This was my comment on a previous thread regarding political economy....

High oil price is what gives the naira value as most of our foreign earnings come from oil and gas sales.

So when oil price crashes and there is little or no foreign reserves, investors naturally run away because they risk not being able to repatriate their money out of the country.

Nigeria needs to gradually diversify its economy away from oil and reduce its imports especially on items that consume our foreign reserve the most like petroleum products, rice, wheat and steel.

In summary, produce these items locally and possibly export them (after which we can then float the naira), so that the strength of the naira can rely on other things apart from oil.

Build infrastructure and long-term investors will come in and set up industries in Nigeria. We have a huge market already.

We all know that, Ogbeni. Nigeria needs to diversify and be export-driven instead of being import-dependent. No doubts about that. I'd simply say you're the one who lacks knowledge here because you seemed to find it pretty difficult to decipher such a simple comment as mine. That's why buhari called you guys lazy youths. I have read several comments here made by some of you...all bereft of reason...full of bias and junks. Wait a minute, how much was the Naira exchanged for the dollar, when OBJ was in power and oil price was dangling between 30usd to 40usd PB/PD and daily oil output was pretty lower than what we have today...and now that Buhari the corruption fighter in quote, is in power? Answering that would give you a clue and needed insight into your next response. Mind you,it's still same import-dependent economy, nothing much has changed so far.

God bless Nigeria, amen. Let me quickly remind you of this...whether naira or dollar is shared in any election ( which our politicians always do, anyway), it still goes back to the circulation . It remains in Nigeria and spent in Nigeria by Nigerians. The only effect it could have is inflation, period...and that doesn't cause forex to be scarce rather , forex would experience what's called a glut. You have dollar, I have dollar and everybody has dollar. It would become surplus but in case of capital flight, everything is mopped up and taken back to their home countries by investors. Had those dollars you mentioned still remained amongst us, our naira wouldn't have been so weakened.

Thank God we all agreed on the fact that there are cabals so that points to the fact that there are very powerful people in the country almost more than the presidency who may even belong to the major opposition party that control the economy. What really irks me is that we all can't focus on making this country better we just want to vote in a party we voted out cause they didn't offer much for 16 years i don't see anyone actively campaigning for moghalu or many of the sensible others we just want a "magic" this said party can offer.
Even when you're building a house you don't just close your eyes and open it to it's completion, it takes steps and stages.

But whatever decision we take in any election would affect the economy, positively or otherwise. In 2015, we wanted to pay one of our manufacturers in euro. That was early 2015. Before I knew it, exchange rate of 245 naira to 1 euro had jumped to 450 naira to 1 euro. Many of my colleagues had laid off their staff due to the economic woes unleashed on us by buhari and his bad economic policy . Some myopic people said Jonathan and his people looted Nigeria into recession and some gullible minds stayed glued to that bunch of lies. Corruption became the order of the day under gej, agreed . But the situation we are in today wasnt brought about by corruption under jonathan . Theres always corruption in every govt in Nigeria. Even in this govt, there's massive corruption going on. What happened after gej handed over was called a capital flight. The momemt buhari won election, many investors took their dollars and euro away because they lost trust in his govt. Foreign airlines left. I remember Delta airline very well.

Oga forget story. Dollar issue happened because of low oil price. Jonathan too started having issue with the exchange rate when oil price started plunging..just that ppl like u forget easily...
