Twenty eight-year-old Pekun Adediran is a thief.

She can't help it. After several attempts to write a book that would get her a publishing deal, she decided to steal something original, something from the god of duality and Tricks.

She must defeat a couple of mythological creatures, get the book back to its rightful owner or else - she'd get on the bad side of the god of duality...

Eshu.

Prologue

I didn't plan for any of these to happen.

You might read this and haul names at me: thief, ole, evil-one, but you must know one thing, anyone in my shoes would've done the same thing.

I live on peanuts. Look, it's that bad. You finish with a third class then that's beginning of suffering for you. Even if at all you have a good grade, be rest assured you are likely to teach before you get that good job. For the undergraduates, keep your chin up, read, but don't say I didn't warn you.

I have always wanted to be a writer and since I studied creative arts in the University of Lagos; it was only normal for me to pursue my dreams. Only in my case, I ended teaching these bunch of spoiled rich kids. What's worse? I earned twenty thousand monthly, spend up to seven thousand on transport and the remaining money on basic needs. While I taught these kids in Christ Assigned Nursery and Primary school, I pursued my dreams in writing. I sent out the sample chapters of my complete manuscript, titled Portal of Faili.

You'd think I nailed the title - well, not so much. I got rejections left right and center. But everything changed for me last August, when Christ Assigned school took an excursion to Jericho to visit National Museum Of Unity, Ibadan.

To say it was a bad experience for me would be a lie. Well, it was good until at first; it landed me a publishing deal. Before, I used to think Nigerian publishing houses liked general fiction until my mythology book came through. But my opinion changed as soon as I signed the publishing deal.

It was a short drive since Christ Assigned was located around Aleshinloye. A few kids bullied Tinuke, a dolly eyed, scrawny kid in my class. I ignored. Not my problem.

I lead my class for the museum tour. Every class teacher did. And mine were horrible little monsters. I took them through the big corridors, with scary statues and glass cases full of clay pots. there was still one in particular that unnerved me - a statue of a Yoruba ruler which spun slowly. After I ended tour with the kids in my class, they followed the excursion officer, Mr Olunloyo while I took a tour of my own.

As much as the spinning traditional ruler gave me chills, the books encased in the transparent glasses next to it fascinated me. On the glasses DO NOT OPEN glared back at me. Did I tell you I loved stealing? It's quite uncontrollable. My mother tried so many times to beat the spirit out of me.

"Die demon thief. Emi ole leave my daugher, die!" No amount of prayer worked and now as I write this, I wished things turned out different for me.

The room was subtly lit, one could still make out the striking eyes of the dark traditional ruler. Musty smell of old fabric wafted through my nose. I suspected it came from the shiny agbada the statue wore.

Get what you came here for.

My feet sunk into the carpeted floor as I made my way to the books which were the first thing you'd find on entering the room. All the reasons not to do this come flooded my brain as if my body chemistry just sent them an envelop of invitation. A soft panic grew in my stomach, then travelled through my chest until it reached my throat.

Stop acting like a chicken.

Once I stopped right in front of the glass, I open its lead with shaky hands. There's a rumour that books in museums contained ancient stories. If only I knew the statue protected the books, maybe I would have steered clear. Any way, I retrieved one book, closed the lead and shoved the old, brown book into my handbag. Thankfully, this is a Nigerian museum, and alarms didn't go off.

That day something changed.

Once we left the museum for school, a huge storm brewed, the clouds got blacker than I'd ever seen. I assumed it would rain, but then as if someone tapped me, I turned around in the bus and there at the entrance of the museum, the traditional ruler froze on a spot. Its agbada was gone but still wore a sokoto. Lightening sparked in its eyes just like it did in the sky and its face morphed into cold, hard style.

But no one seemed to notice.

Fib and the axe of fury:

Stumbling upon a reaper is weird

Having visions of a massacre is scary

Playing a teenage detective with a magical gift is tiring

Secrets are revealed, friends are lost and trusts are broken...

Mrs. Adeosun has everything planned: hide the 'curse' running in Fibikemi's blood.

After casting a spell on Fibikemi's eyes, she forces her to wear a pair of magical eyeglass once outside the walls of their house with no questions asked. But one day, Fibikemi loses it at the train station and sees something that will change her life forever.
