Temi Banjo recently wanted to purchase a new laptop. His first instincts was to log into the internet on his smartphone to find a deal on a popular ecommerce store. After a few minutes of browsing through the product listings, Temi ordered a brand new PC which was dropped off at his apartment three days later.

Temi isn’t different from the typical African who shops daily on various platforms.

Online shopping in Africa has progressed with time, with more products selling off various e-stores. E-shopping is becoming widely used as compared to shopping from a physical store.

With over 65% of Africans shopping online — thanks to internet access — and over $100m being transacted annually (as reported by Jumia’s financial report) the industry would undoubtedly boost Africa's economy. In fact, McKinsey & Company reported that online shopping would account for a 10% increase in Africa's retail sales by 2025.

With the freedom of the internet, you can also share in the prospects of ecommerce with the following tips.

Participate in Surveys

Surveys are becoming increasingly popular because they allow you earn points based on how you review a particular product or user experience.

Some review sites such as Triaba and Mobrog offer money. Others give points that can be used to shop on specific online shops, and this doesn’t just let you earn some pay, it gives you a first experience on possible trends, and insight on how to maximise ecommerce opportunities.

Work as a consultant

Jumia is reputed to be the largest ecommerce store in Africa, and with programs such as Jumia’s J-force, you can be an independent sales consultant. Become an affiliate

Affiliate programs are a great option. With Affiliate programs, you get to earn commissions based on specific tasks. Most affiliate programs would have you promote a particular product on social media platforms while others would require other some more direct forms of marketing.

Purchase products with PLR (private label rights) is a licence that allow you to purchase a product, and resell it as yours. Some products don’t require a PLR before they can be resold, and PLR’s isn’t limited to ecommerce, but you can utilise this to create more income with ecommerce.
