You are absolutely not correct. He died on August 12, 1989. That is exactly 29 years.

I did not write that he was studying for his law degree when he died.

That post was about why his death hurt me more than usual and that was because, unlike other professionals, he always came back to play for Nigeria

1) Even when the NFA did not pay for flight tickets

2) Even when he was studying for his law degree

3) He was always the first to show up in camp even when others showed up late

4) He never made demands or gave conditions before playing for Nigeria

5) He was simple and a devout Christian, even when other professionals were showing up with girls and flashy cars.

1) Samuel Okwaraji, Stephen Keshi, Peter Rufai and Coach Yusuf Salami during a Seoul '88 Olympic qualifier at the National Stadium in Lagos.

My brother,
This match was played at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu and featured Nigeria against Algeria. We won it 2-0 with goals from Ademola Adeshina and Henry Nwosu. Nigerians celebrated well because the Algerian goalkeeper, Drid Nasseridine was regarded at the time as the best in Africa after his heroics against Brazil in the 1986 World Cup (a match Algeria lost 1-0 but totally outplayed the Brazilians).

Abeg keep quiet jare. That match was broadcast live on NTA and we beat Angola 1-0 with a goal from Stephen Keshi. Austin Eguavoen lost a penalty in the first half, and David Ngodigha saved a late penalty from Angola in the 2nd half.

The player who first responded to the Okwaraji when he fell was Samson Siasia. There was no resuscitative equipment and the Volkswagen Kombi bus that served as the ambulance had no battery and could not start.

About 8 fans died that day as well after a stadium that was supposed to hold about 45,000 held 80,000, with fans being thrown down from the terraces.

In other climes, those responsible for ticket sales, stadium management and health care on that day would have gone to prison.

Samuel Okwaraji was a patriotic Nigerian. He played with passion for Nigeria and died on defending the colours of this country. May God grant him eternal rest and conform his family. What a brilliant footballer he was !

Okwaraji was a perfect model of a very selfless Nigerian. His face ought to be on one of our currencies or stamps because what better way to show young Nigerians what it mean to serve your country without expecting anything in return. To him, serving Nigeria was a thing of pride.

Even on the pitch, you could see his level of commitment. Not like now that our players walk around on the pitch as if nothing is at stake. Can't forget that sad sunny afternoon.

My elder brother told me he died cuz he fired a shot against India when India was beating Nigeria 99-0. That when he fired the shot the ball turned to stone.

Well, I decided to continue the fable so I told it to one of my younger brother too. This one just went straight to google it angry
He almost kill me with jest that day.

All the lies my big bro told me I can't even do same on my younger ones cuz of google.
And I can't take revenge on my big bro cuz he's now in the Military. angry
That tale predate Okwaraji. It has been told from to successive generations . My generation hard a different story and that was more original. It was about Teslim Balogun, the first Nigerian to play international football. He played in England even before independence. There is nothing perfectly accurate about the whole story though, they were spun then to paint the legend in larger than life status.

theoldpretender:

Nigeria squads in the 1980-90 period were 'good', but they usually found it hard to qualify for the World Cup....and they missed the 1986 Nations Cup.

But record wise...

Nations Cup 80 CHAMPIONS!
Nations Cup 82: Out in first round (and lost to Algeria in the World Cup Qualifiers.).
Nations Cup 84 : Lost 3-1 to Cameroon in the final at Abidjan (Yuck).
Nations Cup 86: DNQ
Nations Cup 88: Lost 1-0 to Cameroon in Maroc. in the final.
Nations Cup 90: Lost 1-0 to Algeria in the final in Algeria.

Kind of mixed..in a way.

80's was a great foundational period for Nigerian football administration. As I believe, we already developed the playing talent pool in the 60s/70s however the admin was lagging way behind.

We missed out on Argentina '78 due to errors of our own doing by appointing a faulty manager (IMO), players out of position & name selection rather than form and ultimately undone by an own goal to eventual finalists, Tunisia. We did finish 3rd at the Afcon.

Otto Gloria won us Nigeria '80 with an almost entirely home based squad but we went on to blow over everything in '82 by making the same mistakes of 1977! Retired Christian Chukwu and co were plucked out of retirement to bench form players in our final WC qualifier which we subsequently lost to an easy to beat Algeria who went on to have a stunning WC. Libya '82 Afcon was equally a round 1 failure.

84 was a rebuilding period with a local manager and entirely home based squad coming 2nd behind Cameroon while '86 saw complete reversal due to mismanagement yet again. Failed to qualify for both Afcon & WC.

88, yet another rebuilding based on the fusion of the successful flying eagles of '87 into the existing squad and invitation of foreign pros by the new foreign manager. Another Afcon final loss to Roger Milla's Cameroon!

Subsequent events led directly/indirectly to our successful 90s. Okwaraji died (this sacrifice leads to better appreciation of footballers' jobs/risks), Ministry of Sports begin to loose its strangle hold on NFA, introduction of a "professional" league breeds new set of playing talent and especially football agents, SAP ruins Nigeria's economy leading to an exodus of players to foreign countries (first to Cote d'Ivoire, Gabon and then North Africa and then on to Europe) finally placing the future of Nigerian football in Europe.

A mere ten years from coming 2nd at Cameroon 84 with a 100% home based squad, we won the Tunisia 94 Afcon with a 99% foreign based squad with Egypt based Emmanuel Amunike scoring our winning goals in the final.

So the 80s was a great time for our football. It will be so great to see us develop such quality of playing talents again seeing that admin has surely improved these days.
