There are 2 main methods to discover a vehicle accident history:
1. From the history report. This is usually recommended as the first step. Every vehicle has a 17 digit number known as the V I N or Chassis Number.
With this number, the detailed history from when the vehicle was manufactured, till when it was imported can be accessed from several databases and compiled in a report.
This applies primarily to Tokunbo vehicles, or vehicles that have not been in use in Nigeria for long.
2. From close and thorough physical inspection by a professional. This would apply to both Tokunbo and Nigerian used vehicles, someone with the relevant skills would be able to inspect the body and the rest of the vehicle and detect accident or prior damage signs or signs of a repair.
The reason the V I N report is recommended first is that there are some types of damage that may not leave signs on the car for an average inspector to detect, such as when a car is damaged by water or flood.
In such cases, the best way to get that information is from a comprehensive Vehicle History Report.
