A former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Dr Olisa Agbakoba (SAN), said on Tuesday that President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration is the worst in the history of Nigeria. Agbakoba, who is one of the leaders of the National Intervention Movement, described the last four years under Buhari as locust years, saying the Coalition of United Political Parties were determined to save the country by bringing Buhari’s reign to an end. He described Buhari’s re-election mantra of “Next Level,” as a failed document and one lacking in “conceptual overhang”. Agbakoba, who rated the campaign document of the Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, better than Buhari’s, said were the presidential election to hold today, Atiku would win, while Buhari would come “distant second”. He, however, expressed the fear that Buhari, if defeated, might not be willing to relinquish power, decrying the presence of the service chiefs at the launch of Buhari’s re-election campaign on Sunday. The lawyer spoke with journalists in his Ikoyi, Lagos office on Tuesday morning. He said, “We clearly understand that to win the forthcoming elections, we require a united opposition. So, all the parties are simply presenting their presidential candidates but by January, the CUPP will formalise its consensus candidate. “It may well be Atiku or it may not but the person who will be chosen must be one who has the heavy-lifting, who can get the job done. “Personally, I’m pro-Atiku because I think he has the heavy-lifting but I will not preempt anything. “We are all united in the mantra and the strong song around our campaign; that is: Anybody but Buhari. That’s the campaign – Anybody but Buhari. “We are making sure that the four locust years from 2015 to 2019 will never repeat themselves in Nigeria. This has been the worst government in Nigeria’s history. “Unemployment rate at 20 million, youth unemployment is so high, inflation at about 18 per cent, borrowing requirement or interest rate at about 22 per cent; nothing is working. So, we need to do something to reclaim it. “So, that’s the message; we are working with the united opposition party, which we now have. Obasanjo’s own is called ADC, I am affiliated to the Peoples Trust and all of these come under the umbrella of the third force.” https://punchng.com/buharis-govt-worst-in-nigerias-history-agbakoba/amp/ |

It is very visible to the blind and audible to the deaf that present administration lacks the clout politically, economically and otherwise to govern a society as diverse and complex as ours. Before you bash me ask yourself since the civil war has there being anytime in our history we have being this divided as we are? It has not always being about the tribe and religion of the person at the helms of affairs, moreover in this same country we have had a muslim-muslim ticket that got appeal across regions. The question sane people ask is what went wrong especially under this administration? The answer is very simple and clear, the rhetorics/actions and inactions of the President led to this. When he won the elections which was characterized by heavy mudslinging from both sides, during his Swearing-In speech he read a famous line "I belong to everybody and belong to no body" which was a conscious effort at reuniting the nation, but the action of the government proved otherwise, immediately he started taking tough stands against the Niger Delta disaparaging legitimate concerns thinking that military might will resolve the issue not untill some of our soldiers began to drown in the creeks and the boys they went to eliminate were the ones rescuing them, before the government got hold of things the militants had bombed us into recession, take a look at the 95% vs 5% statement which is very unfortunate, he had a very golden chance to win the people of the South East by proving to them in action that he is better than Jonathan through massive projects or even atleast try to balance up things in his appointments but he did otherwise infact his first policy in east was to cancel the contract awarded for the 2nd Niger bridge. Even if it was'nt done maliciously how do you want them to feel when they where not engaged? and opposition harped on this to sell themselves Why was he taking a tough stand on issues that could have being resolved by mere tête-à-tête? there are many more questions than answer. That is why alot of people wondered why anytime the president travelled out of the country, the country seems to be better managed by the VP(Osinbajo) what was the magic? Osinbajo maybe because he is an intellectual saw the need for engagements and in all honesty the man achieved alot. Many people think it is "Crocodile smile" that brought about peace in the Niger Delta not knowing that Osinbajo was directly responsible for it because he humbled himself and allowed for engagement. Look at how PMB handled the issue of Nnmadi Kanu. Many people don't know that this guy have being shouting Biafra/IPOB since 1998, but past government ignored him, he hurled unprintable insults on Jonathan but he was not given the attention he was seeking even when the DSS arrested during OBJ and under GEJ they secretly dealt with him but later released him after discovering that he was looking for that much needed publicity to be seen as a Messiah fighting for his people, but what did our own PMB did? he wanted to show that he is a "General" coupled with the fact that his advisers didn't help matters(Moreover most of them are all from one part of the country, you don't expect them to have a national-view of things) worsened the whole situation by instituting a totally needless operation "Python Dance" in a region that was adjudged the most peaceful by International observers, and also couple dwith the fact that the AREWA youths that were caught on camera issuing threats(to Igbos in the North) and even dared the government to arrest them and nothing happened but at the same time Kanu was declared a terrorist. That further ingrained hatred amongst most people of the southeast towards the FG, those that never supported Kanu started seeing reasons with him, Kanu lashed on legitimate concerns such as the issue of Herdmen killings, Nepotism and other percievd flaws of PMB administration to shoot himself to limelight, even some people from the middlebelt started buying his idea of Biafra who would think today that Israel who's an ally of Nigeria will give protective cover to a "Terrorist". Had PMB made conscientious effort to unite the nation through engagement and actions the like of Kanu would have being ignored, even in his(Kanu) height of what I call "Madness" he had tremendous respect for Shagari and Yar'Adua more than any Igbo leader except Ojukwu and this men were Fulanis. This is a sign that when you do thingss right even your arc enemy will subtly admire you. Today Atiku is now seen as a unifying factor in 2018, when at this stage of our democracy we ought to be discussing about econmy, foreign policies etc we are now stuck on the unity of the nation even after over 40 years of a very bitter Civil war. Most people know that some of the bigshots from the southwest region like Asiwaju and co still supporting the FG do so because they're eyeing 2023, apart from that everyone is feeling the heat, the day Tinubu withdraws his support for PMB expect EFCC, ICPC, DSS and other state agencies to dust his files for now he is a born-again saint. If you point out to legitimate issues bothering us you will be called a Looter or they will say you were benefiting from corruption before and now feeling the heat of the fight against corruption while they systematically render the economy useless. I pray we get it right in this country soonest, because the way we are going only God can deliver us, no nation in this world has survived a second Civil war and as it stands almost all the regions in Nigeria are already in a cold war as seen even from the hatred and bigotry being shown even on nairaland and other online media platforms. We need to cure ourselves of mutual hatred to make any progress and move our dear country forward. |
