If you have any tips on how you dealt with that challenge or general advice for newbies on how to detect scammer please don't hoard it, someone might need it.

If you would like to expose certain people please do so with concrete proof so you don't tarnish a person's image.
Writers can also verify a client here before taking a job



MY FORMER QUESTION:


I wonder if it is wrong to ask for payments(at least half of it) before accepting a writing job or what other means do you know of to detect scammers. It seems like they are increasing by the day, people who offer you a gig, accept your work and when it's time to pay they go dumb. Have you been scammed before? How did you deal with it and how are you preventing it now?

Its not every one who outsource writing works out is a scam, the same way its not every writer that claims being scammed is justified. What I personally do I request for proof that the client rejected my work, if you have no proof, then its a scam. Same thing I do for those I outsource to. There are situations where claims by nairaland writers are not always the whole truth

Those ones, na God go judge them. Took me threatening to report one to my grandmother before he replied n paid my money

There is one I am dealing with at the moment.... Since Saturday,I delivered.... Now it's time for payment he's talking about exchanger issues. I ll be patient for a couple of days sha and see....

Do not write for anyone who chats you up out of the blues.
Before responding to an ad, check up on the op's previous posts and comments, if something fishy comes up, let go.
If he or she is offering an unusually high rate, ask for his personal details and pictures especially if he is chatting you up himself.
If he is chatting you up outta free will and his rate is average, ask for his nairaland moniker, check it out before accepting

How about everything in one, so one thread doesn't drag behind another. Something like a thread were you post the person's number and job info and people tell you if its likely scam or real, then if you've been scammed you inform us of the person with proof. Like a confirmation and exposure thread.

I need a writer. eCommerce blog.

I was scammed for two stressful to write articles. I published them on my blog immediately and shared the link on Facebook. Still looking to publish them on medium. They became plagiarized content. I think the client got to know and contacted me with a different phone number to carry out his revenge plan because this time around it was a book that I did till day break and till evening the next day and that he left with me saying he had already done them. I was lucky I told him that I misplaced the work and was starting afresh. He left the book with me. I am hoping to publish it in an academic research website where readers would pay to read it (it was nonfiction). Now I noticed the similarities in the language of the two people and by default I will not do your work if you use those words. Although my assistant blocked the client on our Watsapp line without my knowledge. He is just telling me that yesterday when I expressed surprise at not hearing from that client. You have to be smart. They may not agree to pay you upfront but don't give them the full work (in its entire quality) until you are paid in full. #justsaying.

This is serious. Yours is even a child's play when compared to my last experience writing a 75k worded eBook for a Nairaland client... Sadly, I had to abandon and overlook some other projects I was doing then.. The useless guy still had the effrontery to contact me with a different number that he wanted me to write another 45k eBook for him.. Guess what I did, I accepted the work but did not even open the file till the client couldn't hold up any more and had to cancel the offer. It still beats me how someone in their right senses will swindle another hustler of his/her hard earned money. What happened to the supposed dignity with labor? Guess, the preacher who wrote the epistle about the "heart of men been desperately wicked" foresaw a whole lot in his lifetime..

Seriously. I've passed through a lot from some bad guys. When I'm Starting out, I met some bad client that gave me 20k words to write on. He absconded with my work and money.
Another person chatted me from the blue to quickly write a job to pay 5k, he did same thing by scamming me.
So many dishonest people here. You got be careful .

1. Don't accept an offer from a person that quickly chat you up from the blues without knowing them, say they pay commitment fee.
2. Don't agree to write large projects without commitments, it will be disastrous at the end most times.
3. Don't be greedy to accept job from anyone you don't know with short deadlines.

Though I am not a writer but I feel your pain of working so hard but not getting paid!
Nice proposal, but in addition also run some background check on the clients Monika and check for when the account was created and comments about the client from other Nairalanders.

New accounts are more likely to scam than older accounts.

Also ask clients to state their name in full at the beginning of your conversation then at the end of the negotiation ask for the clients Government issued Valid ID. Run background check on the clients email before sending the job if you have any doubt.

For those who have been scammed, it is painful but please post the Monika, phone number, ID and email of the scammer that way others who carry out background checks won't fall victim.
