MultiChoice Nigeria is once again expanding the content offering on its DStv platform with the introduction of three new channels from the stables of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) and a brand-new local entertainment channel starting 31st January 2019.

The 24-hour channels which are: NTA 2, NTA Parliament, NTA News 24 and POP Central TV will air on all DStv packages in Nigeria only.

NTA News 24 (DStv 419) is an English language general news channel, providing news on current affairs, business, social, economy, sports, entertainment, as well as in-depth discussions and analysis of topical issues from varying perspectives, insightful discussions with experts on current regional and international developments. NTA 2 (DStv 369) is a Free-to-Air general entertainment channel providing movies, music, events, talk shows and much more while NTA Parliament (DStv 370) will focus on providing live coverage of sittings of the Legislative Arms of Government, National Assembly (State and Federal), House of Representatives and the Senate, as well as discussions and analysis of political, economic, social technological and legal issues affecting Nigeria. POP Central TV (DStv 189) is a pop-culture entertainment platform dedicated to culture expressions through diverse content creators across different subcultures, vocations, interests and groups.

Speaking on the launch of the new channels, Managing Director, MultiChoice Nigeria, Mr. John Ugbe said: “With the launch of these channels, we have once again enhanced our local content offering and provided our customers with more options to choose from. The new NTA channels and POP Central TV channel will showcase authentic Nigerian content from news to general entertainment that will keep customers in and out of Nigeria abreast of the happenings within the country”, he said.

MultiChoice Nigeria has continued to expand the content offering on its DStv platform with even more sports, news, general entertainment and Free-to-Air channels, including Channels TV, Africa Independent Television (AIT), SilverBird Television (STV), Television Continental (TVC), Lagos Television (LTV) and AREWA24.

The new NTA News 24, NTA 2, NTA Parliamentary and POP Central TV channels will be available from 31 January 2019 to all DStv customers on Premium, Compact +, Compact, Family and Access packages.

Local content

The NBC code, which was first drafted in the 1990s, mandates that free to air stations should show 70% local content, while pay TV stations should show 20% local content.

Prior to this (in the 1980s) the NTA showed a lot of foreign shows. The NTA unilaterally increased their quota to 90% local content in the late 1990s.

I remember thinking that the directive didn't make any sense to me and that it could easily be flouted.

1) How do you determine what is local content and what is not?

2) Would an MBI production of the Ghanaian league be considered as local content or not?

3) Would a BBC production of the Nigerian league be considered as local content or not?

My questions were eventually put to the test 20 years later when Big Brother Naija was held in South Africa. It was classed as local content because some of the producers and production crew were Nigerians, yet the show was held in South Africa.


Anyway, Multichoice immediately started trying to get Nigerian content in 1994 in response to the NBC code. This put them in conflict with Nigerian stars.

Multichoice bought The Charly Boy Show, some of Onyeka Onwenu's videos and other content from NTA2 Channel 5. However, the content did not belong to the NTA and Charly Boy and Onyeka sued Multichoice.

AIT owner, Raymond Dokpesi later said that he sold the idea of creating a Nigerian movie channel to DSTV, but DSTV sidelined him and created Africa Magic.

Since then Multichoice/DSTV has been looking to increase their local content.

These stations have been on in Startimes from time immemorial. If only Starttimes can get the rights to EPL and Laliga, Dstv is finished!

NTA 2 Channel 5 has been announcing for the past one month that they'll soon be on DSTV.

NTA 2 was once on Multichoice's platform, but they were later replaced by NTA International.
