If the national assembly and the executive is at loggerheads, the country would be at a standstill or at best move slowly. This had been the situation in the last 4 years.
It is very difficult for the president's party to be in majority at the national assembly and not have the president's input in choosing its leaders. Even in the US, the republican leadership of the Congress are always carrying out the wishes of Donald Trump. Since the Democrats has taken over the house, very few progress has been made as regards actual governance.

Or is all these lawyers in the upper chamber bereft of knowledge check and balance which is embedded on the independence of legislature. Theoretically,its true but in practice this cant happen in Nigeria.you can see how saraki and dogara that were not the choice of buhari slowed down development example the budgeting process and confirmation of certain appointments.therefore,the leaders of the nass should be in tandem with the president so that things would move faster.you can see the cordial relationship between mark and gej.by the way most state governors decide who is speaker in their states.

The path to learning is not always smooth. Sometimes it is necessary to fail in order to succeed. If people feel giving a sitting President absolute power without checks is progress then so be it. After this experience we will all sit back and decide in 2023 whether it was worth it.... whether we have indeed moved forward as a country. My delight is that in this scenario there can no longer be any excuses for failure.

We now have 8 solid years of the Buhari administration, the maximum permitted by law and hopefully part two will be as maxim leader without distraction, without excuses of past PDP misrule, without opposition and most of all without the need for politically correct compromises especially within his party. The second tenure is strictly about him and his legacy.

We were seeking for stability, now we have it. No excuses are left on the table.

Well it really depends on what each citizen defines as progress or development. Some see institutional building as the real progress while others watch out for the fruits, the direct benefits. In developed democracies the watch is always about the Constitution. They are always wary about the protecting the bigger picture be it immigration or gun laws in the US which are Constitutional matters.

In Nigeria most believe the Constitution is a hindrance and it doesn't permit the leader the total authority he needs to get things done. I think this is wrong. Nations are not built by individual leaders but by the collective wills of the people. The Legislature or Judiciary should not be viewed as an anchor to national development as this President has often portrayed, instead he should work with them even when they oppose his views because no one simply knows it all. I will dare to say it is maxim leaders who are bound to err and in history very few had been long term successes.

There are very few things Mr Buhari intended to do between 2015 and 2019 that he did not despitethe Legislature and judiciary. Electoral reforms were resisted, the EFCC chair continued unapproved in office, the 2 billion dollar defence fund was withdrawn without consent, no single individual indicted by the Legislature was prosecuted.... and on and on, so what more power or leverage does he want or does he need to do what he intends with Nigeria..... none.

My suspiscion is that he just wants to ride on the back of a Legislature to legitimise certain agendas he knows will be deeply unpopular and potentially dangerous to the Constitution for which under normal circumstances he could be 'walking the plank'. OBJ tried it and I am in no doubt another ex-general and military HOS will want a shot atthe past era of rule by decree.

This is the concern.
