Good and fine, they should join their counterparts at home, at least their strike will make Ngige attend to ASUU faster and then ASUU will get what they want and call of their strike leaving ASUP behind, then later ASUP will have no choice than to call of their own strike even if it means settling for the least amount they are given. At the end, ASUU always win.

Sense will not kill me.

You can't be the mouthpiece of the government because the government of the day isn't ready to live up to its mandates.

Sorry, but your critique is too lazy.

I read the ASUU 2009 agreement. The agreement promised UNIVERSITES alone 1.5 trillion (then) in yearly funding.

Our budget is 9trillion. next year.

Polytechinics too probably need at least N1 trillion in yearly additional funding

And primary and secondary schools need at least N1 trillion if not more.

The problem is funding..and what makes it worse is the corruption inside.

You cannot expect to get $200000 education by paying just $200....it is not possible.

Yes...my parents went to school 'for free'...back when we had just six universities, back when it was harder to get into poly or university (you needed to pass O level, A level and from 1978 JAMB)....and when one university had just 3000 students in 1973.

Now, we have probably 5 million students in polys and universites...and it costs N600000 to N2million to train one student...but students pay less than N50000-200000. And then there is corruption.

And oil price is at $60. We need it at $140 before we can get a budget that can sustain all of us.

So, let's be realistic, let's fight corruption, but let's not think we have a bottomless pit full of dolalrs somewhere in Aso villa.

It’s safe to say that there is no more Tetiary education in Nigeria for now just primary and secondary school. Even the so called primary and secondary could as well be on strike but most are now private school which isn’t even regulated an Igbo spare part dealer can as well own a nursery primary school so long he has money and it’s is less regulated or even supervised by the so called government.

The only way to end strikes in Nigeria's education sector.

1.Increase school fees.

2.Privatise universites,and redirect funding to other sectors...including polytechnics and C of E.

3.Raise taxes to half the income of every Nigerian in return for free education

4.Take another loan.

5.Pray oil goes up to $140 per barrel.
Are you crazy?;!!

You must be atiku & Buhari put together times 4, how can you include number 2, 3 & 4, how could the poor afford to survive when you take 50% of the paltry 18k they get monthly.

You are evil, The solution is to exterminate all Nigerian political elites, reduce political office allowances & salaries by 80% . usher in new leaders that are ready to work & not make billions. Make stealing public money punishable by death. Makes things stable, then divide regions to be autonomous to provide for themselves & drastically reduce power from Abuja

First, thanks for calling me evil. I really like it that you called me something I did not call you.

But , on to the issue....we cannot exterminate the Nigerian political elites and hope for 'selfless new guys'...Has been tried before in France (within 20 years, the elite were back) and Russia ( them communist officials lived too well...even had their own special shops).

The harsh reality is that tertiary educaiton costs a lot of money. So much money.

Now, most of the political elite of this country went to school for free. But back then...it was a lot harder to get into tertiary education, there were far fewer students(by 1987...there were 100000 students in Nigerian universities)...and we had fewer schools.

Now we have over 70 government unviersites, just as many polytechinics...and so on

And we need trillions of naira to provide facilites that are at par with international standard...and at the same time privide free education.

So, even if we get 'selfless leaders'...the funding issue is still going to be there.

I hear Nigerians screaming that Germany and Denmark have free education. Sure...at tax rates of 50%.

Is that why most of those leaders who had free education in standard schools at that time, lack university certificates, refused to do NYSC, Some even struggled to find them WAEC certificate.

On the second issue, how much is the minimum of wage Germany & Denmark, if Nigeria can increase it to that amount, then tax 50% for basic amenities, then cool.

Did you know in the past Nigeria has an effective tax collection system, every household pays tax based on the number of people in that family, to be collected by district heads & submitted to the government.

But the political leaders abolished. Nigerian in the past was on the right track before our leaders screwed up everything.

Well, some of our leaders in the past did not have the advantage of going to unviersity..largely because we did not have enough unviersities, and because entry requirements were much harder (5 credits did not cut it)

Going to university, until the 1980's...was not that easy. (My mum and two out of her 5 siblings have degrees).

Plus, in the run up to independence...we did not have that many graduates...but we needed to get people in high office fast...(and the funny thing is that in the UK many people too did not go to university...the concept of 'everyone going to university in Europe is a recent thing..like the 1970's).

NYSC...was established in 1973..plus service in the Army and other paramillitary organisations makes one ineligible.

We were Nigerianising fast in the 1950's and 60...that's why we had many 'non graduates in place' . And many of them non grads did establish things like Universities! (Sir Ahmadu Bello...zero degree..pushed for the establishment of ABU).

On the second issue, how much is the minimum of wage Germany & Denmark, if Nigeria can increase it to that amount, then tax 50% for basic amenities, then cool.
That's the problem...we can't. Our budget...even removing corruption...cannot reach that level.

Yet....Nigerians want Cambridge level degrees free of charge. It doesn't work...it has to be paid for.

And if we try to bring it back...Nigerians will PROTEST.

Most Nigerians so don't like taxes. After all we are a rich country...we have oil! (Which has not been earning enough money for us recently..due to low prices.)

I don't agree with u that most Nigerians don't like taxes. There's a general feeling of apathy in d country toward those in govt cos they haven't been able to account 4d resources in their custody. If u look deep down, u will c that there's really no order in Nigeria. Nigerians fend 4 themselves most of d time. Nigerians just don't trust govt not that they don't like taxes.

D problem with education is a reflection of d decadence in Nigeria, a product of gross mismanagement & lack of planning by those who were beneficiaries of d system. Money is good but increase in school fees wouldn't solve all d problems in d system & it would surely not guarantee quality education

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has disclosed that it will still go ahead with the planned nationwide strike tomorrow December 12th, 2018. This was made known by the National President of the union, Usman Dutse, during an interview with newsmen in Lagos. Mr Dutse said the strike became necessary following the failure of the federal government to implement the 2009 and 2017 agreements reached with the union.

According to him, we are commencing our strike tomorrow as scheduled. Everything is set and there is no going back. He mentioned that there is an invitation for a meeting on December 17, but the union will still commence the strike on Wednesday
“I don’t know what will happen at the meeting or what they have decided, but until we meet with them, we cannot predict. ”I don’t know what they plan to present until we meet with them,” he said.

Mr Duste said the strike would be comprehensive and total, until all issues raised were adequately addressed by the government adding that all members have been issued a notice to comply and down tools by midnight of December 12. and there would be no academic activities in all the polytechnics until further notice.

He listed the demands of the union to include non-implementation of Need Assessment reports of 2014 as agreed with the minister at the meeting of October 2017.

Renegotiation in the union’s 2010 agreement; non-release of arrears of CONTISS 15 migration for the lower cadre; non-release of arrears of promotions and shortfalls in personnel releases as well as non-payment of allowances.

Other agitations are non-payment of salaries in many state-owned polytechnics, non-payment of union check off dues, pension deductions and other statutory deductions from staff salaries to the appropriate bodies, continue victimisation of union officers.
