Basically, water companies need to make a profit so that they can afford much more modern equipment AND afford maintenance costs that would mean no more polluted water or poor water supply.

That is why GSM is working in Nigeria because GSM companies are allowed to charge prices that allow them to make a profit.

Let's be realistic. It is painful, and God knows that high prices affect my pocket, as yours, but all the polluted water is what we get for paying low prices, plus corruption.

Thank you
we no want Dia water at all. We go manage ourselves.

Actually, just as with electricity, it’s not much more expensive if you factor in the extra cost of alternative (or privately-generated) sources.

When I lived at Yaba, I had tap water from the public mains. When I lived at Shomolu, the same. Even when I lived at Ajuwon, I had it for a bit. The government should extend this everywhere to stop people sinking boreholes and creating future environmental disasters.
All this happened when I was 5 And only in the urban settings But never in the rural areas.
Did u see this recently or in the 80s? because mine was in the 80s

Yaba, 2001-2008, Ajuwon 2008-2015, Shomolu 2015-2016. Taps still run in these places. The problem is that they're poorly maintained and no effort is made to extend them to newer settlements.

I also saw them living in Edo State (outside the capital) in the 80's but they're non-existent in those places now.

The solution is not always an increment of tariff
Just like the solution to Nigeria's poor education is not increasing Tuition.
We have to admit we are a 3rd world country, fresh out of slavery and declare a state of emergency on infrastructure.

And where will we get the money to build and maintain good infrastructure if not raised tarrifs and taxes.

Covenant has top notch facilities compared to your government universities because fees are sky high.

The oil we rely on needs to be at 140 dollars per barrel before we can have a balanced budget

My point is even the citizens don't think it's cause for concern, even if fuel is $500, a typical Buhari/Atiku won't let his child school in Nigeria and the ones that do chose private universities even though ALL of them benefited from Nigerian educational institutions.
Same with the health sector. EVERY politician goes abroad to treat themselves, until that changes NOTHING would change.
Using GSM as an example can only stand if it was a public/private partnership but it isn't.

The beautiful roads that China built was as a result of tolling the roads.

Whether Nigeria likes it or not, there's no alternative to paying the real price for most of the infrastructire existing and that which will be built

The economic reforms embarked upon by china helped to propel China into the ranks of the world's major economic powers not massive taxing of its poor citizens.
A country with a shrinking middle class can't survive more taxes.
You can't tax your way into prosperity, if you do wealthy individuals would attempt to leave the country or take wealth out to avoid paying taxes. Business101(Panama papers leak is an example)
Nigeria's problem is simple
WE DON'T KNOW WE HAVE A PROBLEM.
OUR LEADERS ARE NOT WOKE

most sensible comment I have seen today.
Actually, all we need is for the government to allow a few companies to come in and build battery factories and solar panel factories in Nigeria to drive down the prices. Walahi, PHCN go chop their light. NNPC go drink their fuel
Thanks very much for the compliment.
Government will never allow the common man to have life easy

He observed that no water utility can borrow money or be made fully responsible for financial or investment support to water operations.

The reason, he explained, is that such operations are delegated to other state agencies either by State Water Boards (SWBs) or state water ministries.
Aside from these issues state water board dont make money. Lending to them would be an issue. The state water utility have not improved in the lsst 50 years. Alot states still building boreholes instead of improving state water utility access.

My overall solution is mixed of taxes, praise hikes and borrowing to expand coverage. All new houses build should connect to water board. Buhari promised cash to anyone who has plan to increase water supply. They should take him up on thst offer.

Nigeria is listening and taking advice too readily from these world Agencies. This sort of naivety is part of the reasons for the rise of the miscellaneous banditry ravaging the North East, North West and soon the rest of the nation, which you will all then worsen by not identifying the right causes. Nigerians complain incessantly about Lord Lugard creating Nigeria out of disparate Tribal Nations and yet do not realise that these World Agencies are indirectly replicating the act under your noses. For instance by continually advising, cajoling and emotionally blackmailing Nigeria about the need for Nations around Lake Chad basin to pool-resources in order to combat the 4 horsemen of Climate change: namely, desertification, hunger, water and terrorism, Nigeria has been deceived into becoming all but a State in UN’s (World Organisations) new Federal Republic of the Sahel. The federal Republic of the Sahel is made up of 4 states, Chad, Nigeria, Niger and Cameroon. Nigeria as the plumiest State in the new republic is merely attracting the bandits from the other States.

Nigerians need to take Nationhood seriously. You need to scrutinise and work out the hidden implications of advice given you by the West, get to grips with recording Births and Deaths, keeping records, guarding your borders, investing in security as part of any major infrastructural and super-structural overhauls and so on.
You've said it all bro.. I wonder why these WORLD BANK BANDITS are taken seriously especially by countries they have Ravaged with their ponzi scheme-like analysis.. They always have something bad up their sleeves... They say we spend $700million dollars on alternative water providers, do they mean our good indiginous mai-ruwas and pure water companies or the crippled urban water supply systems the people no longer depend on. The next move now by them will be to come and equip our country with top-notch water distribution system that to the blind is cheaper but to the knowledgeable is waaaaayyyyy more expensive than what we previously had.
