Atmospheric pressure rapidly changes in Europe over short distances. As weather and pressure patterns are dependent on fronts. Over mountainous regions, the changes are more steep both with time, height and horizontal.

The article you quoted stated that the pilot came down hard on the surface resulting in the crash. This occurs mostly when you overestimate the pressure setting on the altimeter.

The scenario you highlighted does not occur in Nigeria because our pressure systems are not as variable as in Europe. And besides, such landings that depend solely on altimeter readings usually occur in "white-out" situations during a blizzard or fog when the visibility is very bad. From the scene of the crash, the weather was good and the visibility was excellent so the pilot will be operating VFR and not depending on instruments.
