First of all, I think you try resetting the SMC

Well, if it doesn't work After replacing the SMC.
Then the problem may be:

1. A Pinched Inverter Cable

2. An aging/Failing Inverter

3. An aging/failing backlight lamp

4. (Really, really rare, so rare that I wouldn't take in account): Aging capacitors on the Logic Board

Usually, in a pinch, changing 1-2 fixes the whole mess.

Naturally, Google Chrome isn't optimized for Mac OS, so it consumes a lot of ram and battery juice. You opening 10 tabs means you putting x10 pressure on it and that means gnat you ram consumption will be multipled by 10
