It is no longer news that the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) invaded the premises of telecoms company, MTN, across Nigeria from Monday July 9, 2018, ostensibly to picket the company but ended up carrying out acts of violence against the staff of the company and vandalizing equipment. The labour union went to protest the casualisation and poor welfare of its members by the telecoms giant but instead left in its wake, blood, destruction and what some described as carnage.

Critical national infrastructure across the country were reportedly breached and attempts were made to compromise them like turning off the independent power plants at the Ojota switch station, Lagos. Infact, staff of MTN had to create a human shield around human resources executive, Esther Akinnukawe, for her to escape the head office of MTN as NLC members were trying to beat her up. Many members of staff were allegedly harassed and forced to sing along with NLC members who were recorded in various violent acts of vandalism.

Of course many right-thinking individuals have called out NLC’s act, including UK-based accountant and social commentator, Feyi Fawehinmi and veteran radio presenter, Jimi Disu with some calling the act by the NLC a fund-raising exercise.

How did the Nigerian Labour Congress descend so low to the point of being regarded as a collection of touts by Nigerians, a clear departure from the intellectual rigorousness and sagacity the Nigerian labour movement is well known for in the times past? What can the labour union do to conform to the International Labour Organisation (ILO) standard and rescue its battered brand?

1. NLC should ask itself why have Nigerians who previously jumped when NLC sneezed become apathetic to its cause? Why are people showing outrage at the violence meted out against MTN by NLC on various social media platforms? Why did their people have to resort to violence? Is MTN really guilty of casualisation, or it is the companies that they outsourced to that are guilty of such? Is there a better/more effective way of engagement that won’t generate so much bad blood? After these questions are asked, then they should go on to the next step.

2. Come up a strategy: Offense, defense or placatory. I would advice placatory in this case and a mixture of the two other options going forward. Imagine what a picture of NLC President and the CEO of MTN shaking hands at the MTN headquarters can do to show Nigerians that NLC is not anti-business but there was only miscommunication which they are addressing internally.

3. Open social media accounts that are RESPONSIVE and ENGAGING, in order to showcase the constructive works that the organisation is doing. I have not found any account on the social media platforms I use (Nairaland, Facebook, Twitter) that claims to be owned by NLC. Even if they have, how responsive and engaging are they? Let the PRO or President handle it directly so people can get direct access to decision-making structure of the congress.

Not really. NLC died when they acceded, no, sold out Nigerians during the 2012 fuel subsidy sttike. That was the last major NLC orchestrated strike.
They've been on a downward spiral since then.
It's such a big shame.

labour cannot tell me that they re just finding out about MTN and some other big firm that involve in turning Nigerians to slaves..
I worked with MTN for a while though it was outsourced but we had labour union leaders who were aware of the suffering that we were going through, but instead of finding a lasting solution to it, they would rather meet with the head of the company then reach an agreement that will only benefit their selfish interest..funny enough we paid monthly from our salary just to be part of the so called union....
MTN on its part were fully aware of our situation but nothing was done, instead they are focused only on giving your best at your own detriment..We were made to work extended hours without pay, workers were sacked at will..in fact once management feel that they re not breaking even, they start laying off staff without compensation..I saw hell working for that company...

Violence is never the solution. Agreed that MTN treats their workers like slave. Yes correct. But the question is Does the Nigerian government not treat it's citizens like slave..? People resign from MTN to work for smaller companies with higher pay the senior executives will tell u that they don't care.. Do u blame them ? A country with many jobless people will become slaves and think MTN is doing them a favour when it pays them 300k..the ones that are managers get like 700k plus. Even those ones tax has killed their salary.. Only the senior people enjoy small and earn 900k above and they are very few b4 u get there nko. U will have grown white hair to retire or get sacked by them.. Wasted life..

Every year they increase salary by 80k to 100k but if u are wise and have a good CV u can see in between the nonsense and resign to a smaller company with bigger pay . Those that are not wise remain and earn 300k to 400k not because they want to stay but because there are no jobs in Nigeria.. What is funny is the highest population in mtn are casual staff. If u see how they treat them in staff bus.. U will almost weep for them. A rich company like MTN that has money treating casuals in Nigeria like goats and slaves in something as little as staff bus . What is staff bus.. Those casuals cry everyday when they see how MTN spends money Lauching products every week. In South Africa that nonsense doesn't happen cuz those in South Africa don't allow rubbish. But in Nigeria they can get away with anything once they bribe this NLC people now. Noise will stop.. Is it not Nigeria again? Lol . A nation of stooopid people without self worth and human dignity

Blame your mumu govt.. Don't blame MTN.. According to Nigerian standards.. MTN has tried as they have employed many staff. If they like they should protest from now to tomorrow.. Nothing will change

Lies upon lies
I guess mtn paid u handsomely to spill these falsehood online to salvage what is left on their stinking and nauseating reputation. No matter how much u collected as payment to do ur work, the damage done by these slave traders in Nigeria against Nigerians cannot be repaired nor quantified in monetary terms. What goes around comes around don't forget that.
While u spread falsehood here intended to defend mtn, Karma has a way of changing the songs of men. Hoping u don't find yourself one day as an mtn staff then u understand what ur fellow Africans in their payroll here in Nigeria are crying about.

Good luck to u defending mtn and slaughtering what is left of NLC

I hope whoever wrote this isn't a Nigerian

Otherwise he / she is cursed.

When MTN was mercilessly exploiting Nigerians, claiming per second billing wasn't possible for 3 years where were you? The moment Glo came and introduced it, it miraculously became possible. When they were collecting 30k for 1 SIM, where were you?

I blame the idiots who formed a human shield around the senior Management team of MTN.

In South Africa when Nigerian businesses are being burnt down, at times the Police has been accused of looking on.

I pity Nigerians who have sold their souls for money. So shameful.

MTN, DSTV and most other South African businesses thrive here and fleece Nigerians as much as they can with connivance of our leaders
