To succeed in IT, you can learn all you need outside the university. Most computer science curriculum are far from what the industry demands

In my opinion just do a course that makes you very good with numbers, whatever you need to learn in IT, you can learn outside uni

Just like Raumdeuter has said, you can learn anything outside a university. Infact Nigerian CS curriculum is very very weak grin

most of the senior developers i know of didn't study Computer Science, one even studied Psychology and she's one of the 3 Google Developers Expert we have in Nigeria. She learnt mostly online, infact she did the Udacity nanodegree.

If you're planning to take a CS degree outside naija, go ahead brother. But if na naija, considering you already have an Optometry degree, baba na big waste of time grin Because last last, you would mostly have to learn outside the classroom.

You will spend several semesters learning about history of computer, History of internet, history of abacus. Then some programming language used in the 70s if fortunate the ones used in the 90s

Will you get a job where they will be asking you for history of computers at the interview? or history of the internet

Eden Hazard Chelsea career highlights: Chelsea sign a new manager, Hazard
has the form of his life. Following season Eden Hazard struggles, Chelsea sack
manager. Chelsea hire a new manager, Hazard again regains his prolific
form. Struggles the following season Rinse, repeat

I beg to differ..

You said you left school in 2004,
Who told you Computer Science is still history of computers?

Things have changed sir, CS is now one of the best courses you can go for currently.

I didn't wanted to join the conversation before, but I just can't overlook this one..

I'm not saying the curriculum is very good. Nigeria curriculum is weak generally but CS has passed history of computer

Sarri gave too much respect to Liverpool.
I don't think there is anything special about Liverpool.

We need to start shopping for RB too..I think azpilicueta is really getting old to be playing 2games a week like he used too.. we need to rest him like alonso for not so important games. He didn't have a bad game yesterday though.

Some players just have to go this January and get players that can fit into sarri style..
Kepa has to stay though... Looks like he is gonna come out good. Atleast he fits into sarri system with his pass distributions.

Not many keepers can save that goal.. he might be expensive, but he is still human.

My observation too.

Is there anything you learn in CS nowadays that cannot be taught at NIIT, New Horizon or APTech?

YES!
NIIT and co mostly teach you how to program.

Programming is different from Computer Science..

There are some basic things I know as a computer scientist that an ordinary programmer would lack..

For example, a programmer is just interested in writing codes and developing software, but I know the logic of how the software runs on the computer. I know how to interact with the memory. I write efficient programs that takes reduced complexity just because of my knowledge of writing good algorithms..

An NIIt guy will most likely know how to write programs better than us but software engineering methodologies will help you engineer and manage your software easily for scalability, maintainability... and so, not just writing codes.

Also the numerics and statistical aspect, we do theory. My computing skills is far more better than the NIIT guy.
Science is different from practical.

Learning IT outside is also very good, I'll advice anyone who isn't in school yet to go for a 6 months - 1 yr IT skill in NIIT.

Aptech and co are trying but that 4 yes degree is not comparable at all atall.

When you get to the university as a computer science student, the first thing they will tell you is the difference between you and a NIIT student.
"Why not go for a 1yr program and become skilled and start earning than waste your 4 yrs here writing exam and battling with strike?"
That's what they will ask you and you will get a full satisfactory answer.

Thanks.

We have knowledge of computer networks, but we are not better than those that learn it outside even though we understand the operating system.

They don't teach us networking and comma fully as they would do outside make I no lie.

But who want to take computer networking as a full career? I prefer computer engineering self.

I don't agree, there are some courses that are useful, the practical aspect is useless yes but the theory is very useful

Get a university degree, if u have chance and money run some IT programs on the side

I studied economics but today I'm a web developer, 80% of the things I know I learnt on YouTube, 15% at niit and the rest by chance, I still know in my heart that there are many basics that I will never know because I didn't study computer science, my guy that did operates faster than me, I even know more than him but because of his background knowledge he knows how to build Bridges

For instance if I design an app for a company, they will ask if it can work on both phones and tablet, I will explain that it's made for phones but it can work on tablets, just that the graphics will be poor and the orientation wouldn't change, they will ask me to fix it and I will have to start again and make a new app but my friend will know how to fix it that is just 1 example

wrong, programming is part of what you are taught in computer science, na wa oooo, so no one corrected you, they teach them coding, just that it's mostly outdated languages but the basic principles of programing are taught in computer science, even networking to an extent is taught, computer science is everything computer, every single thing, they will teach you

If you really want to learn anything, be ready to spend data on YouTube and I swear there is nothing in this life that you can't do, YouTube is very powerful

Instead of wasting money at niit buy a laptop with a good battery, get the softwares you want to learn and learn how to use them on YouTube, some videos last 11hrs, I even have a software that makes the YouTube video float on your desktop while you are doing what the video says on the app

if I hear, computer science is like someone giving you a market and telling you that it's yours, niit is someone asking to pick 1 thing from their market, computer science is the full dose at once, me that went to niit gained only 15% of my computer knowledge there

you're sick grin

Actually the CS curriculum has changed o....but I think private schools have the best ones and it's evident in the start-up ecosystem. Dem CU and Babcock grads are really pulling waves in the tech ecosystem.

I think Ife has a nice curriculum too, in our 2nd year, even as we weren't studying Computer Science, they still taught we science folks Java. It was a 3 unit course.

A Nigerian CS degree is actually not bad(depends on school though) as long as you're taking it as a first degree, not like the case of Unlimited22

You can be a great software engineer by just going to Andela. The head backend developer at findworka never took a University course.

The web is the best university you can get now. Thank God for the likes of Udacity that offer nanodegrees, it's better than going to one University in Lafia to waste 4yrs.
