FG Urged To Establish Riverine Areas Development Commission

The Federal government has been called upon to put machineries in motion for the establishment of Riverine Areas Development Commission.

A former Deputy Governor of the State, Dr Chinedu Emeka made the call while exchanging views with newsmen at the ongoing Anambra State Trade Fair in Onitsha.

He explained that the Commission when established will go a long way in checking the challenges of annual flood disasters in some parts of the country especially in riverine communities.

He also said that the Riverine Areas Development Commission will be in position to develop and enhance the tourist potential of the concerned communities, pointing out that local government areas inthe State such as Ayamelum, Anambra East and West, Onitsha North and South, Ogbaru and parts of Oyi will benefit socially andeconomically when the Riverine Areas Development Commission is established.

Dr Emeka who is the Senatorial Candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, in Anambra North District, in the 2019 general election stressed the need for sustained efforts towards urgent completion of the Second Niger Bridge and resuscitation of the River Port in Onitsha.

The former Deputy Governor equally called on more indigenous and foreign investors to take advantage of the business friendly environment created by the Obiano administration to bring more investments to the State.

Kano govt to introduce efficient mass transit system in the metropolis
By PlatinumPost - December 4, 2018

Kano govt to introduce efficient mass transit system in the metropolis

Kano state Government has concluded arrangement to introduce an efficient public mass transit system in Kano metropolis, as part of strategies to reduce congestion and improve efficiency in road usage.

The move will also go a long way in improving the state’s ranking on the global Ease of Doing Business Index as the government is constructing more roads, with ancillary facilities, and renovating others in the state capital.

“The system will work on the principle of PPP where the State Government provides the infrastructure like roads, bus shelters, bus stops, and others while the private operator will supply the buses”, the state governor Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje announced.

“A private investor, Kano Metropolitan Transport Company, encouraged by our commitment to the development of road infrastructure, has agreed to begin by putting 50 brand new buses on our roads, at the onset, but will gradually increase the number to serve our people”, he pointed out.

According to a statement by the

Director – General, Media and Publicity, Government House, Kano, Ameen K. Yassar said the governor made the assertion when a delegation from the state visited the office complex and manufacturing plant of MVC Egypt, manufacturers of buses and trucks at Obour city and Salheya respectively in Cairo, Egypt, to inspect the buses for suitability and conformity with Nigerian terrain.

Represented by the state Commissioner for Works, Housing and Transport, Engr. Aminu Aliyu, the governor noted that the buses were of international standard and going by the engineering details, would stand the test of time on Nigerian roads.

“This intervention by the private sector will encourage more investors to commit more resources into the business of transportation and will gradually make our roads assume the look of similar infrastructure in advanced countries”, he maintained.

According to him, “To address our transport infrastructure gap we have spent billions of Naira on the construction of the underpass at Madobi/Panshekara Road Junction, which has been completed and commissioned by President Muhammadu Buhari while work is going on the Bukavu Barracks flyover and underpass, the Dangi multi level underpass and flyover while the Murtala Muhammad Way flyover is on the verge of completion”.

“We are also reconstructing and expanding several roads in the state capital while recently we embarked on the renovation of 31 roads including Nassarawa Hospital, Sheik Jaafar, Eastern byepass-Unguwa Uku, Bompai, Abbatoir and Civic Centre road”, the governor added.

“Others are Obasanjo Road, Bello Road, ‘Yantsaki Road-Tudun Murtala, Sharada, Rijiyar Zaki, Rafin Dan Nana, Ashton Road, Manladan Kulkul Road, Emirs Palace, Kofar Fampo and ‘Yan Katako-Zaria Road among others,” he said.‎

He expressed the commitment of his administration to completing all the on-going road constructions in the state as part of his administration’s urban renewal programme.

‎The governor called on the people to support the government to enable it to continue to deliver on its promises, assuring that other roads would also be given attention.‎

Anambra school raises alarm over refuse dump

Posted By: Emma Elekwa On: December 6, 2018 In: Education

Teachers and pupils of New Bethel Primary and Nursery school, Onitsha, Anambra State have decried the indiscriminate dumping of refuse around the school premises.

They said the refuse heap in front of the school constituted health hazard for them and their visitors, calling for its immediate disposal.

Speaking to The Nation, the headmistress of the school, Mrs. Oby Okafor, said she had written to the agency saddled with the responsibility of refuse disposal, but it was yet to respond.

“I have written to the Anambra State Waste management agency (ASWAMA), to dispose the refuse dump in front of the school, but the plea fell on deaf ears.

“I have also told the environmental health personnel but they keep promising they will come. I am also appealing to our working governor to help us because our children are suffering,” she said.

A resident of the area, Mrs Ngozi Mba, called on government to come to their rescue.

She said the ugly trend, which she blamed on over population, was affecting residents adversely.

“One major challenge confronting Onitsha residents is waste management occasioned by over population.

“Major roads in the city like MCC road, Onitsha-Owerri road, Court road, among others have been overtaken by refuse.

“The one in front of this primary and nursery school is causing serious health nuisance to the pupils and teachers,” she said.

Some of the pupils who spoke to The Nation on conditions of anonymity, described the stench oozing out of the refuse heap as unimaginable.

“This thing they are dumping here is not good for our health. It is affecting us seriously. I want government to take it away from our school premises,” one of the pupils lamented.

Another pupil called on government to put up a notice board to serve as a warning to defaulters.

Reacting to the development, Manager-in-charge of Solid Waste in Onitsha South, Mr Achike Iweze, attributed the problem to the indiscriminate dumping of refuse by the residents.

He advised them to follow the standard procedure recommended by the government.

Iweze also advocated for the overhauling of the system, including setting up of a task force to monitor and arrest defaulters.

“The government should overhaul the entire system, inspect all contractors to make sure they have all the required equipment needed to cover the areas.

“The government should also set up a task force to monitor and arrest those dumping refuse indiscriminately to stem the tide,” he said.
