Royal FrieslandCampina has announced plans to invest €23 million in local milk production, as part of its Dairy Development Programme (DDP) in Nigeria, the company’s Global Chief Executive Officer, Hein Schumacher, has said.Schumacher stated at the weekend in Abuja, while he led FrieslandCampina delegation on a courtesy visit to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, at the Presidential Villa.

The delegation included the President, Consumer Dairy, Royal FrieslandCampina, The Netherlands, Roel van Neerbos; Managing Director, FrieslandCampina WAMCO Nigeria, Ben Langat; Netherlands Ambassador to Nigeria, Robert Petri; Chairman, FrieslandCampina WAMCO Nigeria, Jacobs Ajekigbe; and Corporate Affairs Director, FrieslandCampina WAMCO, Ore Famurewa.


Commending FrieslandCampina WAMCO for initiating the DDP, and thus encouraging other investors to do backward integration in the sector, Osinbajo reiterated the need to develop a robust plan to improve local production across the country.

He said: “The plan of extending the dairy development programme to other states is extremely important. I think that backward integration is crucial. My worry is the lack of incentives for backward integration.”The Vice President however assured the company of the Federal Government’s readiness to support it to actualise set business objectives, while urging for better synergy between the public and private sectors.

Speaking to journalists at the State House afterwards, Schumacher explained: “The Vice President asked us to continue to invest in local dairy farming to increase local production of milk, and we are fully aligned with his request. We will take forward the programmes we have been running and expand them.”“We are investing around €23 million in our evaporated milk and ready-to-drink milk factory in order to provide fresh milk for the Nigerian consumer.
FrieslandCampina WAMCO has been successful with dairy development in recent years and milk yield is improving,” Schumacher said.Highlighting the milestones of FrieslandCampina WAMCO’s DDP, Langat revealed: “four model farms with crossbreed cows have been established to improve local milk collection across its five milk collection centres. Our Company is fully committed to working with local farmers to grow local milk production and ultimately ensure that Nigerians continue to benefit from the nutritious content of milk.”
He added, “Working with 3,500 dairy farmers in over 90 farming communities in Oyo State, we are already providing the required knowledge transfer and sustainable livelihoods for communities. We plan to transform additional 500 pastoralists to settled dairy farmers under the DDP model. Already over 100,000 people have been positively impacted around these communities.”

Producing milk is not a basic thing. Dairy farming is an expensive venture yet lucrative and has a LONG gestation period. Additionally, producing milk using Fulani or local cow breed is tantamount to doing nothing. In this business, you cannot compete using a cow that produces a litre of milk daily against the Dutch whose cows produce an average of 30-45 litres per cow daily.

Dairy farming is expensive and is not basic.

Our politicians cursed us and we also cursed ourselves by allowing them to play us like kalo kalo, they prefer we wallow in poverty so that we can look up to them as our saviours, abeg wetin dey new for milk production wey we no fit setup milk villages equipped with processing and storage facilities even local govt agencies can be setup to run it as a profitable venture, looking at Friesland and Arla dairy companies they started as co-operatives

They should form a cooperative society. That's how the majority of dairy companies operate - cooperative societies. Dairy farmers coming together for the same aim. It's hard to have a single individual delve into dairy farming without strong financial backing.

Soooo dependent on foreigners....they already have a working model.... but we can't learn from that to ome up with a robust plan to expand it nationwide.... we have to depend on foreigners.....and are encouraging them to attract other investors. ....while the FG is ready and willing to do whatever is possible for them to actualise their objectives.. What does that mean?...giving them choice lands?...Why can't the FG bend backwards to encourage locals to set up same farms? Let us sit back and encourage foreigners to come and do everything for us....for sure...the country will move forward but the citizens backwards.....a dependent state.

Agreed co-operatives is the way to go, but Govt has big business in business! That's how China did it they help establish funding support for businesses with clear guidelines on best practices and zero room for corruption or embezzlement,

I can confirm that the states in southern Nigeria holds the key to diary related business. Check the all year round green grass,the cool and not -so-hot weather the army of educated heads, ters,that are there to drive the game. We have spoilt every good idea with politics of acrimony by tagging anything cow "Fulani" without reasoning.we have burnt bridges with our tribal stupidity that to cross_coperate becomes suicidal.
The greatest setback is the uninformed people in power as governors ,ministers,commissioners ,advisers.They will prefer to build 20 biodigesters in 20 LGAs then begin the planning of the source of raw material two years later.They will buy farm inputs and share it among themselves only to dump them at a corner of their garage to root away.
This country is a big failure run by dictators at all levels.
