They are not so different from each other. I used my work hospital back in Nigeria. It was one of those expensive ones in Lagos. My infant was hill and on admission. I remember clearly how their pediatrician was hardly around. He was a senior doc in of the the general hospital and was using the private hospital as locum. The country i live in is not perfect, but there is accountability .

Sometimes it's unfortunate how the blame always go the Doctor.what is the definition of Your negligence.you didn't mention that all the bed in the ward were full.there was no space.thats why they even attended to him by giving him drip in the bus.is it the fault of the Doctor that there is no space!i was also in A&E the Doctors where overwhelmed,there were a lot of patients waiting outside .this is also connected to fact that LASUTH is on strik.lagos state has refused to employe more doctors those there too are overwhelmed.so when people come Social media and criticize the Doctors without get the full gist it's quite unfortunate.go to LASUTH and find out how many patients a doctor see in a day..it's unfortunate you lost your brother,we have a system failure in the health sector.despite the renovation of the ER its is small to meet the population of lagos.may his soul rest in peace

Honestly, this is so touching. I have never been this touched in a while. Nigeria health care system and facility is in shamble at the moment. Many of these doctors have forgotten the Hippocratic oath they took before they became doctors. Saving lives should be their primary focus and all cases should be considered emergency to them. I can remember vividly when I was still in Nigeria. I was rushed to the hospital one day late in the night. On getting there, the nurse that we met was pregnant and was reluctant in attending to me. She later told me to come back the following day that the doctor at duty wasn't around. She told me to go and use paracetamol that I will be OK. I was almost crying. How can Nigerians be this heartless, "I said in my mind." That was the day I knew that our lives are not safe in the hands of Nigerian medical practitioners. I went home sad that day, facing the realities of life all alone. Nigerian hospitals couldn't save my life when I needed them most.

If what just happened had been in the Western world, the doctor on duty will be charge to court. A suit will be filed against him based on his own negligence. I've even seen in an Indian movie where a doctor was given 25 years imprisonment due to some petty negligence by the doctor. It was just a common surgery that was to be conducted on a minor. Due to negligence of the mother, the child ate an hour to the operation as opposed to the conventional rule of not eating 6 hours to any medical surgery. The doctor was later told by a ward nurse but because he was on call, he was carried away. They did the operation successfully but after few minutes, the food the child ate backed up to his throat and was turned into a poison. That was how they started running helter-skelter, trying to evacuate the food from his throat "something they should have done before commencing the surgery." The child later died and all effort by the doctor to bury the case in the court of law was proved abortive by his fellow doctors and the mother of the child. Though the mother caused everything. But the doctor was the one that served the jail time. If our judiciary sector is still functioning in Nigeria, the hospital should be charged to court ASAP while the family of the deceased should also hire a human right activist.

The truth is that there was no bed space.and there was nothing the doctors could do about that.it the reason he was given drip in the bus.which is even against the rule self .but they realize it's important to do that.i was also there .the doctors where overwhelmed

I support you sir. A sad story really and many unfortunate issues involved. A busy hospital, a decadent system, a needy population and an unenlightened populace. People think doctors and nurses are insensitive to their plight yet a line was sited for the young man in the vehicle because there was no bedspace in the emergency room. Is that not a sign the system was overwhelmed? I cannot imagine empty beds inside and people will be walking back and forth to take care of him in the car. When LUTH ,UCH, LASUTH were built what was the population of Nigeria? In what way have we reacted infrastructure wise to the population explosion? The population of Nigeria was about 42 million when LUTH started operations but around 200m now.
By the way Local government authorities are responsible for primary and comprehensive health centres and there are no restrictions in constructing one .
A fact of life is we , all of us, will die one day, whether we are in UK, USA, or in Nigeria. We can't live forever no matter how good health care is. The unfortunate aspect is that we are loosing a lot of "savable" life's in Nigeria. And the problems causing these loses are deeper than the " doctors and nurses are wicked" mantra.

Lots of reasons your thoughts won’t work. I have been to this Luth before, even this year. The number of emergencies they get is alarming. We even queued for about 1hr 10 mins to pay for registration. I had to do lots of tests and at each stage I had lots of people before me.

So I personally think there are not enough hospitals and they are short staffed as well. It’s really pathetic what happened to this family and I don’t wish it on anyone - even on my enemies, but it’s just the situation of the Nigerian system. I am fortunate to be a lawyer, and I tell you that they will only be successful in court if they could prove that the medical personnel were idle, which is usually difficult. Someone can’t be negligent if he genuinely was attending to other emergencies.

It’s such a pity and I wish Local Governments can be given more autonomy to establish Hospitals and provide other social benefits rather than rely on State and Federal government hospitals. Nigeria really needs restructuring

I had to hold my self from laying heavy curses on you. Even my aunty who was an ex staff of luth experienced this same thing. Luth is a very corrupt place same as any federal hospital. What they do there is that they have private people you pay for bed space before they will you inside emergency. No matter how critical your case is, if you don't no anybody inside luth, a doctor or a very powerful matron. They will treat the victim inside the car first. The treatment is usually to pass drip. A small student doctor will come and ask some questions but real treatment will not start till after some hours. I no first hand what they do in luth And its not because there is no bed space. They are just wicked and heartless.


God forbid that the patient needs a ct scan or any test that will require some kind of equipment. Luth doctors spoil the equipment because many of them have private practise around luth. So you will be reffred to the doctors hospital to do a ct scan or an endoscopy. All of them there from nurses to doctors are useless. Only people they listen to are VIP people. People who can afford to pay extra and not a commoner.

There is bed space. Forget it. You don't know what is happening in that luth ooooo. Forget all that rubbish. Enter the wards and you will see empty beds. If not that I had first hand experience. Forget that hospital. Its a death trap.

There actually are restrictions. So constitutionally, schedule 4 of the 1999 Nigerian Constitution (as amended): you rightly mentioned, states that LGAs are responsible for providing primary healthcare facilities.

The problem is that they carry out these responsibilities, in practice. as administrative units of the States they are located. So it means they provide the facilities within the competence an provisions from of their state governors.

When the Federal government makes budget allocations from the CRF, it’s usually sent to a State/LGA joint account - which, more often than not, is within the discretion of the state governors to allocate to each LGA in its territory.

So the problem is that the LGAs end up getting meagre funds for its projects - which usually is only enough to pay its staffs and a few minor projects. The LGAs lack autonomy and independence. It’s a huge problem for us, ideally, fiscal federalism, which Nigeria purports to adopt, requires that lower tiers of government should be economically self-sufficient and independent since it’s the closest government to the people.

So, in theory, they are meant to provide these facilities. But in practice - the chain of transactions for providing funds to these lots gives too much leeway for some parties to embezzle these funds so that LGAs are rendered non-effective.

I personally think the LGAs should have more powers in this country with a weaker central government. That way, we can hold them more accountable for their failures.

It is disheartening. I wonder why Nigerians won't rise up to demand that things are done the right way. Where the president does not even believe in the health care system of his country. I suffered the same faith at University of Ibadan those animals with no milk of human kidnesss let my father die in an ambulance. A very resourceful man in his field. Failed country I must say. But most times people don't always give honest accounts on issue like this for two reasons: to blackmail/ vituperate ; to garner sympathy.
Why most patients die in such critical condition, most times, is because they don't present at the hospital in a good time. The patients condition must have really gone bad before they are brought , and only little or nothing could be done at such cases.
People have forgotten that the facilities in most our tertiary health institutions are overstretched due to overpopulation.
Just last Tuesday I was in the same Accident and emergency in LUTH when a young lady was brought from Navy Hospital on account of difficulty to breathe following some injury sustained on a road traffic accident 4 days prior to presentation. This patient was kept in Navy hospital for more than 3 days without brain MRI, to at least rule out brain injury. But when the patient was in respiratory distress, she was rushed down to LUTH. She was promptly attended to , admitted, and while still taking various samples for laboratory investigations, the patient passed on. I'm sure the relatives might as well be telling people that LUTH did not handle the patient well.
Bottom line: the facilities in private institutions are overstretched and might not go round, most times, even in emergency cases; and people should bring their ill relatives to the hospital early enough to allow meaningful medico-surgical interventions.

Read an ignorant person saying all cases are emergencies, hell no! the fact that he was seen in the car points to the very obious fact that bedspace was unavailable. What should the doctors have done? go to their homes to bring beds? Lasuth is currently on strike. What plans are on ground for emergencies by government? but doctors must take the blame yea. What proper referral mechanisms is in place to transfer patients from centre to centre. How about extra beds? all those dont matter to Nigerians. Once the chance to blame doctors arise, take it! On even said all the workers must be executed.
If Nigerians channel the energy they spend blaming doctors on blaming Government, things will be better!

This is someone I personally gave and asked for money from my colleagues and other healthcare workers from o. Just to be sure the child was fine before referring.

One thing you will realise is this. The system isnt just bad, the people are worse. Run for your lives! practice in a sane clime!

I can feel your pain. I had this horrible experience exactly 3 years ago with General hospital, Ifako-Ijaiye, LASUTH and LUTH on a single day.

I took my younger brother to Ifako on emergency. No competent hands, so I was referred to LASUTH, where they said there is no bed and was referred to LUTH. At LUTH, it took several hours before they came to take his BP under the sun in an open place. Imagine someone who is weak already. After this, they said there is no bed, but told me to go and see if I can get from a private facility within the complex. The place too was already filled up.

It took the grace of God and a friend who later recommended a private hospital after we've wasted several hours looking for health solution from government hospital.

Since then, I never prayed that they take even my enemy, talk less of a friend to any Lagos government hospital.

They are all death trap full of arrogant medical elements!

My brother, the entirety of medicine as a profession is doomed if you ask me, you essentially suffer and work long hours for nothing. 'Nigerian doctors' are in a different kind of trouble, we are endangered species... run from people who wont think and rather do you harm than act intelligently. the same people complaining here are the people that are very bad and negligent at their jobs, collecting bribes at every opportunity and treating waiting customers bad. their sense of ethics only comes awake in hospitals

Yes, we can't blame them for the lack of sufficient capacity to cater for the daily demand on their facilities, but they can do better on their attitude. Many of them lack manners.

but your conclusion veered off from your initial assertions which was surprising and was why i responded.
I didn't see lack of empathy emphasized in your write up. you said you had to go round because no one will take you because of space and then gbam, you go off on the medical personnel like there was some other undertones we didn't get to read.
the impression it gives medical personnel doing their best in dire situations is to withdraw more in th face of such misguided blame and hate.
i have been to several other public offices in Nigeria and the scale of people neglect and corruption is much worse of. even trying to get a passport is an incredible calamity so before you start pointing fingers, look at yourselves and around you first.
human response is reciprocal and doctors despite being professionals are human in the end and may lose it if overwhelmed and tired. Empathy is an entirely different matter from the issue here which is supposed negligence, all health care professionals must show empathy but it is increasingly hard to do much when you cant even find the resources or space to help in any way, especially in the face of such misguided hate!

Luth is the most useless hospital in Nigeria and the world. I also lost a friend's mother there few years ago due to negligence. Those doctor got no heart, no emotions. Most of the senior doctors allow student doctors to experiment on sick people that needs urgent attention, whereas animal never finish for busy for their experiment. They are only after the money, once someone dies, they urgently take the copse to the mortuary. After my friend's family deposited the needed amount for the operation, those doctor still did not attend to the dying woman on time, and when she lost the battle, i urge my friend to go get their money back, and they followed my advice and went for the money, and we got it back. i urge them to sue the hospital also and they refused. If it had happen to my family directly i would have take it upon myself to sue them in a competent court of law. Useless hospital.
