This is Ese Brume. She's a Nigerian track and field athlete competing in the long jump event. Ese won gold at the just concluded African Championships in Asaba. Two years ago she won gold at the Commonwealth Games. But the Nigerian authorities have refused to pay her her entitlements for the African Championships. According to her, they were promised $100 as daily allowance for the 7-day event and $3,000 for each gold medal won. What she is owed is therefore $3,700, roughly N1.4m. But when it was time to pay them, they were given N107,000, that's about $300 which didn't even cover their daily allowance of $700. Majority of the Nigerian athletes collected the money because 'at all-at all' get as e be. But Ese and two other athletes, Divine Oduduru and Tobi Amusan rejected the money because it was a blatant insult. Many of us will agree it is.

Ese is not happy with Nigeria, not just because of the money but because nobody cared about how she prepared for tournaments. According to her, her mind is already set towards preparations for 2020 Olympic games but the Nigerian authorities won't start thinking about that now until a few weeks to the event. Yet when an athlete like her who combines her athletics with her education in Cyprus makes sacrifices to prepare all by herself and eventually win something, the country will insult her on top of it.
