We all know the depths governance has continued to degenerate into in this country.

And we are all saddened by this.

It is already a long forgone conclusion that this era (occasioned by the kind of who acts as Nigerian leader today) is a regrettable error.

And this can be found in the humble turnaround by many who supported him (the president). Humble and embarrassing as they are aware they publicly invested themselves into ensuring the emergence of the error we experience today.

Indeed, no one could have stopped Buhari from becoming president except the rules, which seemed an opportunity provided by God our creator to save of from today's troubles without any fingers being pointed at anyone for attacking candidate Buhari in 2014/2015.

One of the new pre-requisites for every presidential candidate was the provision of their WASC certificates. This requirement is much lower for the presidency than for say the office of governors, which requires that the candidate be a graduate from a tertiary institution and no one had any candidate to target in mind when the pre-requisite to qualify as candidate was added.

But somehow, the press got to find out that candidate Buhari's WASC certificate was missing, and his failure to produce it became sensational drama within the polity.

The ruling party chose not to pursue the matter through the courts, not willing to destabilize the polity and nation.

Some individuals sued the candidate (and the INEC) to court on account of the candidate they let run, who according to INEC's own rules, did not qualify to run as candidate.

The last case against the president (which was not noticed until months after his occupation of office) was silently withdrawn by the prosecution, a lawyer, after he had previously spoken with courage that he was not afraid of the threats he received because it will be known who hurt him if anything should happen to his life.

Yes, he withdrew it silently in that matter where the fed government employed 13 SANs in response to the request for his WASC and has never spoken in public again.

We cannot tell how he was prevailed upon but there is one person that remained mum all through the saga, as if the ball was not in his court.

As if responsibility had not beckoned on him.

As if he had the right to not do what, without any recourse to any kind of analysis, was one of the very basic requirements of his job.

Like a bird who will not chirp.

Like a cat who will not meow.

Like a dog who will not bark,

and like a parrot who will not talk...

...professor Atehiru Jega stood on the stage with all spectators looking to him, but acted as if his crowd was on stage as he looked on to the crowd as a man would look on to the stage, waiting for the performance of the performer to begin.

Professor Atehiru Jega failed this country and everyone in it, when he mysteriously failed to follow the simple rules INEC itself had laid down for the qualification of candidates, and disqualify candidates that did not meet the rules or requirements.

Till today, what can he give as his reason for not doing a simple routine part of his job. I am sure there are many candidates that may have been rightly disqualified for one reason or the other.

However, he could not bring the strength or straightness of his perceived person to bear on what was a decision that had no other right or logical alternative other than to declare candidate Buhari as disqualified for not being able to meet its (INEC's) own minimum requirements for candidacy.

Professors are chosen for a reason for that job. It is assumed they have the work ethics, intellect and character to execute the job without fear or favour. If that was the assumption, we were all wrong because Jega really monumentally failed and perhaps should be ashamed of himself.

I say this because, if a journalist should suddenly ask him in an interview today, what his reasons were for not declaring the candidacy of Buhari void, I find it hard to imagine any kind of coherent response he will come up with.

If Nigeria has gone backwards today, we might blame the voters that voted for president Buhari; we might blame the big wigs like Obj that threw their weight around him; we might blame anybody, even GEJ for being too for not being hard on corruption and losing Nigerian's trust, but there is no one we can singularly blame as much as we can singularly blame professor Atehiru Jega

If Buhari was disqualified and APC produced another candidate that won, tell me, would Nigeria have been like this?

Stop being ignorant,it’s not Jega’s Job to disqualify a candidate,it’s the work of your judiciary!!!Jega’s job is to conduct a free and fair election and announce the winner.....

I do not know everything and I do not claim to be omniscient.
Let those who know say.
Meanwhile, I will do a quick search on this myself right now.

A quick search has led me to these two articles and events. One is from 2015, and the other from earlier this year

I am not Igbo and I am the OP.

I am saying if they had given Fashola the presidential ticket in APC, and he won, do you think the form the government has taken under Fashola would have been the same as have seen and experienced it under Buhari?
