The criminal liars in APC should understand that they would need more lies to cover up initial lies they told us about rice production

criminal. did you even read this post to understand that its just somebody's projections based on prevailing circumstances? Demand for local rice has increased by 5%, flood, insecurity etc has affected output this year and therefore there is likelihood importation will increase next year. Not that the government has not increased production. Try and help yourself by being rational.

Damn so much dumbness on nairaland these days. Government never claimed that Nigeria is self sufficient when it comes to rice production hence there will still be imports as local production cannot meet demand yet. Even reading the article, there has been an increase in demand for rice..

Government is not in the business of rice prodction, they only put.in place policies and initiatives to support local production of rice. And if local production cannot meet up with local demand yet, it is only common sense that imports will cover excess demand. Nigerians are too emotional over this 2019 election and it is affecting our ability to think through whatever we read . Economic illetrates all over this thread

Well, statistics dont support your assertation... import started dropping in 2013 due to previous Gov agric Policy.....

https://www.indexmundi.com/agriculture/?country=ng&commodity=milled-rice&graph=imports

2013 2800 (1000 MT) 0.00 %
2014 2600 (1000 MT) -7.14 %
2015 2100 (1000 MT) -19.23 %

2016 2500 (1000 MT) 19.05 %
2017 2600 (1000 MT) 4.00 %
2018 3000 (1000 MT) 15.38 %

SternProphet:
There was flood in 2018. 50% of Nigeria's rice farms were affected. That is the only reason Nigeria will import rice in 2019. It will never get up to 2013/2014 levels.

Young PDP supporters suffering inferiority complex of being supporters of the dumbest, most wasteful and most corrupt party on the African continent should think hard and research issues before posting comments.

In fact, if you deny the act of God (floods) and sit lazily in front of smart phone denying progress made in your country, let me shock you, Benue, Plateau and Nasarawa states are voting heavily for Buhari because of Agric revolution and thousands of millionaires created. There are lies on social media but there are also practical truths.

Same report says our output has been growing since 2012 to a peak of 3.7mmt. However, this is still a shortfall from our annual consumption of over 6mmt.

The report thus shed a positive light on government's agricultural program in the last 7 years and also indicate that any smart person who invests in the rice value chain now should expect exciting yield in the short to mid term at least.

As expected, the Nigerian youth won't catch this vital info as they are more interested in the mundane matters of clamouring for/against Buhari or Atiku. When the Dangotes and their children plow in and cash out massive, this same youths will run to town screaming about the rich getting richer!

Bros, plzz respect your self na.

You cannot reduce import by 90%(according to govt) in 2018 and by 2019 you are projected to be the 2nd largest importer in the world. And then you attribute that to "increase in demand ".

And that is for a country that was around the 3rd or 4th largest importer by 2016.

You people should Fear God na

how is this figure accurate?

Nigeria has banned importation of rice. This means there are no more containers of foreign rice being declared at the ports.

Now I know foreign rice are still being smuggled through the land boarders, usually done with small vehicles carrying few bags, but how Bloomberg put a figure to smuggling and even project a rise in the figure for the coming year is what I dont understand.

Something definitely doesn't make sense with the news.
what about the containers of rice the custom officers didn't show us on tv.

This report is positive in that our rice production has increased by 50% which is very high by any standard. The bad news is that our rice demand has also increased but by meagre 4%.

They used figures from our neighbouring countries of Benin, Niger, Cameroon and Togo whose rice imports increased artificially with Nigeria as the final destination.

There's some contradiction in that report. It say

"Production had increased more than 50 percent since 2012 to 3.7 million tons last year. Domestic demand rose 4 percent to 6.7 million tons in the 2017-18 year that ended in May".

Yet it says

"Nigeria’s rice imports will jump 13 percent next year to 3.4 million metric tons..."

It doesn't make sense

All these farmers association people, where are they that we don't get to see them?
I want to become a member of that association.
At least I have upto 2 hectares of rice farm, 7 hectares of beans farm and just 3 plots of sorghum farm. I think I'm qualified to be a member.

PS.
Nigeria will continue to import all what they consume until the government decides to make farming attractive. Farming in Nigeria is hard labour (I know what we're going through).

Even after the hard labour, somebody will just price your goods as if he's doing you a favour buying it.

The agro industries that are supposed to be in the north to buy from farmers and process it are all in the south.
Who wants to suffer?

If the government of this country will invest in agriculture, I will not even hunt for any white collar job cos I know how much I'll get from my farm. But what do we have today? Absolutely nothing! Let them keep importing every food they need till the end of time. Useless country.

Farmer, don't give up. True cost of inputs has risen, farmers had lots of challenges this year too especially because of floods.

We're expecting scarcity and price hikes next year. So if you farm successfully this year, cheer up especially if you can store.

Investing in farming is the highest paying venture now, ceteris peribus.

I can't imagine sharing a nationality with a one so daft in idea and knowledge. It is sad but can't blame God because I am meant for a purpose; may be to tutor you.

Sir, I will first admonished you to tow the path of civility. Attack issues not the messenger. By so doing you must have given your mind a chance to learn than allowing hatred, insult, and foolishness to ruin your already battered life.

Sir, I am surprised that most of the times people tried to equate progress with the highly placed. No! All fingers were not meant to be equall. Dangote was Dangote and I am who I am. Go and read more on Dangote and how it all started. If you care, and are real, noticed that rice farming, especially on commercial basis is capital intensive. Where are the loans coming from?

Besides, do you read the report by Bloomberg? Where are the rice that Audu Ogbeh claimed has lead to the closure of milling facilities in Thailand? Please for God's sake be yourself. Do not sell your conscience for a peanut.
