Good morning everyone. I hope you had a great night? This is an open letter to all existing and prospective Nigerian undergraduates. Kindly avail yourself to go through some of the most vital points, who knows if it will eventually spur you to greatness.

My friends, do not let anyone fool you into believing that making a 2.1 outta school is inconsequential in getting a great job, that's a big fat lie. It is true that you need to be smart and intelligent before passing those skin tearing aptitude tests, but what makes you qualify for them in the first place is what you have on your certificate, albeit that's not a guaranty that you will pass, but you may never get to sit for them without a 2.1. This takes me to my next point.

BE PREPARED TO DEFEND YOUR 2.1 or First Class. Aside from graduating with a 2.1/first class, develop the mental abilities to pass some of the most logic defying tests.

Here is a simple list of top Nigerian companies you MAY not get the chance to start your career with if you do not have at least a 2.1 straight outta uni:

KPMG,
Accenture,
Ernst and Young,
PwC,
Dragnet,
All tier 1 banks except Skye and UBA banks,
Chams Plc,
Remita,
All top oil companies e.g Total, Schlumberger, Conoil, Mobile, etc., Nestoil,
Concept Group,
MTN,
Etisalat,
Globacom, and
Dangote.

Lastly, if you have the habit of running after top federal universities, stop it! Do not waste your young age chasing shadows. Yes, it is undeniable that great universities make great individuals, however, you must put into cognisance the Nigerian society you live in. Most top employers no longer look to employ candidates in their late twenties or early thirties, neither do they look through the name of university you attended; do not waste your age advantage all in the name of "I want to go to UI". Your so called university won't help you secure that great job you so desire. Presently, the maximum age for graduate trainee recruitment in top Nigerian companies is 26, this is going to drop in the nearest future. So my friends, always think ahead and make that decision now.

This is just a piece of advice. Thanks for taking your time to read. Cheers to a great future!

Referring to age OP I am disappointed in you...and others who don't know their right. No one should be discriminated against by age, sex, religious affiliation or even state of origin.

All the companies you mentioned will never post age limits in their respective countries of origin but because we have accepted to be used as Bunsen burner for every and any schmuck and their schticks we are left to imbibe these discriminatory failures into our academic and national lives.

If you smart you smart of you no smart cramming to pass aptitude test nah the least of your worries.(This I agree with you over.)

And that reminds me most oil and gas companies will take students from Uniben it's called having an Alumnus.

My advice for all under graduates and graduates, there is an oversupply of graduates in d labor market,nd demand for white collar job is on the rise,nd opportunities are getting fewer by the day!there is sadness and doom all because of dissapointment and unmet expectations, nstead of wasting ur free time in d university, gallivanting and wasting away, while not studying or in classes or when on holiday ,or looking for an invincible job for endless years, pls use the most creative part of your life, between 18 nd 27, and develope a skill, a passion, a trade, a fall back plan, cause that might actually be your saving grace, if I had spent all the time waiting for a job in horning my skill or present field of endeavour, I would ve been so much far off now, but am still grateful I was bold enough to damn my certificate, and after seven years, I ve no reason to work for no one,the journey will not be easy, but with God, it will be worth it, school hardly teaches us the true basics of life, or entrepreneurship skills, that is why you can find graduates working for secondary school leavers,nd being paid peanuts, it bleeds my heart! This advice is for the other 99% who will never get a blue chip job! Ultimately, ur destiny is still in your hands

Most of them do encourage themselves in their own folly saying that certificate is just paper but skill is major. Although their is an atom of Truth in it but no good company will ever give you the chance to show your skill if you don't have good certificate
This is not true.

As at 2016, Ernst and Young in the UK stopped requiring degrees. Lots of Microsoft, Google, Amazon and Apple engineers don't have degrees. The world is changing fast and very soon, the no degree required will get to Nigeria.

"One of the UK’s biggest graduate recruiters is to remove degree classification from the entry criteria for its hiring programmes, having found “no evidence” that success at university was correlated with achievement in professional qualifications."

Thats exactly why we are consumers instead of producers. The world biggest producers prefer skills.

I totally disagree with you. Graduating with a 2.1 doesn't validate you as been smart or being called for interview. Life is what you can offer not what is written on your certificate. These companies you mentioned have third class and 22 in their pay role. And they are doing just as good and great as the first class and second class holder. I would rather advice to work smart, graduate with a good grade if you can and have something extra to show when called upon that you can defend. . Thanks

This is a matter that I find baffling to say the least. how these companies are able to get away with the age discrimination they practice says a lot about the Nigeria's labor laws. I see no reason why anyone at any age cannot decide to choose what they want to do and where they want to apply. Its just blatant discrimination. These companies would never do this in other so -called developed societies where they are located. reminds me of my experience with KPMG Nigeria after I concluded my Masters in the US. asking me to produce my WAEC and birth certificate all because I wanted to work in the Big 4 after the program. I then decided to take my chances here then and got a job here with their competition. When I was applying and being interviewed , no one cared how old I was. they just wanted to know if I was a fit and if I could get the job done. I think its high time this ageism thing is addressed. its ridiculous!
