codemaniacs:what Gabriel004 and Moneywomen17 are both defending is baseless, the number of people speaking yoruba language is far more than those speaking Edo language both that does not prove that the ooni is in any way greater that Oba of Benin the Oba had loyalise and slave from tribes that numbered far more than the yorubas, people like the ijaws, urhobos, delta Igbo, itsekeries, the multiple tribes of Esan and the inhabitants of Dahomey. even presently kings from different state all pay homage to the supreme king, people like the ovie of delta, the aleko of nupe, countless onoijies all bow to the oba.please no Yoruba king controls such deamenour. take it or leave it, the oba by divine right and accuracy of his dynasty is the major king of southern and western Nigeria. 1 Like 1 Share |

PAGAN9JA: Dude, stop hallucinating. You dont know me one single bit. You may be a traditionalist but it doesn't mean traditions and culture are reserved for you only. You don't own a culture, religion or any traditions single handedly. All the above mentioned things are meant for people of a specific tribe who follow it. You are so jealous that you don't want your fellow Africans to learn yet you are ready to share with whites and outsiders!!!! You sound very senseless by the way. |

codemaniacs:please don't say more baseless stuff here, if I remember my history clearly,Oba Eweka invented the title of Oba,at the beginning of his new dynasty that has now spanned through 39 reigns. the title has now been adopted by different Yoruba rulers. the oba is not a king either, a very pupolar Benin name says "Obayojie" which means the oba is not a king.the oba is a divine emperor. the world recognizes the Benin empire has one among the few historic monarchy in the entire world. the throne of the Alafin you mentioned as the supreme Yoruba ruler has really suffered opposition from his own nation, from the control of the oyomesi,to the stubborness of the Areonakankafo doesn't spell the Alafin out as a ruler of authority. if you knew the extent of the power that the oba controls you won't be saying all these. 1 Like 1 Share |

codemaniacs:I only debated the greatness of the Bini kingdom with respect to other African tribes. we both know that the Europeans could annihilate both the Bini and the Yoruba warefare. so don't give Me that fought them for 500 years trash, more accurately you should say that the Yoruba's lost all their battles against the white man till they finally surrenderd, not that I have verified that in history. it took a lot of deciet and betrayal for the white man to conquer Edo people in that time of history, but the white mans history still speaks of the glamour of Edo people that outshined other tribes of Africa. |

History is taking a huge beating from you today. Your ooni and your alafin gave up to the British without a fight, in the whole Nigeria Benin Kingdom gave the Brits the hardest time. Where you are getting your imaginary 500 year war with the British is beyond me... But this is what you Yoruba do all day: make up stuff and act like it's true. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nh2Tac1gNPU codemaniacs: |

Of course the guy is lying, there is no record of any 500 hundred year war between Britain and any African entity. Moreover, the word Yoruba came around near the colonial era, around 150 years ago. The only precolonial maps showing autonomous tribes whom now identify as Yoruba is from the near colonial era. These Yoruba guys really know how to lie, but you must have seen that this(thé claim of 500 Year war by thé yoruba Guy) was a little too big a lie. The British defeated Benin Kingdom thanks to the fact they had ww1 weapons available to them in 1897. And Benin Kingdom didn't have that kind of fire power. And of course the betrayal of some nobles helped the brits. Simple. Chidorx60: |

Chidorx60:ogbeni stop lying the Dahomey people have no idea who Benin are or more accurately edo people cuz they never encounter u lot. There is nothing called aleko of nupe their ruler is etsu nupe and they were never subjugated by the Benin. The ijaw were never conquered by the Benin in their history also so stop lying. The Dahomey were tributaries to oyo. The ooni of ife throne is older than the new throne created by oramiyan called oba so how is Benin throne superior. 3 Likes |

Chidorx60:yoruba say obajulaye which means oba is greater on earth. Oranmiyan is the first king of Benin and brought the word oba with him before then ur king was ogiso not oba. Oba was adopted by Benin not Yoruba cuz as far as am concerned ever Yoruba king answers to oba from Nigeria to modern day Benin republic. Oba is simply a Yoruba word for king u lot word for king is Ogie. The alaafin monarchy is different to Benin like so many Yoruba kingdom they have people like oyomesi who are free born man that check mate the power of alafin and stop him from being trynical simple, it didn’t stop him from waging war and conquering land. 1 Like |

prolog2:the British fought the Benin with 1200 men and massacre and burn down the city while exiling ur king from his own land. It was never a huge conested war like u are making it out to be. They came and defeated u lot simple. The Ijebu fought against the British too before u forget history. And the egba too was also not defeated in a war instead they were recognized as an independent government even though it didn’t last long. Egba was only officially under British governor direct rule in early 20 century. 2 Likes |

It is pathetic to see these kind of nonsense spewed out over a traditional celebration. If this was a Christian celebration everyone of you would not have the audacity to send out these rubbish. All you would say is Happy Easter, Happy Christmas, Eku Odun. If it was Muslim celebration, we would be hearing Barka Sallah, Eid Mubarak, Eku Odun. Judaism, Christianity and Islam, all had their foundation in Yoruba cult. Even if they did not, this is a festivity for the culture ifyou cannot say Happy Osoosi Day, or Happy Obatala Day,then keep quiet, please! |

As many times has the discussion has come up on the ties between Yoruba and Edo, I have kept my mouth shut from saying much. In fact I have intervened on many occasions to steer my Yoruba brothers away. They warned me that Edo needs to be silenced otherwise they will keep regurgitating their lies and cement it forcefully as truth. I do believe that time has come to put EDO in its place. I am willing to open a new thread if it will do well to educate on the link between Edo and IFE, Edo and YORUBA,Edo and Benin. I will share a few pointers here just for now. Anyone willing to engage me should speak up so we can take this to a thread dedicated just for the revelations. The earliest record of EDO history is with Ogisos. The Ogisos themselves were proxy rulers who drew authority from a foreign power on the throne of NOK civilization in ILE IFE. Ask EDO to share their beginning pre-Ogiso period. They have no record past Ogiso. The Ogiso period is dated. So what happened with EDO before that date? They were uncivilized forest dwellers who survived by gathering fruits and hunting small games. They were not city builders. They have never created a indigeneous State Ruler. Their uncivilization was washed off by influence from NOK in the age preceeding arrival of ODUDUWA in ILE IFE. When explorers of NOK discovered EDO they had nothing of garment whatsoever. Ask EDo to share its indigeneous garment if it had one. In fact the RED color garment was introduced to them by NOK, it came from IFE. There are many things to say but I want EDO to start answering these questions: Have you ever developed indigeneous STATE Rulers, and what was it called, what was the civilization called and what was its legacy? Have you ever developed indigeneous garment and weave styles? What is it called? What is your ethnic sacred color? Have you ever developed indigenous cults, what are their names? Have you ever indigeneously built cities and urban dwellings? Have you ever indigeneously developed art and influenced other ethnic groups with your arts? Name the ethnic your art influenced. Like I said, anyone is free to throw up a challenge. EDO is nothing, IFE civilized your beginnings, it continues to do so as we speak with its dynasty n Bini. 1 Like 1 Share |

Lotechi: Are they still being slaughtered now? Whats diffrrent? Christians used to torture and kill non believers who refused to ocnvert during the spanish inquisition. So speak for your own religion first. What has twin killing got to do with this post? Did Yorubas kill twins? Dont you know twins are worshipped in Yoruba religion as Orisa Ibeji? Yoruba have thw highest twin birth rates in the world. So dont talk nonsense just to gain attention. |

Moneywomen17:what you are saying is not actually correct, ogiso were the first kings of Benin people, but one out of our own obas invented the title Oba,and the Yorubas adopted it,take it or leave it. the Esanword for king is Ojie, while Benin refer to kings as duke using the word Enogie. but the word Oba is reserved for the emperor which is ruler of the eweka dynasty. it is only Yorubas that refer to any king as oba because they don't know the origin nor essence of the title. |
