Recently, Tanitoluwa Adewumi, the Nigerian chess wonder kid was given a home, alongside his parents and brother. A week ago, the boy was homeless, studying chess moves while lying on the floor of a shelter in Manhattan. Now Tani, as he is known, has a home, a six-figure bank account, scholarship offers from three elite private schools and an invitation to meet President Bill Clinton. “I think I am still dreaming,” said Tani’s dad, Kayode Adewumi. “I hope I don’t wake up.” Tani is a Nigerian refugee who had learned chess only a bit more than a year earlier, he had just defeated kids from elite private schools to win the New York state chess championship for his age group. He lugged a trophy nearly as big as he is back to the homeless shelter. A Newyork based journalist through his column instigated a GoFundMe drive that raised more than $200,000 for Tani, his parents and his brother. A half-dozen readers offered housing — in a couple of cases, palatial quarters. Immigration lawyers offered pro bono assistance to the Adewumis, who are in the country legally and seeking asylum. Three film companies are vying to make movies about Tani. The family settled on one of the more modest and practical housing offers: An anonymous donor paid a year’s rent on a two-bedroom apartment near Tani’s current school. The apartment is clean, comfortable and freshly painted, without being luxurious. According to the reporter, Adewumis have decided that they will not spend a cent of the $200,000 GoFundMe money on themselves. They will take out a 10 percent tithe and donate it to their church, which helped them while they were homeless, and the rest will be channelled through a new Tanitoluwa Adewumi Foundation to help African immigrants who are struggling in the United States the way they were a week ago. When the journalist asked the Adewumi Snr, how they could turn down every penny of such a huge sum. Didn’t they want a celebration dinner? New iPhones? A vacation? “I’m a hardworking guy,” Mr Adewumi explained. He has two jobs: He drives for Uber with a rented car and sells real estate through Brick & Mortar. Someone has now offered him a free car so that he can keep more of the money he makes driving, and Tani’s mom was just offered a job as a health care aide at a hospital. Meet our amazing WCW! Precious is her name. She is indeed a rare gem, as precious as gold. I was captivated by her smile when I first saw her walk into our training centre last year. She had a striking semblance with the character Phiona Mutesi in the popular Disney movie; Queen of Katwe. With a very calm demeanor, I watched Precious grow as a chess player over the past few months. Now she has grown to be one of our best female chess players. Just last week Saturday, during our Chevron chess league match, I watched her face off fearlessly against Mr Lolomari George who happens to be the Head of Treasury Shell EP Companies in Nigeria. She had no idea of who she was up against, but she played anyway, giving it her best fight. I'm incredibly proud of how far Precious has come and there's definitely no limit to where her dreams will take her. The day I saw her selling fish on the streets during school hours, my heart sunk deeply in oceans. Then I realized that she's from Cameroon and was brought to Nigeria to live with her aunt who sells fish for a living. Precious has been out of school for two years now because they barely make enough to feed themselves, let alone afford school fees payment. Though deeply saddened for being out of school, she chooses to smile cheerfully while helping her aunt to sell fish. Chess has been a great escape for her in tremendous ways. She is highly intelligent and always ecstatic whenever I offer her books to read. She would carefully jot down words she doesn't understand and I help her with the definitions and usage in sentences. As a result of this, she has developed great passion for scriptwriting and hopes to become a scriptwriter someday. I worry because Precious is just 14 years old but already has all features of a young lady. It is only a matter of time before men start trying to take advantage of her. For most girls in Majidun community, teenage pregnancy is prevalent because that seems to be the only option available for them. This is one narrative we have come to change. We will not stand for this! Precious deserves quality education, she deserves a chance to live out her dreams. There are 13.4 million children who are school dropouts in Nigeria and Precious is one of them. This is a great tragedy. Nobody made a greater mistake than he who did nothing because he could do only a little. Let us all rise for the sake of Precious. Every child is worth it. They are worth love, they are worth the sacrifice. What is more important? What is bigger? What is better than giving someone hope of a greater tomorrow? Education is the most powerful weapon with which we can use to change the world- Nelson Mandela Save a girl child today and know that you are empowering a mother to many nations. Send us a DM if you would like to offer financial support to help enrol Precious in a private school. Let us also share this to the ends of the world. #IMAGINE IF YOU COULDN'T READ THIS #QUALITY EDUCATION FOR PRECIOUS
