Opobo town is the first town to be surveyed in west Africa, the first port town in nigeria, u see houses especially upstairs that v lasted for over 300years.
The people are most educated and enlightened in the niger delta and one of the most educated groups in nigeria.
In most island communities, the government have not brought in the national grid due to the topography so the rather use heavy generators and turbines to power the towns, the whole community is electrified but yet to join the national grid.
Mostly the street lights are on every night and 3-4 days a week,the town enjoys steady power supply from the heavy gas turbin stations.
In bonny, it's same thing,bonny is not connected to the national grid but uses gas turbine and generators.
Opobo Town is the most ancient and developed beautiful island in nigeria.want to visit? Road trip is coming
The wisdom of this kingdom will amaze u. Fine people, inter married with Europeans,Family Compounds and names structured very well.(seen game of throne?)
Lots of communities in nigeria can't boast of having a 100yrs written history or having any form of school back to 100yrs ago but here is a kingdom that can boast of having the earliest form of educational institute of 300yrs ago or there about!!Opobo kingdom is the only kingdom in nigeria that has the statuis of a city state and could send envoys and ambassadors to the known world in the 17th, 18th centuries as can be seen on the mark-grave of one of their sons in the pictures below!
