MEMORY VERSE: “And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;” – Mark 16:17 (scroll down for RCCG Sunday School 10 March 2019 HYMN)

BIBLE PASSAGE: Acts 19:1-6 KJV (RCCG Sunday School STUDENT Manual 10 March 2019)

1 And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples,

2 He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.

3 And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John’s baptism.

4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.

5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.

LESSON INTRODUCTION

Our Lord Jesus Christ declared that the ability to speak with a new tongue shall be one of the signs that follow everyone who believes in Him (Mark 16:17). While every believer receives the Holy Spirit at the point of their conversion (Acts 2:38), believers are expected to continue to thirst and hunger for the infilling of the Holy Spirit (Luke 24:49). In this lesson we shall attempt to answer some of the mind boggling questions about speaking in an unknown tongue and its benefits.

OUTLINES

NEW TONGUES AND THEIR DISTINCTIONS
BENEFITS OF SPEAKING IN AN UNKNOWN TONGUE
1. NEW TONGUES AND THEIR DISTINCTIONS
The ability to speak with new tongues is divine (not learned, bought or copied) and manifest when one is baptised with the Holy Spirit. It is one of the outward (physical) evidences of the overflow of the Holy Spirit in the believer (Acts 2:4). The power to witness and to do exploits is another crucial evidence of baptism of the Holy Spirit. (Acts 1:8; 10:38).
The ability to speak in an unknown tongue and the gift of diverse kind of tongues are given by the Holy Spirit. However, we need to distinguish between the two. While every believer is expected to speak in an unknown tongue (Acts 19:1-6), not all may receive the gift of diverse kinds (1 Cor. 12:10). Note that both can take place simultaneously for some believers ( Acts 2:4,7-11). When a believer speaks in a unknown tongue, he speaks mysteries (unto God) which cannot be understood by men (1 Cor. 14:2); however God can speak through one with the gift of diverse kinds of tongues to men with interpretations where necessary (Acts 2:4-6). Speaking in an unknown tongue is for self-edification (1 Cor. 14:4) while diverse kinds of tongues (when interpreted) edify the church and those around (Acts 2:7-10).

2. BENEFITS OF SPEAKING IN AN UNKNOWN TONGUE
The following are some of the benefits of speaking in an unknown tongue:

It improves the believer’s prayer life: Supernatural ability to communicate with God effectively and intercede for others. Rom. 8:26; 1 Cor. 14:2
Self-edification: it stirs up believers faith. 1 Cor. 14:4; Jude 20
It is a means of yielding our tongue to God. No man can tame the tongue but God. By the Holy Spirit, the whole body can change including the tongue. James 3:8.
It is a weapon of spiritual warfare. 1 Cor. 14:2
It refreshes our spirit and soul. Isaiah 28:11-12
It assists believers to sing, praise and give thanks to God. 1 Cor. 14:15
It helps believers to access divine revelations and mysteries. 1 Cor. 2:9-11
CONCLUSION:
Speaking in an unknown tongue is a fulfillment of the promise of God. It is for all believers who would not just desire it but fully tap into the benefits irrespective of their church denominations, tribes or nations.

QUESTIONS:

Give reasons believers should speak in tongue.
Mention four benefits of speaking in an unknown tongue.
ASSIGNMENT: Set apart time to pray violently this week until you receive afresh the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

For Further Reading: 1 Cor. 14.3; Acts 26:18; 19:6; 4:31.

RCCG Sunday School 10 March 2019 HYMN
O Sunday School, on the Lord’s day,
O how I love Thee well,
I am happy, it makes me glad
To rejoice at Thy birth.
O Sunday School, on the Lord’s day, Thy friendship suits me well,
Both young and old will sing Thy song,
We long for Sunday School.
O Sunday School, on the Lord’s day,
Christ was Thy first teacher,
The Holy Spirit, great teacher,
Does manifest in thee.
O Sunday School, on the Lord’s day,
This testimony is sure,
That God, the Father Almighty,
Poured His blessing on Thee.
O Sunday School, on the Lord’s day,
Though the sun be so bright,
Or if the clouds black with rain,
I’ll be in Sunday School.
O Sunday School, on the Lord’s day,
I rejoice to see Thee,
Will thou pass over me today?
Without my being blest?

But sir, we can all speak in ‘unknown languages’. How can doing something that we can all do be a sign of anything?

RCCG got their doctrine wrong. According to them, speaking gibberish is speaking in tongues, something even toddlers and mad men do.

But they fail to understand that speaking in tongues is the same as speaking in known language which you never understood nor spoke before. The essence is for you to preach in areas where you do not understand their language. The Holy Spirit will envelope you and give you the power to speak their language. That's what happened on the day of Pentecost. The people who received the holy Spirit where gifted with the power to speak foreign languages. That's why when people who came from all Nations under the earrh gathered and heard them speaking in tongues, they could hear their native tongue being spoken by the Christians who were Israelites.

Read the book of Acts chapter 2. And don't let anyone fool you into thinking speaking in tongues is gibberish speaking. It is actually human language.

That you're justifying my view that the unchristlike attitude of christians is responsible for the spread of atheism in Nairaland and even beyond.

Feel free to also quote buda and Michellekabod's comments before they came to Christ.

You have hence exposed why not just atheism but also the satanists were also very comfortable here in the religion section prior to my arrival, in spite of their being many Christians as yourself here.

Father in heaven give us more of the kind of disciples that were in the old times church, we need them back in Nairaland and beyond, so that the gates of hell would not continue to prevail against the church, both here in Nairaland and beyond. Amen!

You can all "blab" but not "speak". There's a difference.
Being able to really speak meaningful statements in an unknown language is exlusively a gift the Holy Spirit gives.

Your blabbing could never produce any result, whereas I could get a person rid of cancer by my speaking.

Read the book of Acts chapter 2. And don't let anyone fool you into thinking speaking in tongues is gibberish speaking. It is actually human language.

So where did you get the silly opinion that it is speaking gibberish that RCCG tells people to do.

And you're with incomplete knowledge to think that speaking in tongues is only for evangelism. The two major purposes highlighted of it in the Bible are self edification and body of Christ edification.

And in the Acts 2 you're quoting wrongly, it wasn't the believers' tongue speaking that preached to the people around them. For fisrt, they weren't even sharing the Gospel, they were rather praising God. Second the people weren't hearing any preaching, rather they thought they were hearing drunks.

It was Apostle Peter's message in normal language that did the preaching, and it expalined to the people the fact that what they saw was a manifestation of the prophecy in Joel, where God said He would pour out His spirit on all flesh in the last days.

Now if you're ignorant submission were true that tongue speaking was only for the purpose of preaching, why then would it be that the people whom Peter preached to at Cornelius' house started speaking in tongues while they were being preached to. You think they were returning the preaching?

Learn today, that the primary purposes of speaking in tongues for a believer are for his personal edification and for the edification of the church.

Remember the scriptures that says "Build your self up in the most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost".

You'll be sounding authoritative in ignorance when you're not an atheist like Seun. Even Seun sef is being more..... these days.

1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
5 And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.
6 Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.
7 And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans?
8 And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?
9 Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia,
10 Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes,
11 Cretans and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.
12 And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another, What meaneth this?
13 Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine.
14 But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words:
15 For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day.
16 But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel;
17 And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:
18 And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:
19 And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke:

If I ask you to show me where speaking in tongues is a language no man on Earth understands, you won't be able to do that. All through the Bible, speaking in tongues has to do with another language. On the day of Pentecost as seen in the passage above, the Holy Spirit gave those Galileans utterances and the Bible says they spoke with other tongues. This means they spoke in another language, not gibberish. How do I know this?

Verse 5 says men from every nation under heaven were present there. The Bible even listed some of their nationalities and went on to show that every man heard the disciples speak in his own language. This shows that the speaking in tongues wasn't gibberish but a language under heaven known by men.

Now, if they were speaking the languages of the men from different Nations around, what do you think they were saying actually? Don't you know that God used that wonderful sign as a means for those men of other nationalities to hear the gospel? But to you, they weren't preaching but screaming jargons. Verse 11 even shows that the foreigners acknowledged that the things the disciples were saying in their languages were about the wonderful works of God. Isn't that preaching to you?

Yes, some thought they were drunk. This is normal because every wonderful work of God often gets people who doubt it. But did you noticed that those who thought the disciples were drunk came later after others had believed? Peter had to clarify them that what they are experiencing is what Prophet Joel prophesied about that God will pour out his spirit on all flesh and they will prophesy. Prophesy is another word for preach, and that is what those people speaking in tongues did.

As for Cornelius and his household, it's still wasn't gibberish they spoke but other tongues. They spoke other tongues which probably must have been Jewish because that was how the Jewish believers who came with Peter were able to know that the gentiles had received the holy ghost. If speaking in tongues was gibberish, then any nonentity can speak jargons and claim to be filled with the holy ghost. How do you spot the difference? It is by having someone from nowhere who understands the earthly language interpret what the person is saying. But the jargons you people speak today doesn't ever get interpreted nor do we know the language spoken. This means it's all fake or demonic incantations.

Acts 10:44-46 King James Version (KJV)
While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.
And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.
For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter,

Your post could have been much shorter.

Now read through my post once again and tell me where I said the early Christian's were talking gibberish.

Instead of reading comprehensively you're making unfounded claims.

Again I restate to you the other things I addressed in your original post:

1. You're making a silly assumption by saying it's gibberish the RCCG tells it's members to speak.

2. You're making an ignorant statement by saying the sole purpose of tongue-speaking is evangelism.

Speaking in tongues in churches today are scam.
Why?
Because nobody to interprete according to what the bible teaches.
They are just speaking without knowing what they speak

So because you attend 10 or less out of hundreds of thousands of parishes mean you can generalize?

I've attended at least 6 RCCG parishes across 5 different states, and nobody tells anyone to speak gibberish.

And for the purposes of tongue-speaking you mentioned, I stated them in my initial post to be edifying the speaker and edifying the church.

First, I didn't say anything about difference in doctrine. What I said was that the fact that you heard people talking "gibberish" doesn't mean it's the church that tells them to. And if you've been at some parishes where you actually saw or heard the church leaders instructing the folks to speak in false tongues, I said it's Still wrong for you to generalize that for the entire church, as I have been at parishes where nothing remotely close ever happens. So you're TOTALLY WRONG in thinking or implying that it's a church doctrine to instruct members to speak in false tongues.

Now, you're still acting in ignorance by thinking because the tongues a person speaks in sounds strange to you, you are qualified to classify them as gibberish.

What do you think places you in any position to judge people's tongues?

1 Corinthians 14:2
For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.

Just as the thought of those people thinking the believers we're drunk didn't invalidate their speaking, so does your own funny assessment not.

The verse you quoted, had it been you read the entire chapter, you would have seen that Paul spoke of interpreting the tongues spoken or else it is meaningless to those listening and even to the person speaking it if he can't interpret. Read the entire chapter

I think it's you who should rather read the full chapter in its true context.

Apostle Paul wasn't talking about someone speaking to edify himself. Rather, he was talking about someone who spoke to edify the church. He said if you spoke without interpreting then, no one in the church gets edified. And thus he recommended that to manifest the spiritual gifts for the church's edification, you should either prophesy in a known tongue, or interprete (in known language) whatever you speak in an unknown tongue.

He didn't by that rule out the place of a believer praying in an unknown tongue to edify his own self.

awesomeJ:

You can all "blab" but not "speak". There's a difference.
Being able to really speak meaningful statements in an unknown language is exlusively a gift the Holy Spirit gives.

Your blabbing could never produce any result, whereas I could get a person rid of cancer by my speaking.

How many cancer patient have you cured by speaking in tongue?
