Disappointment for workers as FG reportedly releases new minimum wage figure
Author: Kess Ewubare

- The organised labour and organised private sector reportedly recommend N30,000 as minimum wage per month

- Ayuba Wabba, the president of the Nigerian Labour Congress, says the federal government will soon announce the new minimum wage as the tripartite committee completes its assignment

- The SGF, Boss Mustapha, says the federal government will address the agitation for an increase in the minimum wage

The federal government’s stance that it cannot afford more than N25,000 per month as minimum wage has reportedly stalled the negotiations by the tripartite committee on a new national minimum wage.

Vanguard has reported that the organised labour and Organised Private Sector (OPS) have faulted the figured by the federal government and are insisting on N30,000 minimum wage per month.

The newspaper stated that the federal government had earlier presented N21, 700 per month as new minimum wage to the other social partners when the tripartite committee resumed sitting on Thursday, October 4.

But displeased by the federal government’s figure amidst the high cost of living in the country, the organised labour and OPS reportedly reached an accord, increasing their earlier figure of N25,000 to N40,000.

Meanwhile, Ayuba Wabba, Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) president, on Monday, October 8, said the federal government will soon announce the new minimum wage as the tripartite committee completes its assignment for onward submission to President Muhammadu Buhari.

According to him, the committee reconvened and deliberated on a new minimum wage figure that was acceptable to all employers of labour in the country.

Wabba said the presidency would make it public after deliberation by the National Economic Council (NEC) meeting.

In a related report, the federal government says it will soon address the agitation for the upward review of the national minimum wage in a manner that will make workers and all Nigerians smile.

The disclosure was made by the secretary to the government of the federation, Boss Mustapha, on Sunday, October 7, at the 22nd choir anniversary of the Christ Apostolic Church, Living Water DCC Headquarters, Abuja, Punch reports.

NAIJ.com gathers that the SGF, who was represented by the permanent secretary (General Services Office), Office of the SGF, Olusegun Adekunle, said the present administration was sensitive to the plight and wishes of the masses.

Let's hope they can meet up with even the 30k and help the poor workers lives some even though I personally rate 80% of the Nigerian civil servants as unproductive and a huge dent on the nation's coffers. You'd need to visit government offices to get an idea.

N30k is still a reasonable amount.

The question is, can all states pay this new minimum wage?

The answer is "Yes, they can if they want to".

We need to re-prioritize our needs in Nigeria. What do we need 2 Assemblies (Senate and HOR) for, especially with the humongous salary and allowance they get paid monthly?

We need to find a way to cut down on these wasteful spending if the ordinary man must live and live decent.

If you take out time to go through my posts here you'd see how I think the NA with their humongous allowances are state enemies number one.

That said, I hope you aren't trying to refute my claims on the majority of Nigerian civil service?
