Hallo everyone,

I note that most of you here have either taken the DALF or DELF or have some advanced French knowledge, so to further reassure you all, believe me when I say the TEF Canada is not a difficult exam; it is not designed to be. To put it into perspective, as a native English speaker, you will find TEF easier than IELTS. Again, DALF is a more difficult exam than TEF, as it is supposed to give access to French university studies, while TEF is simply a measure of working knowledge.

As language learners you will be familiar with the concept that "comprehension is always easier than expression", so it's easier for language learners to understand written language first, then spoken language second, before they gradually come to expressing themselves, first in written, then in spoken language. Most people's language learning outside an area where the language is in daily use follows this pattern, so my advice would be to focus on both written and oral expression which are likely to be most people's weak points (mine too).

When I was learning French, our instructor taught us to spend as little time actually studying and more time in immersion. In other words, listen to French TV and radio (TV5 on DSTV or the CCTV French), read the French papers online (lemonde.fr, lesoir.be, etc.) and the rest will flow naturally. I must say it worked for me. Get a comprehensive book on French grammar (if you're considering writing TEF you should have grammar already at your fingertips anyway) and practice writing in French by drafting a copy of your daily communications (SMS, WhatsApp messages, etc.) in French all the time, and you should be fine.

Good luck to all.

Hi Cyberknight,

Thank you a million times for the bolded. Yours is the first positive review of the TEF I've seen (And believe me I've searched high and low and for a long time too...everyone else has been of the view that the TEF is unnecessarily difficult)

Thanks for the other suggestions as well.

Seriously? I'm promoting whatsapp group? I'm certain you didn't bother to read the messages I was responding to. Neither did you read my response carefully. But it's fine.

C'est vraiment la faute de Nairaland. Si j'avais écrit en français, aurais-tu compris ce que j'ai écrit ? Mdr... De toute façon, je refuse d'être distrait. C'est TEF dans mon esprit maintenant. grin

It's really Nairaland's fault. If I had written in French, would you have understood what I wrote? Mdr ... Anyway, I refuse to be distracted. It's TEF in my mind now. ; D

Yes I read the post you responded to and you supported the idea of WhatsApp group and asked people to drop number to be added.

It was suggested by someone. And if you read the thread you'd see others have been making such request. I merely bought the idea. But no, I'm the one promoting Whatsapp group.

Bro, please, go and enjoy your Sunday. We francophones and francophiles are not fighters. The last thing we need on this thread is negative energy. And remember to pray for all TEF candidates in church today. Thanks. grin

Meanwhile, isn't Google translator a life saver? Just that it couldn't translate "mdr" and also left the smiley as punctuation marks. wink

The thread is there to be read by all. If you believe someone had not suggested whatsapp group before now or that I birthed the idea, myself, fine. I have no business convincing you otherwise.

Keep reading the thread though. You might pick some French.

T E F.
i called alliance francaise lagos and the told me they only have space for about thirty people for the exam that will hold this december.

out of the population of 160 million nigerians. im surprised provision will be made for only 30 people. If nigeria has such a tiny number of french speaker and french language learners how come i couldnt find a job with my B2.

Delf exam is 10,000 naira

TEF is over 100k

why?!!

Delf is way way difficult than TEF. If u fail one of the sections in delf u get no certificate even if your score is 80% overall.

what i sha know is that i will leave this country 2019 by Gods grace wether its study visa or express entry or quebec nomination.

Good morning brother.

First, the 30 slots doesn't mean only 30 people will write in Nigeria. It means the centre you reached out to can only take 30 people in December. Each centre has a maximum depending on their capacity. And there are centres all over Nigeria.

It also doesn't directly tell the amount of French speakers we have in Nigeria cause a good deal of them neither writes TEF nor DEF except the need arises.

As for DELF being more difficult, I've heard that too. But let's be more detailed. Yes, you don't get a certificate if you fail a section in DELF but the again, in TEF, you're always required to make a minimum score in each section else the certificate won't fetch any point. So I see no difference here. DELF measures you based on a level while TEF difficulty progresses as you're writing the exam so it's easy to get the illusion that's easier cause of the first set of questions.

I think TEF is more expensive cause of its usage/acceptance.

I'm not disputing the possibility of it being simpler. I'm only saying we shouldn't let our guards down. With your B2, I want to believe TEF won't pose an issue to you.

No.

Only Quebec PNP takes DELF.

You can get more info on the CIC website.

Good afternoon everyone,

I must commend this initiative as I am also taking French to be able to boost my score.

I would like to ask if TEF is taken every month? As I have seen people talking about September, October and December exams.

I started private classes in May from scratch and I am using Objectif Express textbooks and I would like to take the exams in January 2019

Thank you once again, @justwise, @etrange as well as all contributing.

It depends on the centre.

I think Alliance Francaise Nigeria does theirs every month.

I bought it but it was way too expensive. The one you have should serve.

Now I'm thinking... What if we meet to read together? I'm thinking of going to the YouRead Library at Sabo from Tuesday. Is anyone preparing for TEF and will be available for studying together?

I'd give anything to be there. But then again, my work wouldn't permit me. Sadly.

You need CLB 7 in order to get additional 30 (or 15) points for French language skills. See here

Hello everyone, thanks to the originator of this offshoot of the Canada thread and thanks to all, for the links with study materials.

Just to confirm that @njbybrthnly is 100% correct. You will get points for French from CLB 5...anything below CLB 5 is ZERO points.

There are 4 abilities just like IELTS, the ranking is:

CLB 5 or 6 - 1 point per ability
CLB 7 or 8 - 3 points per ability
CLB 9 or 10 - 6 points per ability

However if you are able to get CLB 7 and above, in addition to the points stated above you will get an extra 30 or 15 points....depending on your IETLS English CLB scores.

So aim for CLB 7 and above if you are looking for mega points.

BONNE CHANCE A TOUS!
