Must we politicize everything? If you stay in upscale areas of Lagos and Abuja, you will know that truly Nigerians are importing pizzas from abroad. Why are we acting here like we don't know our people? The average Nigerian wants to 'prove', he wants to show off class. When Shoprite first opened it's franchises in Nigeria, the rich saw it as a perfect rendezvous, but when the hoi poloi also invaded the place, the rich stepped up and now go abroad for their own shopping. When jumia, konga, etc first came on stream, they were patronised by mostly the rich, now they prefer sites like amazon, Alibaba, etc where items are priced in dollars and pounds. All the latest model cars and phones, are being lapped up by Nigerians, first class air ticket seats to UK and Canada, same thing. Look, forget Nigerians are vain people naturallly. |

FULL SPEECH : Ogbeh made this known during a budget defence session at the National Assembly on Tuesday. Lamenting that Nigeria imports almost everything, the minister said, “Let nobody take it lightly, these guys have seized this country’s economy, taken us hostage and they have no intentions of giving up. Because this is a huge and very sweet market and they have taken control. “Every time you bring in a shipload of rice, you also bring in a shipload of unemployment, because you are transferring your wealth to sustain other economies. Somehow, Nigerians didn’t notice it, so we became a nation of importers. “Toothpick costs us $18 million; tomato paste costs us $400 million to import. Meanwhile, a basket in town is less than N2000; the farmers are losing money because the processors don’t have enough funds to set up factories.” He also said, “We import milk, sugar, toothpick, toothpaste, pencil, items we don’t make; Vegetable, lettuce, cabbage come from South America through Dubai and arrives here for sale. “There are also Nigerians who would rather have the imported item if it is not imported, it is not right, it shows status, class, that they only eat imported things. Ogbeh added that “There are Nigerians who use their cellphones to import pizza from London. That’s where we are, and it’s a very annoying situation.” . why will we not import. 1. is the Govt. providing adequate power at a reasonable price to power up factories to make these items. 2. has government provided accessible roads and good railway/dry port (at reasonable price to income) to enable seller move their goods without damage to place of buyers. 3.has govt provided the enabling environment in form of tax holidays or harmonized tax regime or even subsides for critical goods especially agriculture. 4. has govt provided easily accessible financing for business at affordable rates to enable business make profit over long term. 5. does govt take the welfare of her work force as an important factor knowing that their income is what encourages consumer spending. 6. has government looked into their bogus allowances and see how these unnecessary luxuries increases affect overhead cost and budget and reduces money meant for infrastructure. 7. has government not looted the treasury including importing grass from Brazil , over inflating military equipment and siphoning money overseas rather than keeping it within our economy. 8. is govt making accountable money given to her including security votes, unaccountable money to senators. 9. does she publish her spending and make available the information to the public for accountability. when u put all these together, u will see why we are in such a comatose state. |

Continue to run your mouths and support a useless bandit who cannot visit his country again because he is a criminal. Continue to lust for foreign products and abandon yours, then cry later that there are no jobs and the economy is hard. |

I believe the pizza thing is taken out of context, I mean how can a minister of Agriculture be boasting that Nigerians now import pizza? I need to read the full text of the message before judging. |

vioment:It just weakens me when I see educated Nigerians continually mocking the idea of importing a unique kind of grass to boost livestock production. Just the same way Nigeria imported a unique flood resistant rice seedling some years ago which happens to now be the bedrock of the current rice revolution. I imagine this is all just a combo of both ignorance and a desperation to politicise everything. |

But seriously not everything needs a rebuttal. Pls who doesn't believe Nigerians can do this? I can see this happening very very well. There was a time stupidly rich Nigerians would take a flight to London first then fly to Abuja cos they didn't want to fly local flights. |

Lush100:You polluted your beautiful writeup by you criticism of grass importation. Why dont you go read about what it was all about instead of just joining the crowd to criticise what you dont know about?.. What is wrong with importing a special breed of grass seedlings for the purpose of planting it in ranches in Nigeria?... You will probably ask if Nigeria doesnt already have grass, but are you aware the rice we plant today all over Nigeria are an imported tough breed which are resistant to a lot of things? |
| Re: Reno Omokri Reacts To Nigerians Importing Pizza From London With Their Phones by GuntersChain(m): 10:09am On Mar 28, 2019 |
the minister was only trying to buttress on the fact that nigerians depend heavily on importation, which inturn has an adverse effect on our economy. The government should impose heavy tax on imported goods or an outright ban, so as to encourage local production. |

If Reno's hands aren't clean cos he is staying abroad, its funny that he is now d standard by which u use to judge whether an APC minister is right or wrong. If u are asking if Nigeria is too bad 4 habitation, then u should ask if our Nigerian hospitals are too bad 4d president of Nigeria despite he said he will stop medical tourism |

Yes but he still made sense, because this same minister with all the lovely highlights you made wanted to import grasses from Brazil. What do you have to say about that.
