Hello. I've been an ardent fan of Yoruba literature but I rarely see people talking about it here (even though we have Yorubas on this forum). I feel Yoruba literature kind of connects one to his or her roots and have better storylines than many nollywood movies (both English and Yoruba). I can't forget books like 'Koseegbe', 'Ogbon ologbon', 'Ojo buruku esu gbomi mu' and my favourite- 'Agbako nile tete'. If I could lay my hands on any of these books, i don't mind reading them again. Please, does anyone in the house read Yoruba books? If yes, what's ur favourite?

Yes brother, i do a lot. My favourite is ogboju ode ninu igbo irumole. I'm very much in need of that book agbako nile tete and ojo buruku esu gbomimu. That molè of a guy is damn dangerous.

lol...i was quite scared when i read 'agbako nile tete'. D suspense was just der!

@OP I read efunshetan aniwura or is it iyalode? I cant remember, was a long time ago but i liked it very much even though i was young and slow in reading(yoruba no easy to read o lol).
I would love to lay my hands on any of the old classics like ogboju ode ninu igbo irunmole...there was a time it was being read on radio lagos(i think) but i couldnt keep up with the program.
For those looking for these books, i dont think there are soft copies yet...you can get some hard copies at second-hand stores around lagos sha.

Yes, I have an idea of what it means.

Literature is literature regardless of the subject matter, what matters is the quality & delivery.

I havent read any other Yoruba literature, but I will love to.

Just to let you know that Prof Chinua Achebe's 'Things Fall Apart' has been translated into Yoruba as 'Igbesi Aye Okonkwo', by the late Chief Wale Ogunyemi. You can find the web link here: http://zodml.org/eachbook.php?id=2667


An acount of a Nigerian's World War 2 experiences written in Yoruba is called 'Oju mi ri ni India', ie 'My experiences in India'. The Nigerian Regiment of the Royal West African Frontier Force(RWAFF), were stationed in India, in preparation to kick the Japanese out of Burma. They used to teach this in the 1960s in Western Nigeria's schools I believe, but not any more, don't think.
