I disagree with you. Modern defenders are actually considered timid compared with defenders of Pele's time. Referees are more protective today. In fact Pele arrived injured at his first world cup in 1958, he was also injured during 1962 world cup though self inflicted. World cup 1966 was horrible for him as he was subjected to the most brutal of tackles by the Bulgarian and Portuguese defenders to the extent of announcing that he won't be part of any future world cups, though he later rescinded his decision.

It is Brazil vs Argentina thing and also the small matter of race - this is deeper than what you see on the surface. Pele criticising Messi is childsplay compared to the Argies opinion on Pele being the king of football. This issue is bigger than Messi. This became huge with someone who actually won the world cup - Diego Maradona and even to a lesser & unrealistic extent before him, Mario Kempes. Pele is only dishing it back raw
