So what if the school was never registered, what does it have to do with the collapsed building? What exactly is the requirement for registering if not to pay a large fee every year? The owner was very smart, he chose to save his money instead. What i'm perplexed about is how all those guys in this picture have flat tummy and 6 packs, is it hunger or is it from their daily activities? I go to the gym 5 days a week, do push up, lift dumbell, do squats, do dead lift, do crunches and I still have no 6 pack. Maybe its not in my genes. Do you know that in 1994, Rashidi Yekini became the first player to score in the worldcup where Nigeria defeated Bulgaria 3-0?

Presumably registration would require an inspection of the school’s physical facilities, and assuming the inspection reveals the school is situated in a suspect building then perhaps it would be denied registration which hopefully would cause it to relocate.

I stay in the same Street with the building (collapsed) the fault is with the government agency responsible for marking weak structures and demolition cos they didn't follow up after the building has been marked for more than two years

Sometimes when the Building Control Agency shows up to demolish/close down buildings or building sites, people in the neighborhood fight them.

How does that stop a building from collapsing??

Nigerians and misplaced priorities

While it may not stop the building itself from collapsing, it may stop the location of a school in the building.

Registration is not the key thing. Government needs to stop accepting bribe to approve schools. They collect money and look the other way. Don't be surprised the school is registered in Education ministry. It's a sad situation. We need an overhaul in this country. Money speaks

There's no way that school is government approved! If it is please quote me with evidence, I stand to be corrected.

Who know if they are being giving rebate every year.
Miki22:
We have thousands of unregistered private schools in Nigeria today.
They just get 3-5 teachers(SSCE holder) rent 3 rooms or other cheap alternatives and start having students.
The Ministry of Education in each state needs to do a lot work for our nation.

As if they request "building structure test" as part of their requirements. All these associations shift position once their members have problems

The Association for Formidable Educational Development (AFED) and National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS) – have denied associations with Ohen Private Nursery and Primary School, the school within the collapsed building on Massey Street, Lagos Island.

National President AFED, the umbrella group of private schools that serve the low-income members of the society, Mr. Emmanuel Orji, told The Nation that the group had no records of the school’s membership.

I don't get it. is it that the school was not registered or that a building collapsed and people including students died? why do we always lose focus when things happen in this country. whether the school was registered or not, would that have stopped the building from collapsing? this country sef.

Parents should make it a point of duty to demand registration certificates from schools they intend to send their wards to inorder to avoid issues that touch.

Rather than fight to make the building structurally sound, y’all are fighting for school permits.

Asides the school children involved, other tenants of the building are expendable then, is that what you’re saying?

rentAcock, why don't you allow Rashidi Yekini to rest in peace? Many Nigerian players have scored in the World Cup after him so what's all the fuss? Yes he deserved a good remembrance but not by repeating the same line about him in every thread you come across in Nairaland. It is by giving him a worthy memorial, e.g. naming a stadium after him or establishing a football academy in his name.

And that's the ultimate goal, if I have the money to erect structures in his name, I would.

Both are not mutually-exclusive...
But there is absolutely no reason to expose innocent school kids to that danger at all. Not one!

And while each and every life is invaluable...
The loss of a lesser number of innocent lives is ALWAYS BETTER than the loss of a greater number of innocent lives.

Why do some of you persist with this argument? If a registration requires an inspection of the school’s facilities, and upon such inspection it reveals the structural inadequacies of the building it would at the very least put all parties on notice. The school will not be situated in the building, and the landlord may be compelled to take corrective measures or risk losing the other tenants as well who would now be on notice.
