The Prince of Wales and heir to the British throne, Charles and his wife, the Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, have arrived in Abuja. The royals were welcomed by dignitaries at the airport as Prince Charles inspected the Guard of Honor. 

Upon arrival, the Prince of Wales and his wife will be welcomed by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa.

During their visit to Nigeria, the Royal Highnesses will undertake a series of engagements in Abuja and Lagos.

They will meet with some of Nigeria’s dynamic youth as well as traditional leaders, the business community, the armed forces, and people from the arts, fashion and charitable sector.

The visit will highlight key themes in both nations’ relationship, including the importance of Commonwealth ties, youth opportunity, business and entrepreneurship, educating of women and girls, and defence co-operation, among other issues.

This is the third time the Prince of Wales will be visiting the country, his previous visits were in 1990, 1999 and 2006, while it will be the Duchess of Cornwall’s first visit to Nigeria.

Nigeria became a British protectorate in 1901. Colonization lasted until 1960, so they were in charge for about 59 years, during which they built schools, roads, rails, institutions. Granted they had been subduing different parts of Nigeria for decades before, and they were not benevolent.

Africans have been in charge of Nigeria since 1960 until 2018, for about 58 years, and really haven't made much progress since 1960. Africans were also in charge of Nigeria before the British, and for the most part brutally subjugated their own people for centuries with plenty of wars and death (Benin, Oyo, Kanem-Borno, and Sokoto come to mind).

At some point, Africans need to realize the futility in blaming others and take responsibility for their own fate: we can continue to blame others for joining a bunch of us into countries, or we can decide to build an exceptional society.
