Is The geographical "NORTH" More Populated Than The geographical "SOUTH" by omonnakoda: 12:32pm On Jan 08, 2019 |
We all know how controversial this subject is in Nigeria To answer the question we must address first the definitions what is North and what is south From a geograhiical perspective North and South should mean drawing a latitude through the middle and anything above is north whilst anyything below is south Such a scheme uld Include Benue and Kogi entirely in the South as well as significant bits of Taraba,Kwara, Nassarawa,Adamawa and even Abuja People often mix the Political North with the Gegraphical North For discussion on population it is a geographical point If we take the geographical North versus the Geographical south it is clear the south is more populated

Politically Benue is considered North whilsts Oyo is south but look at the map. Also compare Oyo to Kogi .Nassarawa and Adamawa or Taraba |

North more populate than South because politically you can't regard kwara, kogi,Benue Taraba as a south. 3 Likes |

This is also similar to political SE and grohraphical SE. Geographically the whole old eastern region should be SE. geographically the boundary between north and south should be around southern kaduna 2 Likes |

What baffle me most about this Geo political zone is how Cross river will be regards as SS and Abia state yo be SE. just look to the map and tell yourself the naked truth. I believe they segregate the Geo political zone inline with their language. Another question is that who drafted the map in first place |
Re: Is The geographical "NORTH" More Populated Than The geographical "SOUTH" by hakanai(m): 1:31pm On Jan 08, 2019 |
Yes even when geographically the North covers more land mass and has more towns and communities than the south? That in itself may negate the assumptions and positions of the south. As much as people shouldn't just sit somewhere, based on rumor or visited a handful of places or worse remain in an area to assume they are more of them than others. For you to be an authority on the populations of south and North. You must have visited all 36 states plus Abuja and taken a fair number of communities and villages to conclude such. As it stands the closest was done by the Population commission because it went far to cover more areas in collation than someone who just wakes up from sleep in his zone to say we are more than you numerically. If such assumptions can be made then it is only fair to conclude my village is more populated. 4 Likes |

allthingsgood:No in geography you draw a line through the middle anything above is "North" and below is "south" The purpose of this thread is "geography" to address the claims that the population figures are rigged. I do not believe that is the case Often it is said that across West Africa the population across the South is higher and why is Nigeria's different? Those who make this argument are making a geographical argument The geographical response is Nigeria is not different The geographical south in Nigeria is more populated than the geographical North because significant parts of the political North are geographically in the South e.g Oyo is more "North" than Kogi or Benue. In geography Norh South divide presupposes an "EQUATOR" ie equal on both sides so from a PURELY geographical perspective the South is more populated and we cannot argue that the population figures are rigged on those grounds That is the point of this thread so please try to understand it thoroughly All that talk of our fathers marryin 10 wives is irrelevant If you divide Nigeria into two equal land masses North and South then there are more people in the Southern part. WHY 1 Like |

omonnakoda: I dont know what school u attended o, but there is a difference between geographical map and geopolitical zones. ok. The north is almost twice the size of the south, period. However the north alone cannot guarantee elections. This is also why igbos or other minority will never make Presidency without the support of the north. Unfortunately, the two leading candidates are from the north. 1 Like |

hakanai: Geographically by definition North= south i. 50:50 politically or administratively it s another matter so some of those places that were under the Brtish Protectorate of Northern Nigeria are not geographically in the north of Nigeria. It is important to differentiate concepts of "north" geographically and "North" politically which really refers to the British protectorate of Northern Nigeria a political administrative colonial space. A least we must do this when referencing population trends in other West African countries for comparison 1 Like |

The notion that North is more populated than Southern Nigeria is nothing but BLATANT LIES. The bulk of northern population census results right from time were filed with goats, cows, sheeps and other animal populations aimed to swell up Norths population for politics of parasitism. More developed coastal areas are naturally more populated than arid desert regions anywhere in the world. 4 Likes 2 Shares |

mandarin:Fact is because of the political implications of population we are never dispassionate on this issue One thing you hear a lot is about how population declines from north to south across West Africa. The question is this North to south across west Africa is it politcal or geographical Are we comparing like with like Northern Nigeria was a colony of Britain it is not the same as the geographical North of Nigeria. There is no way you can be talking geography and say Oyo is south but Benue is North or Kogi is north. That is not geography. Look at the map. Even Ekiti state |

saaron: Nothing to do with parasitism Benue state was part of Northern Nigeria whic was a British colony/protectorate. That is how it came about . Any how the purpose of this thread is not about those parasitism issues but a technical discusson about a purely technical consideration 1 Like |

Re: Is The geographical "NORTH" More Populated Than The geographical "SOUTH" by saaron(m): 2:19pm On Jan 08, 2019 |
omonnakoda:British colonialism in Nigeria was mainly for British political interest, not the people they were colonizing. If Britain had the interest of the people in mind they will NEVER AMALGAMATE two regions (North and South) with nothing in common into one protectorate in 1914. |

BabangidaHamza: Population is not dependent on the number of women married to one man rather it is dependent on the number of available women of reproductive age in a locality and their birth rate minus mortality rate. Divorcée or a married wisdom can't replicate eight or six children per marriage. |

And i bet if i do a study of all the countries in West Africa bordering the Atlantic, i'd discover that in most if not all, the coastal region is more populated than the arid inner/northern parts that are closer to the Sahara. Of course with the exception of Nigeria, where reason stands on its head! 3 Likes 1 Share |
Re: Is The geographical "NORTH" More Populated Than The geographical "SOUTH" by saaron(m): 2:28pm On Jan 08, 2019 |
omonnakoda:If I m to consider your map, states like Plateau, Nassarawa, Abuja, Kogi will be termed Central states or Mid states or Middle belt as we call them now, not North central. while the likes of Benue and Taraba will be termed Mid western eastern states. The whole of South east and South South will be termed South. In real terms considering the map of Nigeria, there's nothing like South east and South south giving religious and cultural similarities. |
Re: Is The geographical "NORTH" More Populated Than The geographical "SOUTH" by omonnakoda: 2:29pm On Jan 08, 2019 |
MadamExcellency:First his premise is factually incorrect. There are many places in the political North that do not marry several wives and which are predominantly Christian There are many places in the political south that marry several wives The most important determinants of population are food/water and disease What we can see from this thread is if we take Nigeria land mass and divide 50:50 into North South then we would inlude Benue and kogi about half of Kwara Nassarawa Taraba and Adamawa in the south and the south would be more populous. This correlates with rainfall and agricultural output. Nothing to do with number of wives |
Re: Is The geographical "NORTH" More Populated Than The geographical "SOUTH" by omonnakoda: 2:32pm On Jan 08, 2019 |
Remember that Abuja is the geographical centre of the country Any latitude dividing the country in two would run through Abuja and then we would see that what obtains across West Africa also obtains in Nigeria. Population would be higher in the southern 50% of the land mass |
