Why not release it back into the wild? Why not educate the fishermen and upriver residents about the manatee being an endangered species? Instead he is talking about boosting tourism of Lagos by having it in a zoo....that's a definite death sentence for the manatee.

Nice one from Lagos state government. It's not every animal that should serve as food. We should learn to conserve animal and give back to nature

There are 3 species of manatee, 2 of which live in fresh water in West Africa and the Amazon and
the third in coastal waters of the tropical Atlantic Ocean.

We don't have any conservative culture in Nigeria, especially where i come from, Benue where you can't find an antelope or a monkey. We only see them in books and tv.

The owner of the trap should be handsomely compensated. The government must not benefit from this without adequate compensation, failing which future discoveries will not be reported again.

I guess the fisherman is quite altruistic and enlightened to consider preservation of an endangered specie.
He placed less importance to the amount of money he would have made and the meat he would have provided for his family.

I suggest government should pay him the value of the beast as compensation.

I was going to say that, do we have facilities to care for such animal?? I think not.. The best thing to do is simply get a vet, do a health check and send it back to sea..

Kudos to the fisherman and rescue team, you hardly hear such good news, I was expecting to see manetee stewing in a pot already; thank God I was disappointed..
our bellies are d most sophisticated facilities 4 keeping such animals
