Kia/Hundai G4LA engine 1.2liter

Vehicle Came in with the following symptoms .

* A mild rattle

* Mild Bluish white smoke.

* Misfire

* Unstable Idle.

* Hard start.

Service History. Owner services religiously with full synthetic 5w30 oils at 7,000km intervals.

Engine has Had no issues for over 2years. Engine is still stock.

Uses tap water instead of coolant.

Test conducted Checks.

Compression test over all cylinders shows lower than expected compression on Cylinder 2 and 4.

Spark plugs darker in cylinders 2 and 4.

Problem happened when owners driver took car out for a long inter state Drive and claimed "vehicle just lost power on its own"

Fuel injectors where cleaned by a road side mechanic and vehicle has been rattling and smoking ever since.

Oil Drained and no metal particles at the base.

Sadly we don't Believe that story.

Tearing Down the engine to see why there's smoke and rattling.

separating the Block and the head so far every thing looks fine, apart from the brown muddy looking coolant so far nothing out of place

Quick way to check for leaking valves, remove the camshafts and pour fuel over the valves with the cylinder turned upside down.

Look inside the intake and exhaust ends of the valve stem area and if there a leak you should see fuel dripping.

So far no leaks.

all connecting rod bearings Sharp with no wear or markings.

No play between connecting rod and piston.

Only noticeable wear is in piston rings.

It is piston slap. The cylinder walls have been worn, and the pistons protective coating is worn.
Only option is to rebore/ replace short block and pistons.

Typical of some Hyundai engines. Quite sad too.

What's the mileage on this engine? Was it bought brand new?

Quite sad the sleeve is worn. The engine is really clean.

It is a very common issue with Hyundai/KIA engines manufactured between 2009 to 2013 (G4KD, G4kE ,nu engines, gamma engines etc.). it is not so bad here due to our kind of climate (tropical) as initial engine start temperature in frigid zones can accelerate the problem.

This problem has been attributed to many factors, short piston length, metal debris left within engine after engine manufacture which will also affect crankshaft, quick wearing of piston wrist pins, quick wearing of coating on piston, etc,etc.

Only solution is to replace short block(rare)+ pistons, re-bore block( as blocks is already ovalized)and replace pistons or replace engine.

for those having vehicles with such engines, best bet is to let your vehicle warm up from cold start for at leat 2 minutes before drive off. this can mitigate the issue to a degree.

whether you change your oil every 1000 km does not matter. on such defective engines from factory, this is bound to happen.

So much for Korean build quality (food for Toyota zombies grin )

Does this issue also affect beta engines that ships with US spec hyundai elantra of 2001 to 2009?

My 2008 elantra comes with the gamma 1.6 engine .. Could it also be affected?

Another kettle of fish grin grin grin

But to be fair, the 2AZ engine was not bad( like that), especially those produced from 2004 to 2005.(2001-03 stripped head bolts and intake manifold rattle, 2006 to 2009/10 defective piston rings, all which could be easily repaired without replacing engine block cool).

I once read of a 2005 toyota camry that raked in over 500,000 miles using the 2AZ engine shocked shocked shocked

The problem we have in this country is we do not have good maintenance culture. I would rather buy a 300,000 mile 2007 Lexus ES350 from the US than to purchase a 'bought brand new' 2012 Toyota Camry xle v6 with less than 50000 km in Nigeria. If you know u know grin

Comparing it to these (defective) hyundai engines, i would settle in fair and square for the 2AZ.

this 1.2liter engine is currently about 450k, while the 1.6liter (Dana spec) is 550-600k now.

Currently negotiating for a half engine for this problem.

re-bore, option would have been nice, but I don't trust The machine shops (Oga Turner), There was a time I took a block for a re-bore job the block was cut, but unknown to me, the diameter of the top section of one of the bores was cut larger at the bottom, than at the top and engine was still smoking after the job cry lost faith in the re-bore process here in naija. Also the new size pistons will take more than 6-10 working days to find and ship.
