grin grin grin lols at their fingers are frozen, that may be so. I was quite discouraged by that too. Hardly any info on Manitoba on any forum i search.

Thank you for sharing, please keep doing this, I really need the motivation.

It would be nice to see pictures too, please don't call me Oliver Twist o grin , would just really love to hear and see more.

PS, loving the Yoruba speaking fun fact grin

There's a lot of info on Calgary on this thread, but I'm sure someone will still step forward to provide you feedback.

People in Manitoba hardly give any feedback. There's very little info on Winnipeg/Manitoba online (not only on this thread). My theory is that their fingers are frozen or they are too busy shoveling snow. They usually share info before arriving, then they share landing gist. After that they disappear.

Or when they leave Manitoba for one reason or the other they become active again.

You could do a search of the thread. But start from Page 113, GS put some links on life in Calgary and Winnipeg.

I posted majority of this about 2 months ago, I am just adding a little more;

I live in Winnipeg and it is a decent city. I have been here for a few months so my info may not be absolute.

There are jobs everywhere in Canada and including Manitoba. A search on indeed, workopolis or LinkedIn will give u a good view once u input d city and career area of choice. Although I will say for every 1 job in Manitoba and all the other provinces u have 9-10 in Ontario, 5-6 in Alberta & Quebec, 4-5 in BC. I am saying this from my job search experience but I stand to b corrected. Manitoba and Nova Scotia have more jobs than New Brunswick and slightly more than Saskatchewan.

Life is relatively cheap in Winnipeg compared to most Canadian cities especially housing except for Montreal and Halifax. Government also gives a bit of support to families and if u want u also have food banks and other free stuffs in some places across the city.

There a lot of Nigerians in Manitoba. In my opinion 70-80% of them are into healthcare support jobs, abt 7-10% of them are into customer service jobs, security or other survival jobs, the remaining percentage u find in white collar I believe. Based on this most Nigerians u meet immediately preach the majority jobs to u. I do not blame any1, to each his/her own. To get the healthcare jobs u only need some basic certificates u can get upon payment, no exams.

For the white collar jobs, all u need is do ur search well, highlight ur soft skills and experience, be ready to weather d storms if necessary, finally let God have His way.

1 reason why a lot of people also take some of this survival jobs here in my opinion is discrimination. I may be wrong but when u work in the survival jobs the culture is more immigrant friendly as u have lots of immigrants working with u and it is easier to blend in compared to a much more Canadian environment which is more common in white collars where u have to prove urself over & over ,u are also more careful & uptight (U can imagine this by thinking of working with only white people for 100days without seeing more than 2-3 blacks come your way during work & hearing no other language than English).

With determination, focus and sharpening ur skills u will get white collar and in no time get used to the Canadian culture if u so desire and willing to pay the price.

Winnipeg is quite hot in the summer and extremely cold in Winter, the farther north u go the more extreme the temperature especially the cold.

Housing range is $850-1300 for 1-2 bedroom apt.
Monthly Bus pass is $100 for unlimited bus ride across Winnipeg.
Cost of grocery for a family of 4 is between $250 -400.
Car insurance $105- 180 depending on the car
Gas for car $50-100 depending on ur commute
Parking-$50
Phone -$50
Internet- $60
Daycare- $400- 500/ month

My family doctor is a nice Nigerian who has been here for a while.

As @headstone mentioned a lot of Naijas live around Pembina/ University of Manitoba so also around St Mary/St Vital/ Waverly/Downtown. U have rarely hear of crime in all these areas I mentioned except for downtown.

Churches are a way of connecting back to your Nigerian roots in Winnipeg if u so wish, also notes that it comes with the Nigerian way of doing things.

Winnipeg is also gradually waking up to its city status in my opinion as well

boss help me with your contact I will like to discuss very important stuff with you

Hi Guys,

I am trying to apply for the Member-in-Training at APEGA before I land in Canada.

I realise I need an ICAP report from WES, however, I only assessed my Master's qualification during the immigration exercise.

Will I need to assess my BSc with WES in order for it to be included i the ICAP report that APEGA requires?

I also need response to this. I finished all 17 modules within three days. What's the possibility of getting job in Canada with the certificate upon landing?

I want to increase my chances of getting job within 1 month of landing

Please did you use your UCI number only or with COPR to attend the courses?
I have the new UCI but still waiting for my PPR, will I be allowed to attend the courses? I need something to be doing to keep busy

You should PM @TEECANN. I think he was considering conversion at some point. Also email CPA for clarity

@rainazoe

Yes, I began processing the CPA Ontario's Internationally Trained Accountants' (ITA) path registration.

I quickly realized that my ICAN ACA amounts to little in the conversion process as I was expected to practically challenge most of the papers in the CPA Ontario exams all over (Biko, not at this ol' age again grin) so I kind of abandon the process (the painful part was all the kish I had expended to get registered)

But recently, I have found a way around the matter through CIMA, so I won't have to write CPA Ontario papers again, I'll just apply using CIMA for direct CPA membership through the MRA (mutual recognition agreement) CIMA has with CPA Ontario. Se fini grin

However, the caveat is that from registering for CIMA(using ICAN) to using CIMA to register for CPA Ontario's membership, I will cost around 700k naira (yes, almost a million naira). IMHO, I still prefer to spend it than re-writing those papers.

Another caveat, as an immigrant, you have to sort out your membership of CIMA before stepping foot in Canada, if you start the process of taking CIMA exams or converting your ICAN to CIMA after landing, they wont accept it (It's on CPA Ontario website)

These stuffs are long and windy but it with diligent research and prompt action, they are doable.

It will end in praise IJN!

Good day, my hubby is an engineer and we are presently processing EE. He has applied for WES though, do we need to upgrade to WES ICAP now seeing that he will need a course by course evaluation in order to practice engineering in Canada. At the monent we are still yet to get the ECA.

You would be able to attend the course with just your UCI and probably evidence of Med passed. At least that's what wifey used way back in March or so.

Your UCI with any other document showing you're awaiting ppr will suffice. I added my AOR letter.
I've completed the advance course.

Hopefully, ICAN will conclude the MRA with CPA Canada very soon. I heard this from the ICAN President himself at a forum some weeks back in Abuja where he mentioned that he just came back from Canada a few days earlier to tidy up the MRA with CPA. He also said the MRAs is at an advanced stage. He also spoke about the conclusion of MRA with ICAEW, which was circulated to members a few days later. I also read sometimes early this year where CPA Canada President or a representative( can't vividly remember) mentioned that if they conclude with ICAN, members will be granted same priveledges given to ACCA members. We pray that this happens faster than we anticipate. I personally have decided to wait and see how this pans out.

Just seeing this and it made my day(lolsided). Their fingers are not frozen from snow shovelling. Once people identify you are from Manitoba, you are in trouble. They will start bombarding you with request for their provincial nominee requirement. The one that has to do with family and friends sponsorship so people living there hide themselves.

Hi, kindly confirm from CPA if you can use CIMA obtained through MRA to obtain CPA membership.

My colleague had wanted to use this medium but on enquiry to CPA, he was told the CIMA won't fly because of certain reasons.

please confirm before you waste your money.. even on CPA Ontario website, you'll see information about completing the whole CIMA qualification in order to be eligible (check no 2 of eligibility criteria) .

Those who converted ICAN to ACCA, then to CPA are able to do so because CPA only requires ACCA members to have completed the professional level exams which ICAN members do during conversion to ACCA... You can't convert your CIMA to CPA with all papers exempted. .

or if you have a contrary information gotten from CPA, please let me know... Thank you

You may have your specific reason for making Mississauga or Brampton a priority, Have you ever thought of living in North York, East york, Etobicoke and Scarborough to mention but a few.. these places all makes up the GTAs and they have the same Transit that transverses the whole areas and they are all some minutes away from Toronto downtown( call it the heart of Canada, you may never be wrong!).

Having said that, I can't categorically say, I will assume the Mississauga transit is more efficient as regards time intervals, they both have same prices for bus tickets on a single way trip and I should also think houses in Brampton are on the average cheaper than Mississauga.

Thanks a lot. I’m specifically considering Brampton or Mississauga cos I just want to be close enough to Toronto asper big city, more opportunities advantage..Atleast for now. I feel like it’s a good place to start. Oh well, I’ll keep researching and make up my mind soon enough. Thanks again

Thank you @PresVA,

Lovely thoughts there.

I'll check out the "eligibility criterium 2" again.

Meanwhile, I see serious "sense" in the bold part above regarding using an "all-paper exempted" CIMA for conversion. One should enquire widely really.

Thanks for this info though I heard a similar jist too in passing, but didnt believe it...[s]as with every other "to do" checklist from our leaders and institutions[/s] grin grin

If it's really true and it pans out on time, I'll probably wait too but I only hope this funny "10-year recency rule" requirement of ones ICAN exams will not be applicable in a conversion situation with CPA.

It is one of the pre arrival online courses. There are many of them ,you choose the one most suitable for your career.

We went early for the biometrics ( we didn't book appointment). We were there before 6.30am and waited till 8.00am(opening time). The people i met there were less than 100 for different stuff. About 20-25 people came for biometrics. I left before 9.00am.

Hi everyone,

Just got my ppr and would be submitting passports during the week. I know it’s only 396 pages but it’ll be nice to have a summary or most important things to note for anyone with active plans to relocate to Canada. I already noted the Driver’s license letter and tips for getting a job but I know there’s more

Thanks!

If you are referring to the FPHRC course, you can use your UCI no alone and upload your AOR letter as evidence. That's what I did and I completed the course in August. The lady at the Canada orientation session (IOM) said I didn't need COPR.
