's making Nigeria look more like a shitty country instead of Google coming from the angle of business.

If you are ever going to use any free wifi
USE A GOOD VPN!

My worry isn't even the hackers, but Google itself, this is just an opportunity to mine more data from users, but they won't know... nothing is free!

I love progress. As much as this sounds like progress, don't complain if unemployment rises. Google gave free Internet at the expense of many companies who are heavily invested in the sector. Can you guys take a moment to find out how many African countries have bought into this Greek gift. I don't think our government think deeply through their actions. I can assure YOU Ethiopia will NEVER allow this happen in their country. Same with Rwanda. I hope you know there are no Uber in those countries I mentioned.

Google just introduced a substitute to a business product for free. If someone here can share with me how it creates jobs and doesn't put more people on the street. I will be happy to hear.

Advertising company should benefit a lot from this and thus see increase in budget and staff strength
Courier companies should benefit and thus increase staff strength
Online companies such as jumia and konga should also see increase in online orders
Music industry should benefit from this and see more downloads
Bookstore should see an increase in online sales of books
Companies should start experiencing quick turnover of their stocks, cost of inventory should go down, expect more physical orders of raw materials to produce finished goods.. Infact some manufacturing firm would need to employ more staff.
Once you have the tool that can identify your customer base with laser like precision, i think closing out all deals or sales is more than 90% guaranteed.

my own understanding!

Oga they're not different! I was born in the south, my mum is from the east, and I've spent 2 years in the west ( Lagos and Ogun states). The trend is everywhere!!!!!!!

The one of the Niger Delta trends more cos crude oil is Nigeria's gold!
It's only in rural areas in the south with negligible economic activities that are free of harassment

What economic climate? People thirsty for knowledge will find it. A hungry man looking for opportunities to make money will find several. The internet has created a bigger playing field for people to enrich themselves.
A job on Fiverr and similar platforms when completed is sure to earn the worker more than five times the Naira equivalent [5 USD in NGN = 1,807 NGN]. Tell me of a better real world motivation.

Though I know more people who had excuses of expensive data bundles, will utilize this opportunity to keep up with their online business or learning, also depends on accessibility and availability
You're doubting but at the same time mentioning a real world eventuality. I have never seen where access to useful information created lazier individuals. Never. A library is also a source of knowledge but we all know the black man hates literature.

Read properly, Onitsha is not on the list for free wireless hotspots, it is only on the list for potential street view expansion program.

These are the cities for free-Wi-Fi

Lagos (of course)
Abuja
Port Harcourt
Ibadan
Kaduna.

While the following three are to be included in street view with the above listed ones.

Benin
Onitsha
Kano
* The rest of Lagos state, meaning Lagos will be 100%
