So until now, the country wasn't monitoring seismic activities and movement?

This is quite shameful.
Its indeed shameful, this was exactly the same thing on my mind. The fact that in 2018, we still aren't proactive enough in quite a number of basic areas for citizen protection baffles me. If things had gotten more serious than this, Nigeria would have been caught unprepared.

Never proactive but very reactive Govt.

Of course we were caught unprepared.

For the government to wait a whole 51 hours to react and caution citizens about the said incidence is really worrisome.

Hahahaha...Nigeria my country, the biggest joke amongst the comity of nations. What a shame.

And one brother like that on a related thread was trying to be clever with me by half, reeling out big sounding words and supposed acronyms for agencies saddled with such responsibilities not knowing they were empty edifices where rogues are congregated in the guise of carrying out some professional job.

He was even telling me they had a standard operational procedure. SOP indeed.

I wonder where the quickly purchased the types of equipment from within 72 hours (hopefully not fro Alaba Market or a guise to embezzle some money) and when they'll get operational.

Bufoons

Enjoy my siggy
Truth is between 3-6 months after this scare, they will all go back to being incompetent and continue playing Candy Crush and Solitaire in their offices. There will be no continuity in monitoring or proper research carried out - they will probably even falsify reports that won't be accessible to the general public.
Sad!

These guys are just giving out generic causes of the tremors. I've been expecting to read comments from the FIELD GEOLOGISTS

If there are faults, what are their names? which formation is hosting them? what's their age? any lateral equivalence in nearby states? These and many more are questions that needs to be answered. Buying a siesomogram is not the issue, these problem manning the equipment and paying the personnel who are likely supposed to be residing at the base stations.

If you apply as a geologist now to FEMA one m0ron will ask if you've PhD
You are so right!

Because it hit the FCtmT first right. They were quick to cough out 50m for such equipment. If it had happened someplace else, the FG won't even lift a finger

If the country isn't along any known fault lines, it isn't necessary.
The Abuja incident was caused by UNREGULATED quarrying.
There is a lot of stone mining in Abuja, with explosives being used in underground caves.
It is the same as illegal sand mining or dredging in the south causing gully erosions.
It's like purchasing Hurricane minioting equipment.
The purchase is a waste of N50m.
Mining should be regulated properly.

After reading this write up, I don't know how this man ended up in this position. Am a Geologist by profession, we should not mistake a tremor with an earthquake. The Sub-saharan African plate have been quite for about 1.5 million years that does not mean that a movement can not occur at any given time. Lets localize this present experience that is taking place right now in Abuja. Abuja, is located around the Granite belt and a lot of blasting activities takes place over there. This blasting which is man made can cause seismic waves to the subsurface there by causing Fault movement in a sinusoidal direction. That I believe is what is causing the tremor taking place. The only earth monitoring equipment found in Nigeria is about 50 years old at the University of Ibadan.

Hehe, dude just read a few Wikipedia article n using it to cajole the media. Fortunately for us, we don't fall in the earthquake zone. Also, you don't just buy 6 equipments for the purpose of satisfying Federal character cheesy. Our people be like, let us buy 6 machines, one for each geopolitical zones so there won't be screams of marginalizations.

Unfortunately, we can only make guesses on the actual cause. That old man is lieing tho. How come they were able to buy equipments just within two days, did they just take a stroll down to Alana market?

On the contrary tho, geologists are not the only people who can monitor earthquakes. civil engineers n geophysists can, and employing a PhD holder with foreign training is the best for stuffs like this.

I think it's a waste of funds cause Nigeria is not under any threat of experiencing an earth quake. They only need to stop blasting rocks in or around residential areas
